Extractions: Andrew Telegdi in Hungary for Habitat or Hungaroring? Our local Member of Parliament, Andrew Telegdi , was in HUNGARY on certain race day a few years ago. The local paper said he was there to work on Habitat for Humanity . We want to know if he was there to cement ties with the Hungarian tobacco industry as well. It would seems that our government just loves Formula-1 and Indy racing to promote trade, commerce and the Canadian way, especially the Villeneuve way. The Molson empire is one of the jewels in the tobacco crown. If you want to know who controls sports and the media in Canada, it ain't us. Molson controls entertainment, sports, stadia, and Hockey Night in Canada, maybe. The 20% stake that Philip Morris , the world's largest publicly traded tobacco company has in the Canadian brewery and entertainment giant is a fact that escapes most people. It especially escapes Canadians who want to be entertained. For a look at the performance of the tobacco conglomerates of the world just click here . Then send for their annual reports from your stock broker. Imasco - Imperial Tobacco's parent company owns Shopper's Drug Mart , and Canada Trust Imperial Tobacco affiliated companies spend millions on many youth oriented, fun loving events in Canada. They also spend a few hundred thousand dollars on cancer support groups in Canada. I guess that their losing fight to sell cigarettes at their drug stores must have kept the kids away from the candy counter? Instead, they invade bus shelters near schools, churches and city halls, fill countryside billboards, sports pages of newspapers, and magazines just in time for the kids to see them, on their way to school.
Extractions: Dec. 18, 2002, 12:10PM Associated Press When Sterling Marlin got out of his car near the end of the Daytona 500 to pull a bent fender back into place, it was the first of a series of bizarre finishes in auto racing this year. Marlin damaged his Dodge while blocking Jeff Gordon late in the race. As that was happening, a crash well behind the leaders prompted NASCAR to pull out a red flag and stop the race so it could finish under green. Marlin scrambled from his car, walked around to inspect the right front, and began to reach for the bent metal. A NASCAR official shooed him back into the car, but it was too late.

Extractions: February 14, 2003 DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Two races down and two to go for Junior. Dale Earnhardt Jr., who came into Speed Weeks as the favorite for Sunday's Daytona 500, raced to an overpowering victory Thursday in a 125-mile qualifier. That followed an impressive win Saturday night in the nonpoints Bud Shootout. Now all that's left are Saturday's Koolerz 300 Busch Series race and, of course, the Daytona 500, NASCAR's biggest event. "I want to win the Busch race and the Cup race," Earnhardt said. "I want to compete in anything I'm competing in. I'm a terrible loser. I was disappointed not to win the pole, especially losing to Jeff Green who wasn't somebody you expected to win." Green nipped Earnhardt for the top qualifying position in the 500 with a lap that was 0.058-second faster. That relegated Earnhardt to the outside of Sunday's front row.

If you are racing at the local speedway on "amateur day", any car will do, but the professional racers depend on a fast car for their living. A good racing car can cost as much several million dollars, and as much again to maintain each year. When racing, you also need to wear a helmet and a flame-resistant suit.
