Extractions: Activities, interaction, entertainment - these are both the means and the ends of communities. Whether you live to work or work to live, you do so in the confines of one ore more physical communities. With the Internet revolution now about five years old, it is the rule - rather than the exception - that Internet connectivity is likely to be available to your fellow and sister community members. And so the time is ripe to use Internet technologies to extend our physical communities into cyberspace. Communities on the Internet can supplement how we interact with members of our physical communities. But they can also extend those communities to include members who otherwise would not participate. In addition, entirely new communities can develop on the Internet, communities whose members may not ever meet face to face. For example, there are foreign nationals in the United States who have benefited from Internet communities dedicated to keeping cultures and languages alive. The law student community is one that stands to benefit greatly from Internet communities. Imagine a forum where you could hang out at a virtual lunch table and discuss the latest Supreme Court case - not just with your classmates from law school - but with law students from all over the country and the world. Imagine an online bulletin board where you could post your course outlines, writing projects, and resumes. And imagine having it all in one place in an easy-to-use format.

The bill was amended on the House floor. The establishment of this fund has been a Bar priority for several years. There are 500,000+ Mississippians who qualify for free legal aid and only around 35 federally funded legal services attorneys. Although SB 2543 contains no funding mechanism, it can accept both private and public monies to help fund legal services for the poor in Mississippi. SB 2543 will now be sent to the Governor.

Materials like this provide convincing data that online learning supports both sound scholarship and substantive interactivity. This excellent research is well worth a serious read, including the biographies of the five authors. They call themselves "The Survivors". Presented by the Survivors: Louise Bailey Mahla Strohmaier Online communities in an educational setting exist, evolve, and are enhanced with communication protocols. Katherine Mieszkowski (2000) defines community as a "market space" that allows people with shared needs to swap ideas, trade experiences, and learn from one another. In the development of such online communities, communication between prospective members of the community is essential creating avenues of communicating and defining topics that meet the interest and shared needs of an online communitys residents. One purpose of this essay is to highlight the positive role of communication protocols in an online educational setting, which include establishment of synchronous and asynchronous communication exchanges on technological, pedagogical, field specific and personal levels.

Extractions: Return to article index Breaking down the home purchase By Robert Wahlers The total cost of purchasing a home can be looked at as a number of parts equaling a whole. While the majority of the hundreds of thousands of dollars that a buyer invests in the long term goes toward the "sticks and bricks" production of a new home, there are other costs factored into the equation, including the value of the land and upgrades to a basic model. Homebuyers also need to budget for all of the related services involved with the closing. In terms of estimating what a buyer would pay, percentage-wise, for the cost of the home and the land it's on, David Schoner, vice-president of Coldwell Banker New Homes Division, says a very broad breakdown would be about one-third for the cost of the lot itself and about two thirds for the home. "That's a very general rule of thumb. You can't pin it down more than that, because it varies so much from location to location," says Schoner. "You'll pay much more for land in Bergen County, for example, because it's so scarce, as compared to Burlington County."

Spanish articles / Artículos en Español Blind Injustice: Violations of Victims' Rights Printer-friendly version Email to a friend MADDvocate, Winter 1998 In a state with both a statutory Victims' Bill of Rights and a State Constitutional Amendment for victims' rights, a widow had to go to extraordinary means to attend the trial of her husband's killer. By chance, an advocate met the woman and suggested that she hire a private attorney to motion the to court on her behalf to attend the trial. Originally, the defense attorney argued that the mere presence of the widow at the trial would cause her Victim Imp act Statement to be inflammatory and prejudicial to his client. When the private attorney filed his motion, the defense argued that he had no standing in criminal court since he represented neither the defendant nor the state. At this point, the prosecutor joined the private attorney in the motion. The judge then agreed to look at the state's victims' rights law, and when he did, agreed that she had the right to attend the trial and give a Victim Impact Statement. The family of a young father killed by a drunk driver closely followed the case because they knew the judge was a close personal friend of the defense attorney. After the trial and sentencing, without notifying the family or the prosecutor, the judge reduced the sentence to 30 days of shock probation. The offender avoided paying restitution or doing anything for the victim family or the community.
