As a banker in the US and EU credit card servces I was *really* just stupified at how *very* bad this book is.

This book having just been published as you will note, I was expecting some very insightful writing/commnetary along with the research (which was all based on mid-to-late 1990's - so nothing new.)I have written White Papers and Blue Papers that had more content and insight.

This book is just rambling garbage - nothing more.Want a copy?I'll send you mine for free and *I* will pay the shipping within the US. ... Read more

Product Description
Port describes both the nature and process of protecting appellations of source in Japan and provides normative commentary on this protection. By focusing on the Japanese judiciary's interpretation of two statutes he Trademark Law and the Unfair Competition Prevention Act some important lessons are learned. First, the Japanese judiciary treats trademark owners (both foreign and domestic) paternalistically. Japanese courts go to great extremes to avoid harsh results that seem possible under a strict reading of these two statutes. Second, Japanese trademark owners are extremely rights conscious and pursue litigation to the fullest in order to drive up the cost of market access by competitors. Third, the Japanese trademark right operates more like a true property right than it does in America. This has broad ramifications as judges treat the right with far more deference than their American counterparts. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
A Functional Competition Policy for India comes at a time when the country is poised to implement a new Competition Law, whilst there is a lack of understanding of the nature, and extent of prevalence, of different types of anti-competitive practices. The study helps in getting a better understanding of the competition and economic regulation scenario in India. Contrary to popular perception, the study does not treat Competition Policy as just adoption and implementation of a competition law, but looks at it as a broader policy framework where competition is encouraged as a market process to generate competitive outcomes. Accordingly, the report comprises 22 chapters, giving comprehensive treatment to competition policy in India, covering both systemic as well as sectoral issues. The study tracks the evolution of Competition Policy and Law in India; discusses the interface of Competition Policy with Government Policies (at the Federal as well as State level), and Consumer Welfare; and identifies competition and economic regulation issues in agriculture, manufacturing, and services. The present volume is the result of the effort put in by top experts in the country. The study will be useful to all those who are interested in economic policies, in general, and competition policy, in particular. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent & Unique
This is a unique collection on an interesting subject. As in any edited volume, some chapters are better than others. I was surprised by the low paternity assurance of some studies, and the insights into human evolution and anatomy are fascinating. For example, why are human penises so much larger than in other apes? And why are human females menstrual rather than estrual? I wish the copy I read was mine and not in a library. ... Read more

Product Description
This volume addresses several concerns: What labor, workplace, and technology issues should composition as a profession be concerned with in the 21st century? How does technology affect the shape of academic labor? How have working conditions in composition affected the ways technology is used? The authors in this collection have turned their attention to these questions, arguing that composition workers (researchers, scholars, administrators, and teachers) have much to think about in relation to articulation of their professional identity. ... Product Description
This book is designed to fill a gap in law school pedagogy: the skills needed for succeeding in law school competitions. Law schools perpetually struggle with the need to fit an ever-expanding universe of both doctrinal studies and skills development into a finite curriculum. Training in competition skills inevitably gets squeezed and edited down, and sometimes even left on the cutting room floor. Yet students can benefit enormously from these competitions, as they provide a way for students to practice and develop skills that will benefit themselves and their clients once they enter the workforce.

Part I of this manual is designed to guide the user in applying the analytical, writing, and research skills students learned (or are learning) in the first-year courses to the task of preparing an appellate brief. The manual does presuppose some background in legal analysis and persuasive argument. Part I also instructs students on developing and presenting an oral argument based on their briefs. Part II focuses on non-brief writing competitions, specifically the Client Counseling, Negotiation, and Mediation Competitions.

Each section of the book takes a direct and pragmatic approach that is easily adapted to a broad spectrum of instruction: individual, self-teaching, coach-student training, and classroom teaching. ... Read more

Product Description
Sperm Competition and Sexual Selection presents the intricate ways in which sperm compete to fertilize eggs and how this has prompted reinterpretations of breeding behavior. This book provides a theoretical framework for the study of sperm competition, which is a central part of sexual selection. It also discusses the roles of females and the relationships between paternal care in sperm competition. The chapters focusing on taxonomic development are diverse and cover all the major animal groups, both vertebrate and invertebrate, and plants. The final chapter provides an overview discussing the relationship between sperm competition and sexual selection in terms of both function and mechanism and how these translate into species fitness. This book will be of prime interest to behaviorists, ecologists and evolutionary biologists, suggesting new avenues of research and new ways of approaching old problems.

Product Description
Comparative port history is often preached, but seldom practiced. This volume compares the development of Rotterdam and Antwerp in the period 1880-2000. Because of their geographical proximity, these European ports have a long history of intense rivalry. In order to attract new cargo flows, port dues and cargo-handling costs were regarded as vital instruments, but the volume qualifies the importance of pricing as a competitive instrument, and questions the common typologies of Rotterdam and Antwerp. Using new methods and theories, and employing an extensive, recently constructed database, the book presents a fresh look at an old topic. This volume contains contributions of both Belgian and Dutch authors. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly elementary analysis
I read parts of this book while doing a research project on East Asian regional economic institutions and found its contents to be surprisingly elementary. The depiction of Japan's role in Asia was rather simplistic and didn't seem to probe the issue as much as one would hope from a book on this topic. It also seemed to really closely adhere to the "standard" analysis of Japan without really problematizing the country and its role in the way that many contemporary texts do these days.

Bottom line: This is a book to read if you know little about the topic and want a really standard, "party line" type of analysis.Otherwise, don't waste your time. ... Read more

Product Description
Moot Court competitions constitute an alternative model of human rights training, giving students the skills to contribute to the development of international human rights law and thus make them qualified advocates for human rights change in their home countries and abroad. By focusing on the perfection of oral as well as written skills, participants are more likely to be successful not only in cases brought before their home courts, but in front of international tribunals and other organs. Such competitions have opened the doorway for more human rights classes in law schools, more clinical training programs, more NGOs dedicated to human rights law, and overall more lawyers dedicated to participating in an expanded notion of a human rights community. As demonstrated in this volume, moot court competitions have revolutionized human rights legal education in Africa, Europe and the Americas. The yearly Inter-American Human Rights Moot Court Competition was established in 1995.The full text of the hypothetical cases, bench memoranda, and winning memorials from the first ten years of this Competition are included as a resource to be used creatively by scholars, NGOs, international organizations, governments, practitioners, students, etc, to further promote human rights legal obligations. ...
