Product Description

The general aim of this handbook is to present a practical approach to the analysis of acid-base problems in the clinical setting with the goal of enabling the clinician to create an acid-base differential diagnosis. The content of the handbook was developed from courses given to medical students, residents, and renal fellows at UCLA. The handbook begins with a review of the concepts required to generate an acid-base differential diagnosis. In the initial chapter, the modified Henderson equation is emphasized. This equation will help the clinician acquire an intuitive understanding of the physiologic interrelationships underlying the pathogenesis of acid-base disorders. The initial chapter also discusses each of the four cardinal acid-base disorders in depth. The goal of this chapter is to introduce the clinician to the essential concepts, which are required to understand acid-base problems. The focus of subsequent chapters is on the approach to interpreting simple and mixed acid-base disorders. Each case is analyzed thoroughly followed by a series of teaching points. Initially, simple acid-base diagnoses are discussed in detail. Mixed acid-base disorders are then thoroughly analyzed. A series of short cases is then presented to help consolidate the concepts learned in the previous chapters. In the final chapter, the interested reader will confront many of the complexities and limitations of current acid-base diagnosis. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars These "Readers" are Just the Author Promoting Himself
The book is nonsense. The author has attempted to promote himself by writing phony reviews.

1-0 out of 5 stars Biobalance
A physicist, the author of this book doesn't get to the diet until page 133 of a 172-page book. You'll find the actual diet in the Appendix! What is the rest of the book devoted to? Expounding on the evils of other diets and psychotherapy. It's not that the author is wrong in his stipulation that pH balance in the body may be the most important aspect of health and nutrition; however, 1.) he takes a very narrow view of a large picture, and 2.) he doesn't help you gain an understanding of balancing pH in your body. (Plus he wastes a lot of the reader's time trying to convince you about the value of his diet based on his anecdotal experiences.) If you want to learn the basic principles involved (which explain why some of this author's recommendations might actually make sense), read Sang Whang's "Reverse Aging." The book is also a much more pleasant read lacking the harranging and condescension of Dr. Wiley's book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Reasons why this book never caught on...
While well intentioned, this book is a mess.As another reviewer mentioned, his main point, that what works for one person could be very harmful for someone else, is what everyone should remember. It applies to this book as well.Clearly, it has helped some.Nevertheless, a reviewer asked "Why hasn't the press made BioBalance a household word?"Perhaps because it's so poorly written, organized and confusing. The INDEX alone is a disaster:A couple of readers mention a caffeine test, or how you can determine your profile by your tolerance to caffeine.Caffeine isn't even listed in the index, and coffee, even though the word can be found on at least a dozen pages, is listed as being on page 124.Look on 124, and it is nowhere to be found."Krebs Cycle" is listed as being found on page 113.It is not there."Dogs", yes DOGS is listed in the index, as being discussed (why?) on page 135.Again, not there. These errors are INEXCUSABLE, and the reason why this book did not catch on.As others have mentioned, he spends way too much time with verbose, complicated case histories, spends 75 pages trashing other's books, when he should be succinctly explaining the details of his program. The author claims you can quickly and easily determine your metabolic profile.Again, not from checking the index. And his list of foods to lower ones acidity includes hot dogs, french fries, heavy cream, fried chicken.Do those sound like alkaline foods to anyone?I was going to resell my copy, but I thought that would be cruel and unusual punishment for the buyer. There has to be better books on the subject.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unbalanced Book
It wasn't until page 133 out of 198 internal pages did I finally get useful information on how the plan works. Prior to page 133 it was filled with repetitive comments on how Dr. Wiley funded his own research and has no more money. It also contained detailed drawbacks to other programs such as Fit for Life, Pritikin, and many more. His message was harsh and not well written.

I am well-read and have been told by those with a master's degree in nutrition that I understand the chemical process of nutrition better than they do.I say this to help the reader of this review understand that I was expecting a detailed book on 'The Acid/Alkaline solution to the Food-Mood-Health Puzzle" not a book on how bad other programs are and that more research isn't possible because the Dr. ran out of money.

This is the first negative review I've ever written as well.

I will continue looking to find a book that addresses the acid/alkaline issue.

5-0 out of 5 stars Speaks for itself
If only Western medicine could catch up with this truly fascinating, scientific approach to health! I use this book as my bible to food intake. The approach to each type(acidic, alkaline, or mixed) is simple although a bit tougher for females (due to menstruation). I had a feeling that I was acidic just based on the food that I prefer and from a test used from another acid/alkaline book, "The Acid Alkaline Balnce Diet" by Felicia Kliment(using niacin on an empty stomach). Since commencing this approach (11/2002) I have rarely been sick and have maintained a lean muscle mass throughout. I supplement this approach with the consumption of clean water, take enzymes with each meal, and have MSM and coral calcium twice a day (do your own research). Living this way isn't exactly cheap but the benefits outweigh the cost.
I've never trusted the American approach to healthcare so this book opened my eyes. I truly feel for Dr. Wiley and his frustration with the establishment and hope my epiphany will be shared by others in the near future.

Product Description
With more than 50,000 first-edition copies sold, this expanded second edition provides the latest information on restoring your body’s acid-alkaline balance

• Discusses the role of enzyme supplements, prebiotic and probiotic complexes, and antioxidants in neutralizing and eliminating acids

• Addresses the relationship of proper hydration to essential enzyme activity and acid elimination

• Outlines a sample alkaline detoxification diet

Most people consume an abundance of highly processed foods that acidify the body. As a result, they are afflicted with health problems ranging from minor skin irritations, chronic fatigue, back pain, and depression to arthritis, ulcers, and osteoporosis. To enjoy optimum health, the body needs balanced quantities of alkaline and acid substances. In The Acid-Alkaline Diet for Optimum Health, naturopath and detoxification expert Christopher Vasey shows how a simple change in diet to restore your acid-alkaline balance can result in vast improvements in health.

With two new chapters, this updated and expanded second edition provides the latest information on proper hydration and deacidification, important alkalizing supplements, and how to eliminate the body’s accumulated acids through intestinal cleansing. It also includes a new, detailed example of an alkaline detoxifying diet. Rather than organizing alkaline and acid foods based on their chemical composition, Vasey categorizes foods by their effect on the body, explaining that some foods, such as fruits, can have either an alkalizing or an acidifying effect, depending on who eats them. He describes how to determine your acid levels and how to design a diet best suited for your particular health needs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise and understandable
Reviewed by Irene Watson for Reader Views (09/10)

"When its [body] internal environment becomes acidified, the body can fall ill in three different ways." (p.16, 17) Vasey continues "The first is connection to the activity of enzymes...Enzymes can perform their task correctly only in an environment with a clearly defined pH; otherwise their activity can be disrupted or even cease completely....The second way the body becomes ill is due to the harsh, corrosive nature of acids present in excess amounts within the tissues....The third cause of suffering from excess acid is loss of minerals, since the body gives up alkaline minerals to neutralize acids."Too much acid in the system causes inflammation; skin issues such as eczema, hives, itching, and red patches; excessive sweat; low strength of white blood cells; and problems with the skeleton and teeth.

Acidosis is a huge problem in Western countries and is perpetuated by lack of vegetables in the diet and over consumption of tobacco, coffee, tea, and alcohol. As well, stress is a huge culprit in creating an acidic environment in the body.

Vasey gives us concise information in lay terms. In addition to information on understanding the importance of having a balanced pH level, he explains how to self-test with litmus paper (available over the counter) and interpreting the results. As well, he lists symptoms that may be caused by the imbalance.

Once the reader understands the conditions, Vasey offers lists of acidic and alkaline foods. He also suggests how to maintain a balanced diet with suggestions for meals.American diet for breakfast is often white bread (or variation of, e.g. pastry, muffin, donut,) jam/jelly and coffee with milk and sugar. This is highly acidic and sets the body in a downward motion immediately.Add the stress of the day and you have created an environment that is conducive to illness.Replacing breakfast with alkalizing foods such as fresh fruit, yoghurt, coffee substitute, almonds, or raw vegetables would not only satisfy the body with nutrients but create a pH balance.

"The Acid-Alkaline Diet for Optimum Health" by Christopher Vasey is an important book to be read.Designing our own diet to obtain and maintain a balanced body is the next step in having optimum health, something that most of us desire.Let's get rid of over-the-counter antacids and heal our body naturally!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read!
A must-read for everyone in America. Easy to read. Understand how, in the process of "processing" food, our bodies become either acidic or alkaline, depending on our diet. The typical American diet is shockingly imbalanced, lacking severely in veggies/produce, but heavy on protein and starch, putting our body's pH into a highly acidic state, making us prone to a host of health ailments, from cancer, to acid reflux, to brittle nails. Shows how to test body's pH, correct imbalance, restore health. Johns Hopkins University research has recently confirmed this fact. A life-changing book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Informative!
This is a very good and informative book and opens the eyes to all the "BAD" foods we eat, and how to balance that with good foods.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for a guidance on how to work towards a heathier you
I read this book in conjunction with several others (specially, the Ph Miracle by R Young and the Acid Alkaline Food Guide by S Brown and L Trivieri) and this book was the perfect complement to them because of its practicality.

Where the other two books present the acidifying and alkalizing effects of foods in general, this book actually highlights the fact that foods can have a different effect depending on who eats them. It also explains that you can flush your acids by using supplements rather than going 100% alkaline during 7 weeks, as suggested by Dr Young (and even though you cannot find those in the US, he explains what you should find in them which makes it possible for you to actually get something equivalent). The method suggested for testing your body acidity level is also very practical and I found out, better than the ones suggested in other places.

This book is also good as a standalone book, as it explains the theory of acid and alkaline balance quite well, although not as completely, from a physiological standpoint (I felt) than the other two books. However, compared to those, this one is more detailed on the composition of the foods and why a particular food would produce an alkalizing or an acidifying effect.

You will read a lot of reviews from skeptical persons. Just their reviews show they did not read any litterature on the subject. Indeed, if they did, they would know it is not about making the stomach alkaline, nor any other part of the body specifically ; rather, it is about achieving a balance by avoiding bombarding your body with two many foods that produce an acidifying effect on your body, forcing it to use minerals to eliminate them, and forcing your organs (kidneys, pancreas, liver) to work like crazies to help your body eliminate the acids.

My position is always the same - if it cannot harm, why not try it for yourself and see if you get results ? In this case, it cannot harm because the approach is far from imbalanced - Vasey never recommends to cut out any food, to the contrary. So if you're looking to improve your health, whether you're dealing with osteoporosis, overweight, fatigue, candidose, repeated infections (specially sinus, throat, UTI), thyroid or kidney disfunction, cancer... you can just give it a try and get back to your "normal life" if you do not see improvements after 3 months or so.

I only have one disagreement with Vasey - which is on the milk. But this is a whole another story.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Acid Alkaline Diet
This book is a must read! The Acid-Alkaline Diet, takes you to the core of good health and teaches you step-by-step. It gives you the knowledge of how food works in the body and helps you better understand how to take care of this amazing machine.Make a commitment to yourself, it's your life, read the book. 1-0 out of 5 stars Unsubstantiated drivel
This is such a confusing writing that I must write a word of warning. I am doing some private research on acid/ alkaline theories. Not only does this book fail to deliver what it claims it should do, it does not contribute anything serious to the acid/ alkaline balance theories of health. The scientific data included are used in a haphazard manner. The acid - alkaline homeostasis is inadequately explained, only touched upon in a lay person manner. While the message - stay away from toxic foods and environments - is a safe message to print, the book itself does not deliver any substantial information on the topic it purports to enlighten. If I were an editor I would have refused it, and asked the author if she is qualified enough to write. This is not meant personally to offend the author; she probably meant well; it is intended as a warning for people interested in scientific information as opposed to reading impressions.

1-0 out of 5 stars Nothing new!
I am totally disappointed in this book.Nearly everything in it I've already read in other books...much of it is word for word! The title is false... there is no "diet" or "program".In my opinion if you are going to buy a book on this subject, a better choicewould be "Eat Right for Your Metabolism".In it you'll find much of the same information, better organized, plus menu plans for each type.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not very useful
Apart from some good general points there was no useful information in this book.
For example: vegetable juice would be good but how to make the stuff is not mentioned. A four day rotation diet is suggested, but what on earth you should be eating the 4 mornings after the 1 day of 'bread for breakfast'- no clue.

There also were a few things that bothered me - the author observes some effect in a handful of people (often only 1) and then draws general conclusions from that. To me this is scientifically flawed. She also seems to be suggesting thyroid medication for pretty much every condition (but NEVER mentions getting tested for thyroid antibody levels once your TSH/T4/T3 levels are off).

In short "eat healthy stuff and things will somehow balance themselves" seems to be the message, which I know to be not true.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative nutritional book backed by science...
...after making some small diet changes I got from reading this book, I have noticed a significant increase in my energy levels. Every chapter is broken down by a particular ailment and the end of the chapter is summed up with what supplements and dietary changes are needed to increase the health of the reader. Very informative!!

Product Description
Over the last five years, there has been an explosion of bestselling acid/alkaline based diets. These have ranged from weight loss to diabetes management. While hundreds of thousands of people have gone on this diet that balances the pH level of your body, they have had to put up with the limited food guides contained in each book. Now, health experts Dr. Susan Brown and Larry Trivieri have created a complete resource for people wanting to widen their food choices. The Acid/Alkaline Food Guide offers dieters an easy-to-follow guide to the most common foods that influence your body’s pH levels.

The book begins by explaining what the acid/alkaline of your body has to do with the acid/alkaline influence of foods. It then explains how the pH of foods, once eaten, may change in your body—as citric acid fruits, once digested, become alkaline. As complicated as this process is, the authors provide the guidelines for the analysis of the foods covered in the book. This section is then followed by a listing of thousands of foods and their acid/alkaline ranges. Included are insets and groups that can help the reader better direct their food searches.

This is the first complete acid/alkaline food guide to include today’s modern diet. It will quickly become the first resource to turn to when preparing meals or ordering food. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Quick guide that's worth its weight in gold.
The A/A Food Guide is a nice layman's breakdown of the diet we all need to follow if we ever hope to maintain the same energy and vitality in our adult lives that most people (in America at least) only experience when they are children. This stuff is not rocket science, but with the level of misinformation, corporate food propaganda and misplaced skepticism we are unfortunately bombarded with every single day, you would think it is.

The message I took away from this excellent little book, which I already suspected was true based on my own personal experience, is this: 95%+ of fruits and vegetables have an alkalizing (i.e., healing) effect on your body.100% of meats, dairy products and ESPECIALLY man-made so-called "food products" have an acidifying (i.e., draining) effect on your body.Combine that with the fact that many external factors such as emotional stress and physical exertion also have an acidifying effect on your body as well and you are looking at the reality that we must consume far more fruits and vegetables than animal proteins in order to maintain optimum health. And it goes without saying that man-made chemical garbage--e.g., aspartame--has no place in our diets whatsoever.Anyone who has an issue with these undeniable facts can take it up with our evolutionary ancestors--their eating habits are what determined, as homo sapiens, what our ideal diet is today.I personally don't need any 'scientific' proof for this theory because I have lived it, as a guinea pig, from consuming nothing but acidifying foods for almost a decade and feeling 30 years older than my actual age with frequent bizarre health problems, to consuming mostly alkalizing foods and feeling like a kid again within weeks, both mentally and physically.Just giving up coffee alone (extremely acidifying) I noticed my vitality skyrocket.I recommend that you get this book and start today.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Acid-Alkaline Food Guide
This book is a helpful and well-organized resource. It fits neatly into a purse or pocket for a ready reference at the grocery store.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I bought this book because I had borrowed a book from a friend and couldn't find the title. This book was not nearly as good and didn't have the information or the food list I wanted.
Too simplistic; too general.

4-0 out of 5 stars informative reading
I am new to the concept of acid/alkaline dieting and have been very confused by the conflicting array of information on the subject. the way I am dealing with the confusion is by getting as many varied opinions on the subject and then letting me own intuition guide me. I found this book informative and easy to read. ... Read more

Product Description
This volume summarises and reviews the enormous progress made over the past two decades in solid acids and bases, with emphasis on fundamental aspects and chemical principles. In recent years many new kinds of solid acids and bases have been found and synthesized. The surface properties (in particular, acidic and basic properties) and the structures of the new solids have been clarified by newly developed measurement methods using modern instruments and techniques. The characterized solid acids and bases have been applied as catalysts for diversified reactions, many good correlations being obtained between the acid-base properties and the catalytic activities or selectivities. Recently, acid-base bifunctional catalysis on solid surfaces is becoming a more and more important and intriguing field of study. It has been recognized that the acidic and basic properties of catalysts and catalyst supports play an important role in oxidation, reduction, hydrogenation, hydrocracking, etc. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book
Acid and Alkaline is a small book on a very large topic - how to stay healthy and disease free by eating the proper foods. What we intake by eating and drinking controls our body chemistry (ph), and excessive acid internally promotes a magnitude of poor health issues.Balancing the acid and alkaline is the key to longevity and happiness according to the author, as well as maintaining the minerals in the body fluids.Much technical data is presented, so it may read like a chemistry textbook at times, but is directed at thoughtful intelligent people who appreciate the detailed information instead of just a prescription of what to eat without the WHY.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thanks for a great book on acidosis -- and the wonderful gems of advice for a good life.
This is a great book on acid/alkaline balance in the body.It is technical, but quite readable -- written by a Japanese man called Herman Aihara. Towards the end of this short book, he gets a little more philosophical -- inserting gems of Japanese wisdom. In a section on Fatigue and Acidity, otherwise devoted to biochemistry -- he wraps it up with:

"Walking or gardening in the early morning will be the best exercise and result in a tireless body and a joyous and healthy life".

I love it.Elsewhere, discussing a macrobiotic diet, he gives us (out of nowhere):

"Of hard work, gardening with bare feet is best."

These are a reminder to us that when reading on a subject we should not be hide-bound by one culture's myopia.

Well done Mr Aihara. Thanks for a great book on acidosis -- and the wonderful gems of advice for a good life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great primer for acid and alkaline forming foods
This book is a very important one, and very well done.I had to study it a little harder than some people, as I am not very chemically inclined. But with study it was graspable, and what is learned here is extremely important. The reason he goes into the detail he does, is because he is not giving you a list of foods to eat.He is teaching you how to choose foods for yourself.I think this is very important for anyone (especially) who is doing macrobiotics. It really explains what your doing, instead of just saying it's yin or yang.Once you learn the principles in this book, it is also easy to apply it to other diets you may find. You want to make sure that you have alkaline forming foods in your body, and this book teaches you how! Some things in the book are his opinion, and he tells you that. There are many "I think" sentences in this book.I think he's done a wonderful job and a great service with this book, and heartily recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book about the internal diet!
This book contains very important information about how to balance one's internal body chemistry which is the key to health.

His quadrant chart of a balanced meal is excellent.I have been following it and advising others about it for almost twenty years.

Aihara alludes to and I also explain to people how their external diet--over 125 possible household problems--has an even greater impact on one's health and affects internal body chemistry.

5-0 out of 5 stars a must-read for those interested in the macrobiotic diet
First off, i am neither a chemist nor a nutritionist: i actually have almost no background in either except for high school chem class-- and i only just became interested in eating healthy, let alone consciously-- and i'm finding this book is not only the most accessible chemistry book i've ever read, but is also the most clear explanation of what exactly is going on with the macrobiotic diet.
Unlike alot of the other books explaining the principles of macro and the acid-alkaline balance, this is largely a scientific explanation of exactly what are the chemical reactions *causing* the different foods we eat to have various effects on us, rather than simply instructions on how much of what to eat per day etc. For me personally, i like to go in to any program informed; and for a while i cringed at the idea of having to go heavilly into chemistry to know what the macro nutritionists are really talking about-- but i would definatelly push this as an excellent introduction: concise, elegant, comprehensive and suprisingly accessible. I might even suggest this book to someone just starting out learning chemistry of any sort; i wish i had had this book around when i was first learning the subject :) . Aihara is good at raising interest in the subject, and also at building up to it: framing the entire discussion in terms of where cells first took on all the traits they still have: in the ocean water where they evolved. It's a great way to introduce the subject and at a slender 177 pages of text, a good place to get your bearings or, if you like, just a good read. ... Read more

Product Description
This book will give students a thorough grounding in pH and associated equilibrium, material absolutely fundamental to the understanding of many aspects of chemistry. This book uses the new theoretical developments that have led to more generalized approaches to equilibrium problems which are often simpler than the approximations which they replace. For example: Acid-base problems are readily addressed in terms of the proton condition, the graphical approach of Bjerrum, Hägg, and Sillén is used to illustrate the orders of magnitude of the concentrations of the various species involved in chemical equilibria, and in the description of acid-base titrations a general master equation is developed. This text also provides a continuous and complete description of the entire titration curve and graphical estimates of the steepness of titration curves. Finally, an entire chapter is devoted to what the pH meter measures, and to the experimental and theoretical uncertainties involved. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A New Approach to Solution Equilibria
Teaching solution equilibria has always been a difficult task for college professors. Professor de Levie has shown how this subject can be made more palatable for students. This is most clearly demonstrated in his discussion of acid-base titrations. By using spead-sheet techniques and treating pH as an independent rather than dependent variable, titration curves are easily generated without making approximations. de Levie's approach is unique. The popular textbooks dealing with this subject still involve the "old fashioned" approach, which is a pedagogical nightmare. This book is a MUST for all those who teach solution equilibria at the freshman and sophmore levels in colleges and universities. I doubt that it would be a suitable textbook for the students in these courses because of the detail involved. However, the book is highly recommended for courses dealing with solution equilibria at the upper division level.

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost finished...
This is a really good book. It teachs how to solve simple acid-base calculations from a crude sketch in the sand, to more advanced cases were you need iterative methods. It's actually more practical and directed against finding the CHEMICAL information than all simpler books I have encountered. It's not an introduction booklet in chemistry; it's more for the somewhat more advanced but still practical uses.
But it's marred with the lack of a really thorough proofreading. If you study the text hard because you need to understand the techniques thoroughly, you will discover what must be "typing errors". And there are diagrams that show one to three curves less than what is descriebed in the text. And none of these curves are numbered, so you can't be sure which curves are overlapped with supporting lines. - This makes the book unnecessary labourous to read.
If these errors are removed in a second edition, the book will deserve 5 stars.
In a book of this type it would also do with a handful of excersises at the end of each chapter, with answers at the end of the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
It is a very good book, spetially for basic analytical chemistry. It is difficult to find a book where the student can find a lot of examples very well considered. The acid base equibrium is the basis for understandingionic equilibrium and sometimes you lose inside the mathematical aspectsbut forgetting the chemical aspects. I recommend this book, not only forstudents but also for profesors in the subject. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential and rational approach of body liquids management
I knew this book during my career of medicine in León Guanajuato, México. There was an sixth edition book. I learned on this item guided by my tutorDr. Jesús Cuéllar Zavala a therapist phiscician in Hospital Aranda de laParra in León.I can tell it's easy to read, and the concepts that bringsare quickly understood. Continue my career as general surgeon, and thisbook, was still my quick reference on electrolyte imballance and wheneverI've had the oportunity to recomend it, I've done it.

Now, as professor,I present a lecture and a workshop about water and electrolyte imballancein surgery to medicine students of sixth semester in Universidad Autónomade Guadalajara, México, and again it has been a very useful tool. I believethat every univerity in world should account with this book, and that everystudent may find in it, a clasical and good medical reference. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for the price
I purchased this book having already read most of it. That being said, I knew what the book was like. It is very informative in an easy-to-understand way. The pictures help illustrate the points and add some humor to an otherwise boring (for me ) topic. My only complaint is that some mistake was made during the printing and/or editorial process. There were typo's and font problems throughout Chapters 10 and 11. Example: pg 284 at the bottom.Other than that, a good purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars very good
Very well written book. I recommend this book to everyone interested in understanding the basic concepts of fluid homeostasis, electrolytes, and acid-base matters. A lot of images, large font - so don't be scared by the many pages.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Fluid, Electrolyte and Acid-Base Companion
This is an excellent resource for those having difficulty mastering Acid-Base, Fluid and Electrolyte Disorders. This is the most comprehensive, and easy to understand book on this subject matter. Ideal not only for medical students, but for residents as well.
Recommend 2nd Edition, to include Divalent Cations; Ca, Mg, and P. Try to tackle Bartter's, Gitelman's a little more. May also touch on Liddle's Syndrome.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Fluid, Electrolyte and Acid-Base Companion
This book copies the enormously popular style of Dubin's EKG book by placing a large picture at the top of every page and then some text and fill-in sentences (as a review) below it. I like this style and find that I can read and absorb much more information from it. Buy and master this book as a first year student taking renal physiology, as a second year student learning about electrolyte and acid base disorders, or as a house officer dealing with patients on every service in the hospital. ... Product Description

The ABC of Acid-Base Chemistry provides physiologists, medical students, and physicians with an intelligible outline of the elements of physiological acid-base chemistry.

This new edition of Horace W. Davenport's standard text takes into account different ways of looking at the problems of acid-base derived from new instrumentation. The exposition has been modified to allow the student to apply his understanding to other systems of description of the acid-base status. Although the pH system has been retained, there is increasing emphasis on the use of hydrogen ion concentration.

Topics discussed include: partial pressure of gases, composition of alveolar gas, transport of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood, buffer action of hemoglobin and seperated plasma, oxygenated whole blood and reduced blood, concepts of base excess and base deficit, and chemical regulation of respiration.

"Any reader who clearly understands the subject matter of this book will have a firm grounding in the principles of the subject; I find it the clearest text of this type that I have read."—British Journal of Hospital Medicine

"This little book is of great value to chemically trained physicians and medical students who want to get a clearer idea of the physiology of acid base chemistry in the blood."—The Journal of Gastroenterology
