Ila98oct.html is little contrast in overall suicide ratios between australian states and territories, and what to the size of the rural sector with particular regions. http://www.ssaa.org.au/ila98oct.html
Extractions: Suicide and the Lack of Political Will Paul Peake One of the major charges brought against private firearms ownership by the anti-gun lobby in Australia centres on the role of firearms in suicides, the argument being that if all privately owned guns are removed from the community there will be a corresponding fall in the incidence of suicide. The facts suggest, however, that firearm controls have little impact on overall suicide rates, and the lack of political will in addressing the real issues might be killing hundreds of Australians every year. Table 1 shows that the overall suicide ratio in Australia has altered very little in more than a century. It is reasonable to assume that as the community has become more urbanised and regulatory measures have become more stringent, the degree of private firearms ownership over the same period has declined, yet the suicide rate has nevertheless remained relatively stable. Table 1. Source: Australian Bureau of Statistics data. While the overall percentage of suicides has remained even for more than 100 years, Table 2 shows that suicide by firearm has actually been decreasing for some time. However, alternative methods such as gassing and hanging have been steadily increasing. Table 2. Source: Australian Bureau of Statistics data.

The first Australian involvement with dragon boat racing occurred in 1980 when the Penang Tourist Development Corporation invited the WA Surf Life Saving Association to send a team to the Penang Festival. This was followed the next year by invitations from the HKTA to WA and NSW to send teams to what was then considered the unofficial world championships on Hong Kong Harbour. In 1984 Sydney held the inaugural Sydney Dragon Boat Festival at Farm Cove. The Western Australia Dragon Boat Association formed in 1984. All other mainland states and territories have subsequently formed State Associations to administer dragon boat racing in their region

The Audit is funded under the Federal Government's Natural Heritage Trust and will provide an independent, objective assessment of the extent of degradation arising from approximately twenty key types of land and water problems, including an economic analysis of each problem. The seven projects are: Decision support for catchment committees (West Gippsland, Victoria) Development of farming systems and improving catchment health (Fitzroy Catchment, Queensland) Supporting and managing land use impacts and change (Mount Lofty Ranges, South Australia) Rangelands trend and condition assessment for the Tropical Savannas (Northern Territory, Queensland and Western Australia) ... Sustainable use of water resources (Tasmania) ; and Native vegetation mapping to support vegetation management in the low-rainfall cropping areas (Walgett Shire, New South Wales) Mr Anderson said State and Territory commitment to the Audit is well demonstrated by the quality of projects put forward. "All of the projects address key issues as States and Territories work with rural communities to develop Regional Australia," he said.

Extractions: With no native vines in Australia the vines were imported mainly from Europe. Vines have flourished in five of Australia's eight states and territories for over 200 hundred years. Australia boasts some of the oldest vines in the world. It is not uncommon to find Shiraz vines, called Syrah in some parts of the world, over 100 years old. Many are on original rootstock because Australian vines were not crippled by the phylloxera bug like those in California or Europe. And Australia didn't experience Prohibition, either. Historically, grapes were planted near the areas where people lived, often within city limits. When more Europeans settled in Australia at the beginning of the 19th century, they scouted out areas that resembled the rolling hills and gravelly soils of their homelands. As Australia's wine culture grew, more scientific methods were used to determine which combinations of soils and climates would be best suited to grapes. New appellations-or geographic indications as the Australian's call them-are still being developed.

Merely by taking gainful advantage of the lessons learned, knowledge gained and changes realised over the past 100 years, we are ever better equipped to design a new system of government that would better reflect current and future needs and aspirations of Australians, and would be an improvement on the present system in all significant respects. A number of us are beavering away at this task right now! A best-possible system must be excellent on the basis of fundamental principles of democracy, justice, equity, efficiency, affordability and so on, but must also be understandable and plainly desirable to enough Australians to succeed in the referendum(s) that count. Obviously, all else being equal, the better a proposed new model is, the more people will vote for it!

This land and ice mass is also the fifth largest continent in the world. However this area varies from season to season. In the summer months, the continent is fourteen million square kilometres in area with a diameter of 4500 kilometres. In winter, the freezing of the surrounding seas effectively doubles the size of the continent to more than thirty million square kilometres. This would make it three times the size of the United States of America. The actual rocky landmass of Antarctica, is only seven million square kilometres in area, with the coastline extending 7500 kilometres. There are a few rocky free zones along this coastline and these regions are called oases. The Australian Antarctic Territory (AAT) was established in 1933 and was the largest single claim (42%) made by any country to sovereignty of Antarctica.
