Must-Have Reference Book for Acupuncture
This book is a must-have reference book for studying acupuncture and oriental medicine.It goes through the chinese name, meaning, and location of all points, plus other material.

A precious Text for Acupuncture practitioner
What I love about this text is that it is a professional Acupuncture textbook. It has a clear illustration and picture of the acupoint and the meridian. It also has the name of the point with Chinese Character. The content is sorted in orderly and easy to search or study. The print paper is thick and nice this makes the textbook look serous and precious which I love. The one I have is black cover so it looks grace. This book also contains many diseases & symptoms and tells what acupoints should be used for treatment (in TCM we call acupuncture prescription).
Only what I feel it should improve is that some acupoints are shown by female explicit expression such as the breast. I personally think that is not necessary. The other thing is that this book neither has Ear Acupuncture nor Moxibustion like what acupuncture textbook should.You may need extra book for these two parts I mentioned as they are very useful in clinic as well.

This is just outstanding
Anyone who is studying acupuncture needs this book. Without this, points location would be very difficult. This is a book to take with you during study and for you when you have your own practice. This is worth every penny and something to treasure throughout your career - wherever you are at the moment, be it student or qualified.

Best Reference for its Niche, but consider the DVD multimedia version.
A very well conceived, comprehensive and organized text of acupuncture, for the whole journey from beginning to advanced practice.It provides a very rich and in depth summary of information about each point, both in terms of modern usage and plus selected highlights from theclassical chinese texts.There is more specific detail on each point in this manual than I have found in any other source, including for the extra points.It is a delightful resource to just read.The language is clear, straightforward and does not bog down in overly heavy detail either.It is well enough organized to assist in problem solving for particular conditions.

But, I recommend searching a little further and considering an even richer treasure -- the DVD multimedia verison of this same Manual.It contains everything in the printed text plus some additional enhancements.On the DVD, it is generally easier to appreciate the organization of points by their meridians, their inter-relationships and to follow well-designed sections detailing out the anatomy of critical landmarks such as the spinous processes, ribs, and other bony landmarks.Both the text and DVD contain thorough coverage on precautions to take when needling near organs.Both have extensive charts, historical information and cross-referencing by indications.

The interactive study tools in the DVD version and the ability to construct your own practice tests, as well as the ease of computer-added search make the digital version my favorite over the printed text.

One Caveat:It is important to know that the DVD employs frustrating DRM limitations which require that the user keep the DVD in their disk drive anytime they want to use the program.I find this intermittently slows down acquisition of a link and occasionally necessitates rebooting the entire computer due to some odd hangup.Printed texts fortunately bypass these irritations. ... This book is great for amateurs!
I use trigger points to relieve pain and this book has pretty pictures and gives you very nice descriptions and photos to let you know how to relieve some painful areas.Of course, if you haven't gone to school you won't understand the depth descriptions and so forth, but the pictures make this book worth the money.

Good, but not great
I like this book for point location.Anatomical references are very good and I feel I can "grok" the point.I found the trigger point areas somewhat tedious, but liked the excellent anatomical references.For a "visual person" this one is great.It's a little thick though.

Very good for what it covers
I have found this book very useful for certain points.Unfortunately the Body Acupuncture Points section only covers about 117 points and does not cover all the points I need.For example, for the Lung Channel it only includes Lu-1, Lu-5, Lu-7, Lu-9, and Lu-11.The Pericardium Channel only includes Pc-3, Pc-6, and Pc-7.The Kidney Channel covers Ki-3, Ki-6, Ki-7, and Ki-27.The drawings and pictures, as well as the information provided on these points, are very good.I like the fact that not only do they have drawings but actual human body pictures locating the points, and it does show most of the points on these pictures, even though it does not name or describe them.

Some additional points are shown in Section 3, Trigger Points, but that section is basically by muscle or section and the points come incidental to treatment and are not listed in the index so it is not easy to find them.Also the information on these points is limited to a diagram and a brief description of location so it is useful only for treating the particular trigger point.This section is the largest section in the book and covers 35 muscles or muscle groups.The information provided in this section appears to be very good.

Part 2 of the book, Ear Acupuncture, is very good and probably would rate five stars.

I would probably buy this book again because it is very good for the covered areas with useful concise information, but it is limited.If it covered more points, it would definitely be a five star book.

Very basic, not much depth
I have been teaching TCM and other forms of Traditional Oriental Medicine for about 10 years now. The only reason I use this book is because it isrequired for the National Board Certification. Other books were written in English and can better explain the depth and variation needed to be a good practitioner. The translation is difficult at times to understand. This should be had on your shelf as a reference but not as your primary text.

Purchase only if you are required to do so...
To give an honest review i would undoubtedly repeat what many have already stated, let me instead offer my history with the book. When i entered TCM school a friend who was a recent graduate and handed me her copy, she said "you will need to memorize this...it's my gift to you." I said "won't you want this for your practice, to reference?" She said "no, i would never open it again." This was strange to me at the time, then of course, like most students of TCM i was forced to, as she said, memorize it, got through the boards and then a friend was entering the program, thus i handed it on...he said, "won't you need it?" And of course i said..."no, this is a book i was required to read, for me now...i will reference other texts" the actual end of the sentence for which i held my tongue (so as not to discolor his experience) would have been "it is a worthless pile of trash, written in a grammar no better than a fourth grade elementary student."
That pretty much sums it up. If you are a student, buy it, read it, memorize it...then after the boards pass it on, otherwise there are a number of decent texts available that are more worthwhile.

Software comes with book
I use this book for school.I've been told by my friends that the software that comes with this book is great but I can't use it on my Mac.

Practical clinical guide
It is the textbook from which a majority of acupuncture board exam questions are selected from. I especially like its point selections for treating a list of common illnesses toward the back of the book. The author not only does a good job explaining why so and so points are selected for such an illness, but also only list the very essential andeffective points.
Deadman's Manual of Acupuncture have much better points diagrams.

Love Deborah and Her Book
Deborah and Warren share a most important facet of well documented light healing in this book. Applying flower essences to their corresponding meridians is moving our bodies consciousness to receive the sacred gifts of the imprinted clusters within the essences. This is a safe way to open up our stagnancies to the divine. Moving away from the use of metal within traditional acupuncture, and into the delicate soulful grace of the flower realm, they describe full body applications for the bodyworker or the self-healer. Amazing useful book!
I love this book!I use it regularly in the clinic where I work and clients find the treatment very useful and relaxing.There's lovely descriptions of each flower essence and detailed photos showing application.

A little to "flowery" for me
I've been using Bach flower essences in my therapeutic massage practice for over 20 years with amazing results!The information presented in this book is of benefit for anyone interested in massage and acupressure.The pictures are beautifully done, and the explanations of point locations easy to follow.But I found the writing of the main text to be too "flowery" at times (yes, I know that's a pun...) - just too esoteric.It may turn off readers who are new to the subject and not into new-age lingo.But useful otherwise.

Stood the test of time!
What does the 1981 copyright have to do with anything? The book has stood the test of time. I've had my copy since 1984 and still refer to it regularly. Some don't like the book because it covers the acupoints by anatomical region. Point descriptions include traditional location descriptions, precise anatomical locations, traditional functions, indications, illustrative combinations, classical combinations, needling method plus additional remarks.

There are separate sections on ear acupuncture, surgical techniques, needling methods in the Nan Jing (Classic of Difficulties), a concise theory and diagnosis section. Of note, the index has the main pages for each acupoint in bold to set them apart from other references, a perhaps small but important indication of the thought that went into the layout of the book. If I had to have only one book on acupuncture, this would be it. Fact is, with all of its 741 pages, this book is the bible, at least in English!

Has flaws, but don't we all!
This is a detailed and comprehensive work, with a great deal of useful information despite it's 1981 copyright.However, the organization of meridians and points is a bit chaotic, as the authors have attempted to create a "functional clinical" model of point selection and location. The meridians and points are divided by body region, "common" points, extra points and points of "rare" usage.Unless you subscribe to the same 150 common points as the authors, you will have to search around a bit. The indices do help in that regard.

The individual point descriptions are among some of the best I've seen.The meridian charts are the cheap Chinese type, form a lump in the middle of the book and are better supplemented with other sources.I can't say I refer to this text much, but when I do it's very useful.

Great "all around" Book....
This book is great for a "overall review".

Do not use this book alone however, I would use it WITH the required books from school.

Like most books, 70-80% of the book is the same/similar to the others, however that 20%+ can make a difference and sometimes even help you "click" and understand a concept or lesson.

A Voluminous (only slightly flawed) Mainstay
This book got short shrift in our education even though we bought in in the first year or two.

It is essential for its coverage of auricular and scalp acupuncture (not to mention other imaging styles such as "nose acupuncture").It also has a slightly different view of channel pathology symptoms from "Chinese Acupuncture and Moxibustion" (CAM) or "Foundations of Chinese Medicine."

The way they organize the body points (by regions of the body and commonality of usage), however, is too counter-intuitive to be useful in practice.

In fact, I think that Deadman's Manual of Acupuncture would make a much better body point reference than Shanghai, CAM, or Foundations... Deadman's book is entirely based on the classics and cites its sources.

They really should put out a new edition of Shanghai with better body point organization.

But, for the student and practitioner, this is a gem. ... Read more

Perfect Book on the basics of Acupuncture
This book is excellent for describing Acupuncure, the history and the benefits in a clear and concise manner. There are case studies, comparisons between Western and Eastern medicine and detailed explanations.I loved this book and read it in two nights.

acupuncture anyone?
Saw this book sitting on my chiropractor's desk..in my opinion..get acupuncture from a licensed acupuncturist.. LAc's have 4-6 years of education whereas most chiropractors have less than 1 year.This book is great for a beginner, really covers the basics.By the way, acupuncture is amazing!

Nice Book
What I like about this book, is that it lists hypothetical scenarios of patients coming in with specific health problems, guides you through the diagnosis of the patient based on TCM, and outlines the treatment points.

Definitely a useful addition to a TCM student's library.

Exactly what I was looking for
I bought a number of acupuncture books to learn a little bit more about the treatments I am getting.I really wanted to know the general history of the subject and how it works and why.This was definitely the best book out of the six I looked at!There were some other good ones, but they were too involved and much more suited to someone studying the practice.Some were just too elementary or dummed down.This presented a very intelligent and interesting historical review and then taught you the basics of the body's systems, meridians, points, and gave examples of how certain diseases, ailments, injuries are treated.Not all encompassing, but just the exact amount of information that I wanted and needed.I would recommend it to anyone considering acupuncture or anyone who just wants to have a better understanding of it.It's a pretty quick read that I did in a matter of a few nights.

This is phenomenal book!
Great book,great info and I will definitely be going to an acupuncturist after reading this.I have since making this reveiw been to one twice. OMG it was incredible. No sinus pressure or headaches for EIGHT MONTHS before I had to go back. It sure beats poppin allergy pills etc. and less expensive and more healthy in the long run. Downside is it is a little expensive but less than what all med and docs and missed work add up to!! My first visit was 100 bucks and 75.00 each visit thereafter, not bad consider how freakin awesome it made me feel and how long it lasted. ... Read more

Mistitled book
The title should state "Complete Idiot's Guide to Acupressure" because there's very little puncture data. Not worth the price in my opinion. I learned from it but not what I was hoping.

Is this wise?
While I admire many other books in the series (particularly the volume on satanic love-making techniques) I was a little concerned by the wisdom of this volume. Should we really be encouraging 'complete idiots' to try their hand at sticking needles into the nervous systems of others in the name of medicine? Still, it's not quite as worrrying as the announcement of the forthcoming 'The Complete Idiot's Guide to Performing Gender-Realignment Surgery'.

Disappointment
I am looking to understand accupuncture and accupressure without having to suffer through reading text-book style presentations on the subject.Hence my choice of an "Idiot's Guide" book -- I thought it would give me, in layman's terms, a greater understanding of the concepts on which accupuncture and accupressure are based -- kind of a mini-course on the subject.Instead, it focused on what practitioners of these medical arts can do for the patient and what to expect when visiting a practitioner.

While the book does provide descriptions of points that can be stimulated on one's body to alleviate selected conditions as well as visuals in the form of pictures, these are quite limited and not easy to follow.

Also, as I read the book, I was annoyed by the poor editing of the text.Frequent grammatical problems undermine the book's credibility.

Hence my disappointment.

Great Introduction
If you know nothing about Acupuncture or Acupressure and are considering treatment this book is a great introduction.Although it talks about Acupressure more than Acupuncture the pressure points are the same for both methods.It talks about the most common issues people seek treatment for, explains what to expect on your first visit, and the basic science behind this ancient form of treatment. I highly recommend it for people who are considering this treatment and have no experience with it.

Great Book
I got this book for my daughter who is a licensed acupuncturist and was pregnant at the time. She was very pleased with the book for herself and now says she can use it in her practice. Called it a "great textbook."

Learn how acuupuncture really got started in the western world
Acupuncture took off slowly in the West.

Valuable, plain and simple
This is a most valuable addition to any accupuncturist's collection of literature. It offers some of the earliest clinical trials on Accupuncture, carried out by Felix Mann.

The book shows his research and findings, discusses the meridians and how they relate to his dermatomes, and generally discusses the TCM theory (which includes the 5 element interactions explained in great detail.) At times, some of the diagrams seem crowded, but the information in this book dwarfs that fact by far.

finally I get it!
Have been taking an extensive course in TCVM and was realy struggling with a few concepts, using this book as a back up to integrate with some Western medicine really helped me "get it"

This is the best book of veterinary acupuncture that I know that it is for sale for the internet.
It is a simple and easy book of understanding, of the way that the students, in the course beginning, need to understand the Chinese medicine, mainly the acupuncture. But for an acupunturista he is also very useful, because it serves as much as a study book and of headboard as of fast consultation, in spite of his size to turn it a little difficult to transport. But I always drop it off at my clinic and I read it whenever it remains a time. Each reading that I do learns a little more. I already possess there is him two years and I still didn't get to read it entirely. It is the book that more has been contributing to my learning as acupunturist. I recommend and a lot to all that are interested in the subject: Chinese medicine and veterinary acupuncture.

A good primer
This is a wonderful text on complementary medical therapies for pets. I highly recommend it and as a fellow holistic veterinarian and author (8 Weeks to a Healthy Dog, The Allergy Solution for Dogs, and the award-winning The Natural Health Bible for Dogs & Cats,) I found the information quite useful.

Very thorough book on veterinary acupuncture. It seems intended for veterinarians which may make it hard to digest for the lay person. The theory is very well explained, the chapters on history and studies are informative and the illustrations of points charts are excellent. It lacks on the practical side though. It gives you general knowledge but does not go deep into how to do point selection in relation to your clinical findings.

Good Pocket Atlas
This is a book you will use.If combined with Hecker, et al Color Atlas of Acupuncture: Body Points - Ear Points - Trigger Points (Complementary Medicine (Thieme)) (without the trigger point stuff) it would make a much better book.Also, they could have color coded the sections and meridians along the edge for easier identification as in the Color Atlas, but that's a minor complaint.I especially like the size and weight of this book.

Some mistakes
My first application of this book revealed several mistakes in the Stomach Meridian images. Several classmates also told me they found similar mistakes in other chapters. While this is a great book, it makes me double check and not rely on the information.

Invaluable for acupuncture school
This is the one to get - even if it's not on your "required" list.It is pocket-sized but packed full of useful, portable information.I use it for quick point reference, particularly in grand rounds.It is condensed, but complete.Has concise information on tongue and pulse diagnosis, basic Chinese medicine and all the points and meridians.My friend has the other one - lots of full-frontal nudity with real human models in her book, and it cracks us both up!Who needs that in school. What a great reference book for practicing Acupuncturists who are or will be treating children. The information on treating western children ailments is very detailed in all aspects and very easy to follow and understand.

Scott has a number of books out, they're all excellent and this one is one of the best.

Very clear and direct exposition of child patterns, good mention of herbs and and well organized presentation.The book even suggests a technique of acupuncture for the little ones which will combine safety, ease of penetration and guidelines for stimulation.

Ideal for a text book or for use in a practice.

Keep it Simple
The best thing about Julian Scott's teaching is that he keeps everything simple. This book follows that guideline, which makes a scary thought a bit less scary and a lot more realistic and possible.

Good as Pocket Size Reference.Includes some unique details less easily extracted from other sources.
This pocket atlas is well organized and I have found it very useful.It has an entirely different style than my two favorities:( Microsystems Acupuncture: The Complete Guide: Ear - Scalp - Mouth - Hand and Auriculotherapy Manual: Chinese and Western Systems of Ear Acupuncture ), but it offers intriguing additional techniques once one is ready to delve more deeply into auricular therapy as its own subdiscipline within the greater domain of acupuncture.

It would not have worked well for me as an introductory resource.Once I've had a growing sense of the landscape for auricular therapy in general, then I find there is some additional detail that has been unavailable or more obscure in my other sources.What stood out for me were the uncluttered drawings focusing on just a few inter-related points at a time, the greater detail about Nogier's later ideas, and the specifics of using gold versus silver needles.

Well worth the investment.It's size fills a very practical nitch.The most common books in this field are too big to carry around easily.

Extreme Auricularization
Good, thorough workup on auricular acupuncture, based primarily on the European work of Bahr and Nogier. More than your basic point structure but only does a decent job of illustrations. I like Theime's Microsystems illustrations better. Easy to read and correlates well with Terry Ohlson's book. Haven't gotten to the 3-Phase Nogier parts, yet. I purchased this book along with Ohlsen's auricular (a must read) and Theime's and Wang's microsystems texts. Together they cover all of the bases and then some. Definitely a recommend.

What a way to understand Nogier's works!
I found this book well detailed in a very small and consice form.It is great to carry around and even goes into meridian connections instead ofsimply organ, skeletal, etc systems. Not a self-help book
Be forewarned--this book doesn't contain a single illustration!If you were looking to learn about acupressure points to relieve some of your own ailments, you'd probably prefer Acupressure's Potent Points by Michael Reed Gach.That's what I got instead after returning this book.

Please Re-Read Pericardium-6, "The Wild Card"
This is the clearest text I have found on Chinese Medicine.So many of the large volume texts require an experienced eye to sift through and discern what is clinically useful and what is merely interesting information of no clinical use.In Art of Acupuncture Techniques everything appears to be useful.Although the book is not large in size, it is large in the author's knowledge of medicine, reflected in its comprehensible use of language and succinct presentation, containing more clinically applicable concepts than many other books.

After reading the comment from Robert Chu's student (see other reviews), I decided to reread the chapter on Neiguan, "the wild card".It seems that this was an off the cuff remark, clearly made by someone who heard the title, but had not read the chapter, and consequently the comment was not explored with an open mind by the student. The chapter begins by explaining how and why and the circumstances in which Neiguan may be referred to as a wild card.Then clearly explains the dynamic this point plays in acupuncture prescriptions.Clear-cut physiological links are mapped out, showing how and why adding this point can affect countless conditions. Also, the numerous relationships Neiguan has with other organs, meridians, and systems are included.Having a chapter dedicated to this point demonstrates its importance.The chapter ends with 58 prescriptions that include Neiguan.Intelligibly demonstrating a deep understanding of Neiguan's Physiologic Dynamic.I have tried many of these and have been amazed by my patients' feedback.The results continue to be remarkable.

I recommend this book to anyone studying and/or practicing acupuncture.As for me, I keep coming back to it, discovering new ideas and deepening those I have already explored.Additionally, the writing style seems to induce a certain way of thinking that expands my understanding in all areas of Chinese medicine, but most importantly in the clinic when I'm standing over a patient about to insert a needle (when it really matters).Thank-You for this outstanding text! ...
