Other Programs Program Descriptions: All of the programs, services and initiatives developed and delivered by The Disability Network (TDN) are designed to include the provision of at least one, if not more, of the 4 core services of this CIL. The following major programs, with a brief description, are provided by TDN: 1. Community Technology Center this state-of-the-art center provides an opportunity for people with and without disabilities to a) learn computer skills that are tailored to their desires and learning capabilities, b) try out high-tech assistive technology including laser guided controls and devices that operate the computer through bio-feedback and brain-waves, c) access tutorial software to increase their skills, and d) figure out what works for them prior to purchasing. The center also features on-line, real-time interpreter services, video conferencing and on-line classes. President Clinton visited the center at TDN for its official opening in September of 2000. New tools, visions and products must be created to make quality assistive on-line education a reality. However, not everything need be new many tools already exist. Web Authoring Tool Accessibility Guidelines Hearing and Sight Challenged Students Alliance for Technology Access The disabilities of hearing and sight impairment have long been recognized and traditional education has long accepted eye glasses and hearing aids as quite normal in the classroom (Gray et al., 1998) However, designers of on-line systems frequently fail to consider these impediments to learning when designing on-line systems. It is a very simple fix to duplicate on-line text in user adjustable sound files and offer text pages for the visually impaired. Even if the designer overlooks these simple remedies, current versions of the Microsoft Windows

Electronic Resources Acceptable Use Policy. In 1995, the Waterford School District began a strategic planning process that outlined a series of strategies and plans to bring the district into the twenty-first century. A technology strategy was developed that stated, Students and teachers will utilize technology throughout the curriculum to promote critical thinking, access information and improve communication. As a result of this strategy, the Board of Education approved nine Action Plans. The plans focused on acquiring technology, building an infrastructure necessary to support a Wide Area Network (WAN), developing student and teacher skills, purchasing software, providing access to the internet and improving communication through the use of technology. All of these goals have been either fully or partially accomplished. Here at Waterford High School, technology is an integral part of the curriculum. Within the structure of our block schedule, teachers have the time to design lessons that use a variety of activities and projects. Through the development of learner-based environments, students use technology to explore and discover unlimited sources of knowledge, develop new skills, and refine and transfer existing skills. The use of technology in the classroom provides tools that allow students to analyze, synthesize, and communicate their learning to others.
