Since its founding in 1980, NAATA has been bringing award-winning programs by and about Asian Pacific Americans to the public through such venues as national and local television broadcasting, film and video screenings, and educational distribution services. NAATA works primarily in three programming areas: television broadcast, exhibition (namely, the annual San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival), and non-broadcast distribution, (more specifically, through their CrossCurrent Media catalogue). Through this effort, the organization seeks to support and nurture Asian Pacific American media artists in order to proffer a more accurate representation of Asian Pacific communities to the public. The representation of Asian Americans in American television and film, supporters of the group feel, has led to many false perceptions of them. In the 1995 Catalogue of the San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival, Stephen Gong (film history scholar and manager of the Pacific Film Archive) argues that the struggles in the career of silent film star, Sessue Hayakawa remain emblematic of the price Asian/American actors pay in order to get some screen time. Referring to the stereotypes of Asian Americans, he asks: "Do the commercial constraints that have apparently governed mass media from its earliest days still make it a given that public expectations must be fulfilled before artistic vision can be exercised?" NAATA attempts to respond to this question by presentingand more importantly, integratingalternative and self-proclaimed representation by "marginal" peoples into the mainstream media culture.

Extractions: Paper Outline The Typical Asian American Male The Typical Asian American Female Gender, race and class stereotypes of Asian Americans in the media, especially those depicted in popular movies, give the impression of what Asian Americans are really like to other Americans as well as to Asian Americans themselves. From the exaggerated depictions of exotic, sex-hungry Asian women to the gangster-involved, sexually abusive characteristics of Asian men, movie producers perpetuate the gender, race and class inequalities of Asian Americans by allowing these demonizing Asian characteristics to appear over and over in their box office movies. Examples of such characters appear in popular Asian-American movies such as The Year of the Dragon (1985), The Joy Luck Club (1993), Lethal Weapon 4 (1998), and Return to Paradise (1998). Because Asian Americans only make 3% of the American population (according the 1990 US Census) and live mostly on the west and east coasts of mainland United States and Hawaii, the rest of the American population will most likely get their exposures to Asian Americans through television and movies. Popular media exposure to Asian Americans lacks "in the flesh" acquaintance with Asian Americans; it hinders the process that could help Americans from other racial backgrounds realize that the stereotypical characters in Hollywood movie productions are unjust and biased. Furthermore, these popular movies do not reflect the true individuality of the typical Asian American living in America.

Extractions: Home Up Asian American Media in the Last Decade A Lecture by Mr. Daryl Chin October 11, 2002 Previous Lecture Synopses List Next Lecture [Photo by Ana Lai] Daryl Chin's lecture attracted many students despite the poor weather Originally, the main focus of the lecture would be on Asian-American Media in the Last Decade, but after careful reconsideration, it was pushed back to 1987, the year the Asian American International Film Festival celebrated its 10 th anniversary. Deemed the Asian American version of Brats, it was a year when many young generation filmmakers and video artists straight out of film school came into public prominence, a succession of both media literate and media conscious individuals. How do movies shape society? Roddy Bogowas black and white "A Small Room In The Big House" filmed with a Super 8 camera, deals with this issue of media consciousness by following the life of a little boy, who has been raised in a projection room of a movie theater where his father works. With his life intimately tied to movies, the little boys reactions toward being filmed, such as sticking the microphone in his mouth to mute all sound, is indicative of his self consciousness of the media saturated society around him. The stark black and white images are evocative of a time when personal films reigned supreme in the works of the film-makers. They brought the audience back to a period of pure innocence and joy in the appreciation of the film medium. In 1987, the number of films being screened at the Asian American International Film Festival was few in numbers, not because Asian Americans werent making any films, but because they werent part of the traditional Asian American film schools.
