This trade mission was part of Basic Industries Clean Energy Trade Initiative - designed to support President Clintons International Clean Energy Initiative. Chinas energy needs are tremendous. Rapid industrialization combined with the increase of privately owned vehicles are dramatically affecting the countrys environment. As a result, the central and provincial governments are challenged with continuing Chinas development while improving the environment. The mission was designed to promote U.S. clean energy technologies, goods and services that can meet Chinas needs to central, provincial, and municipal government energy authorities; energy agencies and utilities; recently privatized institutions; and Chinese industrial sector members. Most participating companies were old-to-market, and wanted to make government contacts and generate new business opportunities. Description of U.S. Companies Participating in the Mission

Extractions: Several decades ago, the United States began to see its competitive edge being eroded by overseas initiatives in the manufacturing sector. The U.S. Government, along with existing associations and organizations sought to boost U.S. capacities and capabilities to compete in the burgeoning world market. These efforts resulted in a resurgence of the U.S. economy and re-establishment of the U.S. as a global leader in industry. Many smaller companies take advantage of association membership to learn about new proceedures, products and resources. In addition, many of these organizations offer substantial savings on supplies and equipment by pooling buying power. Trade Associations and Organizations Asian American Manufacturers Association: The AAMA promotes the growth and success of U.S. technology manufacturing and related enterprises throughout the Pacific Rim. Best Manufacturing Practices Center of Excellence: Begun in 1985 to help businesses by identifying, researching and promoting exceptional manufacturing practices, methods and proceedures in design, test, production, facilities, logistics and management, the BMPCE's main goal is to increase the quality, reliability and maintainability of goods produced by American firms with a commitment to strengthening the U.S. industrial base. Consortium for Advanced Manufacturing - International: CAM-I is an international consortium of companies, consultancies and academics who have elected to work cooperatively in a pre-competitive environment to solve problems that are common to the group.

Extractions: Make A Donation "United We Stand" Asian Pacific American Heritage Month The month of May is set aside as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, just as February is Black History Month, and September is Hispanic Heritage Month. One of the purposes of this celebration is to remind mainstream America of the contributions of these minority groups to this country. This year's APA Heritage Month celebration began with a Forum in Washington, "Celebrating Asian Pacific American heritage Month: Partnership for the Future," cosponsored by the Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies (APAICS) and the White House Initiative on Asian and Pacific Islanders (WHIAAPI) on May 3rd. Asian contributions to this country are a well-known fact, from Nobel Price winners in the sciences (quantitative, medical, etc.) to health care and construction, to supplying of fresh fruits and vegetables, and so on. The Filipinos can paralyze health care on the East Coast if they decide to go on strike and do damage to the system. This is also the reason why their nurses and healthcare professionals are in such high demand in hospitals, senior citizens home, among other. The Chinese can slow down research in the National Laboratories and National Institutes of Health, especially in the areas of complex mathematical equation. The Koreans are the largest suppliers of fresh produce to the country's largest supermarkets and well as open public markets.

Extractions: The Bush Administration is progressing toward a bilateral free-trade initiative with Seoul. The move appears to have been initiated last year when the Senate Finance Committee asked the U.S. International Trade Commission, an arm of the Commerce Department, to study the feasibility of an FTA with the U.S.'s fifth most important overseas trading partner. ITC economists began visiting Seoul in May to meet with counterparts in Corea's Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy. The economies of the two nations were complimentary, the ITC concluded. An FTA would boost Corean exports to the U.S. by 21% while boosting U.S. exports to Corea by 54%. The positive spin on the prospects for a bilateral FTA represents a turnaround in U.S. sentiment. As recently as December 7 U.S. Ambassador Thomas Hubbard had denied that a bilateral free trade pact was in the works. The Corean government too is ambivalent about an FTA. It would boost Corea's large manufacturers but would traumatize farmers, retailers, financial services companies and the entertainment sector, among others. Nevertheless, the ultimate long-term economic efficiencies that would result from an FTA will likely push Seoul to the negotiating table. From the U.S. standpoint, an FTA would cut the risk of losing ground in the region as East Asian economies move slowly but surely toward integration.

Extractions: Finding Minority Business Enterprises (MBE) Doing business with minority owned businesses b enefits African, Hispanic (Latino), or Asian Americans in two ways: obviously the owners are Ethnic minorities, and typically many of the employees are as well. Finding minority owned businesses can be challenging. One excellent source are government agencies who have programs intended to increase participation of minority owned businesses in public contracting or procurement. These programs are typically referred to as Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) programs. States that receive funding from the federal government (U.S. Department of Transportation) for highway projects must also maintain a database of certified Disadvantaged Business Enterprises (DBE), which are similar in definition to MBEs. Although DBE directories typically are weighted toward firms in the construction trades, they are still an excellent source of finding minority owned businesses who provide consumer and commercial products and services. This is because other government agencies, transit agencies, trade associations, and even private sector corporations use the state DBE program for reciprocal certification to ensure that their business is going to minority owned businesses.
