Extractions: Off-Highway Vehicle Recreation Area The El Mirage Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) Area is located in the Mojave Desert on the western edge of San Bernardino County near the Los Angeles County Line. This off-highway vehicle riding area attracts a variety of activities. The areas of interest include the El Mirage Dry Lakebed, the Shadow Mountains, the El Mirage Basin, and the Twin Hills area that make up the 24,000 acre project area of public and private land. Elevations range from about 2,800 feet at the El Mirage Dry Lake to more than 3,800 feet in the Shadow Mountains. During summer months, temperatures can reach a high of 120 degrees F. Summer thunderstorms can come in with spectacular force, although most of the minimal precipitation falls in the winter months. Winter lows can fall to 5 degrees F. at night, with highs in the 60 to 70 degree F. range during the day. Spring and fall temperatures range between the extremes of winter and summer. Access: The riding area is located west of Adelanto, California, between US highway 395 and the Los Angeles County line. Most visitors enter the area from US highway 395 near Adelanto by taking Chamberlaine Way (formerly Crippen Avenue) west to Kiowa Road. Turn right on Kiowa Road and follow the signs toward the town of El Mirage. At El Mirage Road, turn left Just east of the town of El Mirage, take Mountain View Road north to enter the El Mirage OHV Recreation Area. A sign located at this intersection will direct you to the recreation area.

These include off-highway motorcycles (OHMs) and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs). Due to limited product availability, the revised regulations allow ATVs and OHMs that do not meet the new emission standards to be ridden during certain periods of the year - mainly fall, winter and spring months - when ozone levels are low. Ozone is one of the most health-damaging components of smog. Sales and seasonal use of non-conforming OHRVs The revised regulations allow the sale of non-complying, two-stroke OHRVs. However, people purchasing non-complying vehicles will receive a red sticker from the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) which must be affixed to the vehicle. The red sticker identifies the vehicle as non-complying and limits its recreational use in off-highway riding areas to designated months when the ARB has determined that ozone levels are low. The months when riding non-complying vehicles is allowed varies from location to location. Persons who ride red-sticker vehicles during months that are not designated for riding for those vehicles are subject to citations and fines. The chart on the back of this page shows the riding areas and the seasons when use of non-complying vehicles is permitted.
