It's called speed golf and it combines running with golf.That's right. No more staid, multi-hour outings here. The whole point of speed golf is to get around the course as quickly as possible while still shooting a respectable score. Players run the course carrying one club. There are signs, though, that the East Coast is catching on to the allure of speed golf. Last September, the sport made its East Coast debut in Connecticut with the University of Hartford Xtreme Golf Open at the Tunxis Plantation Country Club in Farmington. Speed golf is the brainchild of Jay Larson, a former teaching golf pro and triathlete, and Steve Scott, a world-class runner who is the American record holder in the mile. Larson, whose enthusiasm is matched by his Connecticut counterpart, former University of Hartford athlete Ron Soloway, was intrigued by the idea that "golfers suffer from thinking too much. Playing golf on the run helps you maximize your efforts until you manage to overcome your own internal demons."
