The department offers programs of study leading to general, major, honors, and joint honors degrees at the Bachelor of Science level as well as graduate programs for Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. The academic faculty presently consists of 24 professors, 4 professors emeriti, 4 senior scholars and numerous adjunct professors. They pursue original research in experimental and theoretical sub-atomic and molecular physics, solid state physics, mathematical physics, accelerator physics and medical physics in collaboration with research and professional associates as well as graduate students. All are assisted in their endeavours by the office, shop and technical support staff. Major research facilities of the department include an accelerator laboratory, two electron microscopes, a high-resolution mass spectrometer, four time-of-flight mass spectrometers for large molecules, a helium liquefier, a dilution refrigerator for millikelvin temperatures, the 40 cm Evans' reflecting telescope, and extensive computer facilities. Members of the department also participate in research at other facilities as part of national and international collaborations.

The bachelor of science degree in physics with the astronomy option is provided for those with corresponding interests in astronomy. The interdisciplinary bachelor of science degree in the area of engineering physics is offered through the College of Engineering and Technology. The courses required for the bachelor of arts degree in physics offer a broader program in science and the liberal arts suitable for a variety of preprofessional curricula and for interdisciplinary studies in areas including biophysics, chemical physics, and geophysics. Students in this degree program should select elective courses in consultation with their advisers. Astronomical Terms Identification of Stars Stars are indentified in many ways. One way, devised by Johann Bayer, uses Greek letters and the Latin root of the name of the constellation. The first of the Greek letters are usually given to the brightest stars, but in some constellations, they are not. Nebulae, clusters, and galaxies also need to be called something. One method is the Messier system, devised by Messier. This list has an interesting history. Messier was a comet hunter, and during his searches, he found many objects that he thought lookes like comets, but weren't. He created this list as a reference for other comet hunters so that if they found that object, they would know it wasn't a comet, and was already discovered. He gave each object a number, and each is now referred to as that number with a capital "M" in front of it (see table below).
