Product Description
Two separate but complementary questions - theunmistakable outline of the dynamic individual and the socially andculturally constrained biographical pattern - inform this work oninternational adult education. 67 experts drawn from 22 countries andfive continents have helped to give it its compendium-like character, comprising 62 revised and enlarged papers originally presented in 1996at the Sixth International Conference on the History of AdultEducation. The language of publication is English, with additional 18German-language contributions, all prefaced by an abstract inEnglish. The period principally treated extends from the 18th to the20th century. Charting as it does the importance of personality andbiography for both the subjective educational process and thedevelopment of an education system, this systematically compiled workopens up a long neglected page not only in international educationaltheory but also in educational and cultural history. A detailedpreliminary announcement of the two conference volumes can be found inthe International Yearbook of Adult Education, ed. JoachimKnoll, Vol. 25/1997 under the title Personality and Biography inthe Spotlight of International Historical Research into AdultEducation. ... Read more

"Early Innovators in Adult Education" provides a description and analysis of individuals who made important contributions to the education of adults in the United States between 1630 and 1920. The book explores the historical roots of adult education and searches for commonalities among the biographers of the innovators across different time periods. 5-0 out of 5 stars A story that resonates in the memory
I read this extraordinary book in a single morning, and couldn't put itdown. The story Muriel Murch has to tell is in itself fascinating, but morethan that, using the simple story-telling device of personal letters, shehas succeeded in making the people around her live, and has created a vividworld in which the reader for a time --- for much longer than the readingof the book lasts, because it has a powerful resonance --- lives too. Shemade me care very much, not only about about her desire for nursingeducation and her major personal dilemmas, but also about the details andconcerns of her everyday life. This book is both humane and very human. Itis sensitively written, conveying strong emotions but withoutself-indulgence or pretension, treading the fine line that memoir-writingmust tread, its transparent honesty always ensuring that it remains on theright side. It treats of life and death, of love and family and of thestruggle for knowledge. It is often poetic but also stunninglydown-to-earth --- a true reflection, one feels, both of the realities ofthe profession of nursing, and of the remarkable character of the writer asthe reader gets to know her. Classroom fears and conflicts, familycloseness and discord, deep satisfactions and as deep frustrations --- allremain in the memory, touching and thought-provoking. This many-facetedbook is about learning, but it has a great deal to teach. ... Read more

Product Description

At the turn of the twentieth century, African Americans eager to improve their lives through higher education were confronted with the divergent points of view of two great leaders: Booker T. Washington advocated vocational training, while W. E. B.
Du Bois stressed the importance of the liberal arts. Into the fray stepped Nathan B. Young, who, as Antonio Holland now tells, left a lasting mark on that debate.
Born in slavery in Alabama, Young followed a love of learning to degrees from Talladega and Oberlin Colleges and a career in higher education. Employed by Booker T. Washington in 1892, he served at Tuskegee Institute until conflict with Washington’s vocational orientation led him to move on. During a brief tenure at Georgia State Industrial College under Richard R. Wright, Sr., he became disillusioned by efforts of whites to limit black education to agriculture and the trades. Hired as president of Florida A&M in 1901, he fought for twenty years to balance agricultural/vocational education with the liberal arts, only to meet with opposition from state officials that led to his ouster.
This principled educator finally found his place as president of Lincoln University in Missouri in 1923. Here Young made a determined effort to establish the school as a standard institution of higher learning. Holland describes how he campaigned successfully to raise academic standards and gain accreditation for Lincoln’s programs—successes made possible by the political and economic support of farsighted members of Missouri’s black community.
Holland shows that the great debate over black higher education was carried on not only in the rhetoric of Washington and Du Bois but also on the campuses, as Young and others sought to prepare African American students to become thinkers and creators. In tracing Young’s career, Holland presents a wealth of information on the nature of the education provided for former slaves and their descendents in four states—shedding new light on the educational environment at Oberlin and Tuskegee—and on the actions of racist white government officials to limit the curriculum of public education for blacks.
Although Young’s efforts to improve the schools he served were often thwarted, Holland shows that he kept his vision alive in the black community.  Holland’s meticulous reconstruction of an eventful career provides an important look at the forces that shaped and confounded the development of black higher education during traumatic times.

Product Description
This scholarly book was first written in Japanese by Noboru Koyama, and published in Tokyo in 1999. It has been translated by Ian Ruxton, and the copyright is held by the author and translator jointly. This fascinating non-fiction story, centred on the first Japanese graduate of Cambridge University (the mathematician and leading academic Kikuchi Dairoku, 1855-1917), is intimately connected with Japan's modernization (i.e. Westernization). Other students who feature and went on to distinguished careers include the multi-talented statesman Suematsu Kencho (1855-1920) and the scholar-diplomat Inagaki Manjiro (1861-1908), who founded the Japanese Club at Cambridge to study the ways of English gentlemen. This story is told here for the first time in English, and should interest all students of the Meiji era in Japan. The book includes nine black & white images, an introduction, a preface, seven appendices (none of which were in the original Japanese book), a greatly expanded bibliography and an improved index. 5-0 out of 5 stars Delighted!!
As the person honoured to be the translator into English of Noboru Koyama's interesting and important book first written in Japanese and published in Tokyo in 1999 I am delighted that a Kindle edition has at last appeared - "with a little help from my friends" in the USA!

This English book was first published as a paperback on September 1, 2004 and is now available as a paperback on amazon, and a hardcover on amazon marketplace.

In July 2009 I added one page of supplementary remarks based mainly on a June 2009 letter to 183,000 known Cambridge alumni and alumnae worldwide (of which I am proud to be one) from the present Vice Chancellor of the University (Professor Alison Richards). I also changed the cover slightly to celebrate the 800th anniversary of the founding of Cambridge University in 1209. This Kindle edition includes that update.

5-0 out of 5 stars hardcover version of popular title
KINDLE EDITION NOW AVAILABLE. See Japanese Students at Cambridge University in the Meiji Era, 1868-1912: Pioneers for the Modernization of Japan

This book is the hardcover version of a popular paperback title which I translated from Japanese to English and was first published in September 2004. I am delighted to see the hardcover has finally made it to amazon marketplace, despite not having an ISBN of its own. (The paperback has one.)

For those who would prefer the paperback it is here. You can also find reviews, images from the book and "Search Inside the Book" on that page. Please note also that the latest version of this hardcover has become an 800th Anniversary Special Edition to celebrate the founding of Cambridge University in 1209.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cultural Bonds Between Japan and Britain
This outstanding translation from Japanese gives English readers an opportunity to learn about young Japanese geniuses, such as Kikuchi Dairoku, who were sent by their country to study at Cambridge and ended up modernizing Japan. It is a scholarly work that has been translated into a most human read that fascinated me and added greatly to my knowledge of the industrialization of Japan in the 19th century. It is fortunate for today's world, that when Japan sought to modernize, she looked to such an enlightened nation as Britain for a role model. As a result, a strong cultural bond was formed between the two cultures which this book explores. The author dedicated his heart and mind to this tribute to those enlightened Japanese youths, and his work has been made accessible to the world with Ian Ruxton's ability to translate Japanese into good English prose.

5-0 out of 5 stars Diligence in Application
On the surface, this book could be said to be aimed at a specialist market, as it centres on Japanese students studying at Cambridge in the days of the British Empire. This was with the ironic view of the prevention of Western Imperialism stretching to their shores, and the adapting and embracing of many inherent values, to strengthen their own empire. So, yes, it's specialist in this sense, but the way the introduction and the contents have been written and explained, ( with perhaps traditional Japanese efficiency ), makes it a very interesting and very informative read for all who can show at least a little concentration of something 'a little on the heavy side'. As a bonus, because of the data-intensive contents, interesting snippets such as the different reigns and even much of the Japanese Calendar is here. Ultimately, it may not be for you, but you will be impressed by an absolutely staggering start, devoid of over-heavy grammar which accompanies many similar tomes. Very, very well done, Ian Ruxton.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended for anyone interested in our very small world
This wonderful translation of a Japanese classic, reinforces the importance of connection and understanding between cultures.Especially important as our world continues to shrink, acknowledging the skills and accomplishments of another without diminishingour own, is a diplomatic skill too rare in today's cross cultural politics. A scholarly work written and translated with a most human voice.

Product Description
From the early to late 1930s, a movement for a people's economy, named the "Antigonish Movement", caught the imagination of the world. It leader was Rev. Moses Coady, Nova Scotia's native son from the Margaree Valley. Journalists, liberal-minded religious leaders, papal authorities, eastern seaboard intellectuals, professors, theologians, social reformers, wild-eyed dreamers, co-operative leaders and innocent youth came from far and wide to witness the "miracle of Antigonish." Hard minds and doubting hearts simply melted as tourists of the co-operative miracle witnessed rustic lobster factories, credit unions and co-op stores spring up in communities with previously unremarkable histories. Antigonish, a small town in Nova Scotia, was transformed into an imaginative space into which people could project their social fantasies. Many people of Christian persuasion, spiritually dislocated and bewildered by the scale and scope of change in the post-World War I era, desperately wanted their leader, Moses Michael Coady, to be their modern Moses who could fashion a non-violent alternative to fascism and communism. They wanted someone to lead them out of oppression into the promised land of co-operation. Throughout his tumultuous mature life, from his mid 40s to his late 70s, Moses Coady thundered against the "vested interests" that kept the common people enchained. In this comprehensive biography, Michael Welton describes and evaluates "Little Mosie from the Margaree," his times, and the movement he created. ... Read more
