The Scientist - Biotech Firms Acknowledge Minority Underrepresentation Minorities in general are really diversity not just for its own sake, explains bio'sFeldbaum. It's the same for astronauts, it's the same for astrophysicists http://www.the-scientist.com/yr1997/feb/finn_p1_970217.html
Extractions: TOO FEW: BIO president Carl Feldbaum cites the pipeline issue rather than discrimination as the main reason for small minority representation. Scientists who are members of racial and ethnic minorities are underrepresented in the biotechnology industry, according to a variety of industry observers. Minority researchers agree with company representatives and career counselors that this disparity rarely if ever arises from conscious or overt discrimination, but they disagree on what, if anything, individual biotech companies should do about it. While those in the industry say the problem is quite real, it is difficult to quantify. Large and small biotechnology companies approached by The Scientist declined to provide breakdowns on the racial and ethnic makeup of their scientific staffs. And the Washington, D.C.-based Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO), the industry's main lobbying group, does not collect data on this issue, although BIO president Carl B. Feldbaum says he plans to do so in the future.

Extractions: Cheryl Rodenhi This unit was developed at San Diego State University in EDTEC 596 , Interdisciplinary Teaching with Technology, Bernie Dodge , Instructor. Traveling through space and exploring the unknown has been an unquenched curiosity of mankind's since the beginning of time. Students of all ages, in schools throughout the world, are becoming more involved in researching space, following the current progress of space exploration, and discovering the learning possibilities that come from traveling through the last frontier. "Space Exploration" is an interdisciplinary unit combining multiple disciplines to create a single outcome. Good luck on your journey... This unit focuses on seventh and eighth grade science and involves language arts and social studies to a slightly lesser extent. The basis is rooted in the content area of science, but all the other disciplines are utilized to supplement the learning in the area of science and space exploration. While the unit is designed for the middle school level, it could be easily modified to work in lower grade levels or expanded to work at the high school level. As a result of this unit, students will learn many concepts that already exist within the disciplines. Embedded within the state frameworks and national standards is the goal of incorporating outcomes into content-rich applications. We believe our unit provides this type of setting.

I graduated a year early from high school and went out of state to a small liberal arts college (283 students in the school), but I missed my family too much so I came back to Houston and went to college (Tomball and now UHCL). I thought I wanted to major in computers and completed a few years of programming courses. I took accounting as a required core course - I found my niche, and my major changed. A short time later, my family moved to Brazil due to a promotion. Ive visited them several times, but I know that Texas is my home. Im a full-time student at University of Houston Clear Lake, which is about 5 minutes away from JSC. The University offers degrees in Sciences, Humanities, Psychology, Business, and many concentrations in those schools. Many co-ops have the chance to work full time and take a class or two in their spare time, which helps bring graduation sooner. Extractions: Q: Where can I find biographies on the Internet and in books? A : Hello, There are many biography resources, including Web sites, books and encyclopedias. Some biography resources focus on all kinds of famous people, and others focus on people related to a certain subject or group of people (e.g., astronauts, presidents, African-Americans). You can choose which resources to use depending on the person you are studying. To find biography sites on the Internet, I used sites that were suggested by other KidsConnect volunteers. When you are looking for the biography of a specific person, you can use a search engine such as Alta Vista (altavista.digital.com) and type: +biography +"[person's name]" example: +biography +"Maya Angelou" GENERAL BIOGRAPHY SITES 1. POTENTIAL OF THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION Alexander Yakovenko Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation Vienna, Austria INTRODUCTION The signing of the Intergovernmental Agreement on the creation of the International Space Station (ISS) took place on 29 of January, 1998 in Washington. The participants of the Agreement -USA, Russia, states-members of the European Space Agency (ESA), Japan and Canada decided to combine their efforts on the creation of the worlds first international space station. The first element of ISS - the Functional cargo block "Zarya" was launched from the "Baykonur" cosmodrome on 20 of November 1998. The second unit was launched by the USA on 4 December from cape Canaveral and was successfully docked with "Zarya". These events marked the beginning of practical realization of an unprecedented not only in technical but also in political sense project of the end of XX - the beginning of XXI-century. ISS will represent an unique orbital design with parameters: length - 108 meters, width - 74 meters, mass - more than 400 tons, ensuring permanent stay and work in space on orbit of 400 km high and 51,6 grad. inclination of an international crew of 6-7 members. Period of functioning on orbit - approximately 15 years. Station construction is planned to be finished by 2004. To reach this target it will be necessary to perform another 43 launches.

History. . . The foundation began in 1986 when Henri Landwirth, a successful hotelier, was asked to provide accommodations for a dying child who wanted to meet Mickey Mouse. Unfortunately the child died before the wish-granting foundation could secure the many travel and other arrangements, arrangements which took up to two months to make. As a result of this tragedy, Henri called on the support and involvement of his friends and business associates and started Give Kids The World. Now children can be brought to our Village within 24 hours when necessary. It Begins With A Wish. . .
