This is the single most important thing you should get out of this FAQ: DO NOT BUY YOUR TELESCOPE FROM A DEPARTMENT STORE. Ignore everything any literature tells you about magnification and such. Buy from a telescope store, where you will get a telescope that makes smaller claims, but will give you FAR better performance. The reason is that as far as telescopes go, how much you can magnify is a function of the amount of light the telescope receives, which is almost entirely determined by the telescope's aperture (the size of the lens or mirror that points at the sky). As far as magnification goes, you can expect 50x per inch of aperture on a normal night.

Extractions: Some useful astronomical links Historically, any newly discovered object needed to be "confirmed" by detecting it in the optical band. Catalogs were published with stamp-sized images obtained at the largest available telescope or from sky survey plates (eg., Parkes catalog identification papers in several issues of the Australian Journal of Physics Astrophysics Supplements (eg., Bolton et al. 1977); Einstein sources Maccacaro et al 1994; QSO identification Schneider et al 1992). This probably is still true, although not as general, as we try to "see" what we just found. We are probably reaching an information overload with more efficient instruments, larger detectors and an increasing number of facilities. At the same time the technology has been catching up and allowed us to be able to reach most of these data regardless of where it resides. These notes are just a roadmap to guide the reader through this maze, highlighting some of the more important starting points or stops. Probably the most difficult part of a project is staring at a blank page and needing to fill it up, or getting some brief description and trying to complete the information. The following section will have pointers to information or data useful to elaborate or check new ideas.

Extractions: HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE All amateur proposals to use the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) must describe a self-contained and well defined scientific program, and must include a discussion of the methods for obtaining and analyzing data in order to achieve the scientific goals of the project. The principal investigator (PI) will be expected to understand the goal(s) of his or her proposal and to publish the results in the scientific literature. This program is open to all United States citizens and legal residents who do not have an advanced degree in astronomy. The original news release from NASA and STScI points out that "a few hours of observing time" has been reserved for amateur astronomers by the director of STScI. Dr. Riccardo Giacconi, the original director, further stated that he expected amateurs "to ask refreshingly new questions." Amateur proposals duplicating proposals already submitted by professional astronomers will not be considered unless the amateur has contributed a unique and creative aspect to the observation. It should be emphasized that duplication of observation will be the exception rather than the rule. Information from your proposal will be entered in a database at STScI to estimate the resources required by the program (e.g. spacecraft time, data volume, real-time requirements) and to test for duplication with both Guaranteed Time Observers (GTOs) and General Observers (GOs). In order to give more amateurs time on the HST, total observing time will be of prime importance. However, an original, creative proposal may justify much of the allotted time if it offers a real contribution to the advancement of astronomy.
