Literature Australian literature is seen internationally as one of the most vital branches of contemporary writing in English. Australian writing has moved from the rural worker and outback themes of the last century through to social comment and analysis of urban and multicultural life with new dimensions being added by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander authors and by writers with migrant backgrounds. Australian authors have been nominated for the prestigious Booker Prize on several occasions with Peter Carey, Miles Franklin, and Thomas Keneally each awarded it in the 1980's. Patrick White won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1973. Helen Garner, David Malouf, Elizabeth Jolley, Mudrooroo Narogin and Tim Winton are among the many other Australian prize winning novelists. More recently, the works of writers from migrant backgrounds - such as Brian Castro, Beth Yahp and Timoshenko Aslanides - have reflected their ethnic origins and experiences. Australian fiction and non-fiction works increasingly reflect a growing awareness of Asia-Pacific cultures and of the mutuality of the interests shared by the countries of the region. Some recent examples include the work of Nick Jose, Alex Miller and Bernard Smith. Australia also has strong traditions in children's literature. Some of the most prominent are Ivan Southall, Patricia Wrightson, Colin Thiele and David Martin.

Extractions: About CALLS The Centre for Australian Language and Literature Studies (CALLS) was established in 1989 to promote the research and teaching of Australian Language and Literature, and to encourage Australian writing. In 1998, it was expanded to encompass all the disciplines that come under the heading of Australian Studies, and its name changed to CALLS: The Centre for Australian Studies, UNE. The Centre is located in the Faculty of Arts at the University of New England. The focus of the Centre's activities is regional, national and international. Two regional conferences and a symposium have been held so far - at Kendall High School (1989) to celebrate the work of Henry Kendall, and at Gulgong (1991) to concentrate attention on the writings of Louisa and Henry Lawson. Important publications have resulted from these two conferences. A symposium, The Heritage Maze, was held in 1999, and another is planned for later this year. These symposia reflect the expanded CALLS, and the range of disciplines involved in Australian Studies.

Extractions: CygNET home About the UWA Library About our collections Australian literature This page Responsibility: Principal Librarian, Scholars' Centre The Australian Literature Collection has three main components: editions of literary works by Australians published before 1980, selected Australian literary manuscripts, and archival material relating to the Playhouse Theatre. More detail about this collection is available in the Special Collections CygNET pages. The collection contains literary works in all genres, and includes autobiography, essays and critical writings as well as poetry, drama and fiction. It covers works by authors who are considered to have a significant association with Australia. Biographical works and critical writings about particular authors or Australian literature in general are not included in the collection. The printed texts in the collection are limited to material written, and in most cases published, before 1980. However, delayed publications, significant new editions, collected works, compilations or anthologies which were not published until after 1980 but consist of material written wholly or in significant part before that date are included in the collection. Also included in the Australian Literature Collection is a range of material associated with the former Playhouse Theatre in Perth. This covers the period from the 1950s to 1982, and includes copies of plays (published and unpublished), typescripts, prompt copies, programmes, playbills and posters. This is an archival collection which will not be developed further. This material is housed in the

Sprott, a former George Munro Professor of English Language and Literature at Dalhousie University and a native Australian. Dr. Sprott presented the library with his collection in 1984. Description Language English. Holdings 4,380 monographs; 30 serials; 5 audiotapes; 5 spoken word records. The collection does not currently receive any serials although the library itself receives 7 Australian literature journals. Bibliographic Access The collection is fully catalogued. LC subject headings and classification are used. The holdings are recorded in the Nova Scotia Union Catalogue, and through the Libraries on-line catalogue Novanet. S.E. Sprott's bibliography (see below) describes the collection. Physical Access One quarter of the collection is in the Special Collections Department and three quarters is in the main library collection. The collection is open to the public.
