Extractions: RETURN TO SPIN DOCTOR RETURN TO SPIN HOMEPAGE (From SUPRA eXpress Vol.1, 1997) Island Encounters Given the hijinx of the last few months in the Pacific, especially in Papua New Guinea, it seems appropriate that at this time, the Macleay Museum is presenting ³Island Encounters² in 1997. To understand the current events in the Pacific Islands, it is important to understand how the Pacific has been interpreted in the past, and more importantly, how this view of the Pacific has influenced our understanding of the region in the present. For the last two centuries, the Pacific has fascinated Europe, Asia and the Americas. Firstly as the final terestrial frontier of exploration; then as a vast territory of ocean to use as the bargaining chips in the colonial race, world wars and eventually cold war, as well as the nursery of twentieth century social theory and philosophising, in particular the disciplines of Anthropology and Sociology. In that period of time the Pacific Islander has been portrayed as the ³savage², the ³noble savage², the ³friendly islanders², the ³lazy pacific islanders², and the ³economic basket cases of the world² to name just a few. Yet while understanding the Pacific has been a primary goal of western society, it is interesting that the reaction to the current turmoil in PNG is that of shock and incredulity. Why is it that our interpretation of the Pacific is so different to the realities on the ground? In many ways the Macleay Museum¹s ³Island Encounters² exhibit is a graphic representation of how Australia¹s interaction with the Pacific is in many ways analogous to the occidental/oriental interaction discussed by Edward Said. To be more specific, the Pacific has been a counterpoint to Europe, in defining Australian culture for the last two centuries. From the time of federation and even earlier, Australia¹s interaction in the international sphere has been complex.

The Australian English Language and Culture Program (AELCP) is aimed at Study Abroad or exchange students who are not able to enrol in the Advanced Diploma in Australian Language and Culture. This program enables international students from language backgrounds other than English to develop their English language skills through the study of aspects of contemporary Australian society and culture. Through both class activities and excursions, it introduces students to a range of intercultural issues and provides them with opportunities to interact with native speakers in order to develop the cultural understanding, skills, knowledge and confidence required to use English and participate actively in a variety of settings. The program focuses particularly on oral skills and includes some participation in mainstream University classes. Students complete a major project using ethnographic research techniques. The program is designed for students whose language level is below IELTS 5.0 or TOEFL 510 (computer 180).

Students audit classes in their area of study as an integral part of the ADALC. The Advanced Diploma is aimed at two types of students: International students who complete the ADALC meet the UTS language entry requirements and, provided they meet academic entry requirements into faculties, are eligible to study at UTS. Students must have reached an English language competence level of 5.0 (IELTS) or TOEFL 510 (computer 180). Students with an IELTS of 6.0 or TOEFL of 550 are exempt from Semester 1.
