We show you the big picture so you can make the most of your investment. Australias economic recovery has been buoyed by a raft of new economic data showing rising business confidence and strong consumer spending. Experts say rising business confidence in the first quarter of 2002 will drive annual economic growth above 4%. This would make Australia one of the fastest growing economies in the western world . Looking back at 2001, there were plenty of positive signs for the year ahead: Wages were growing at a moderate 3.3% a year, well within the Reserve Banks target range The housing market continued to recover strongly, with both building activity and prices rising sharply in 2001 Household spending rebounded strongly in 2001. Retail turnover was up 9% over the year to November. Real spending is estimated to be up 5.6% over the same period.

Extractions: As Project ORACLE 2030 considers the range of plausible futures for Australia, Australian Defence, and the RAAF, one of the key themes will be economics. The RAAF Project ORACLE 2030 Team and Toffler Associates will focus throughout the study on important issues related to the future of the global economy, the economy of the Asia-Pacific region, and the Australian economy. In over sixty interviews with executives, thought leaders, and other experts in Australia and from around the globe, the changing economy was cited as critical. Alvin and Heidi Toffler have stressed in their work the important linkages between economics and security. In their view, how we make war is fundamentally related to how we make wealth. Click here for a discussion of this linkage, excerpted from their book entitled War and Anti-War: Survival at the Dawn of the 21st Century, (Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1994). Regional and Global Economies are Becoming More Connected The current Asian economic crisis has dominated the news and the thinking of government officials, business leaders, and everyday citizens for the past year. The cascading effects of the crisis vividly point up the fact that ever increasing and deepening linkages among financial markets and industries around the world are dramatically accelerating the pace of change. Asia has experienced substantial negative and painful effects from this inter-connectedness; in the future, the effects can be similar, or they can be much more positive. The constant appears to be that the accelerated pace of change will make for a turbulent economic environment.

Allen Consulting found that the proportion of revenue from internet business had outstripped forecasts made in late December, before the effects of the dotcom crash had been fully realised. The research also found a correlation between broadband connectivity and revenue per employee. Broadband usage also corresponded to percentage of business done online. However Ms Bun cautioned the causal relationship between broadband and other variables was not clear. ADVERTISEMENT

Extractions: www.east.com.au Demand in Australia's "New Economy" Banking Markets Overview Corporates report an average of over 17 different banking products being used from their banks and, at an average of just over 4 bank relationships, are spreading their business about to secure optimum pricing and performance. Just as the corporates continue to be increasingly active relationship managers themselves, new supply side entrants, in particular the US based investment and treasury banks are scouring the marketplace looking to build off their international account bases with the Australian arms of these international customers and leverage from this into relationships with the newer Australian telcos. Over banked? Certainly not when it comes to innovative banking and financing solutions, as is being well demonstrated by the growth in corporate debt securitisation for example. Over serviced ? Definitely not yet when banker performance is looked at through the eyes of the corporate customer and customer satisfaction ratings remain only slightly better than average for the most part. Relationship driven ? Increasingly so, as banks move away from their historical product focus to one more concerned with the health of their complete interaction with the corporate customer, no more so than with corporate customers active in the new economy communications industry.
