Product Description

From masks to the symbolic script of the Ashanti, symbols play an important role in all aspects of African life. These sacred items come in a breathtaking array of styles, and here, divided into six areas of cultural similarity, are some of the most beautiful, along with explanations of their meanings. Demons, for most Africans, are responsible for justice and retribution: the superb demon mask shown depicts Kponingo, who belongs to the mythical world of the Senufo in the Ivory Coast. A calabash with the beak of a hornbill, adorned with cowrie shells and made by medicine men, is a typical instrument of witchcraft. Other fascinating symbols include sculptures, cave paintings, status symbols, and art for everyday use.

Product Description

Where does 'the self' in 'myself' begin and end?And what do ideas of 'spirit' tell us about the nature of human selfhood? To investigate these poorly understood matters, veteran anthropologist, neo-shaman and paranormal healer Roy Willis spent five months in a remote part of northern Zambia exploring human consciousness in a fascinating and sometimes terrifying series of adventures.

This absorbing book tells the story of Willis' and his three local colleagues' quest, as they participate in and film rituals of ecstatic union with nature spirits and talk in depth with experts in managing the awesome powers of a world beyond the ordinary. The narrative follows the research team's day-to-day involvement with rituals of spirit revelation, healing, and exorcism, their encounters with the evil powers of sorcery, and the sometimes troubled relations between team members.

The African healers in this book emerge both as exceptional individuals and as pioneering explorers of consciousness.Their experience is surprisingly congruent with our present sense of multiple and shifting selfhoods in the age of global electronic communication.

Product Description
Newly reissued, this remains a rare work on the systems of interpretation and meaning, mythological traditions and realities of the Karanga people in Zimbabwe. The author considers the Karanga's cosmology, as a system of psychological and biological expressions, and in relation to mythological feeling and thinking. Topics covered include: creation myths; mythologies of the symbols of life and death; incest and marriage problems; forbidden sexual intercourse; pregnancy and birth; mythology as experienced reality; the mythology of an image of god; and the mythology of the night. Further cultural sources drawn on are Shona proverbs, which are to some extent included in the work. Throughout the study, the author aims to apply appropriate African, rather than narrowly Western, systems of interpretation and analysis to his material. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally-A book by an actual Yoruba Priest!
Oba Ecun captures the real deal. Finally, a real practitioner writes about his own religion. We can now refresh our minds from the the novels of intelectual writers trying to capture what can not be learned in the idealized halls of a university. We now have Oba Ecun instead of Lydia Cabrera types. The idealized Ms Cabrera, while a good writer by Cuban standards and fair anywhere else, lacks the most important element in her books-first hand knowledge. The woman never practiced the religion, and being a very occult subject especially in pre-revolutionary Cuba, she would have had to rely on dubious accounts of it, perhaps from her maid or nurse. Maybe, instead of going to live in Paris, which indicates that she was a Cuba elite, she should have traveled to Oyos to research her subject matter. I very much doubt that the elite in Cuba ever had any real access to accurate information about this religion unless they were in fact practitioners. Unlike Ms. Cabrera, Oba Ecun is a practitioner and not a writer. What a concept! While his writing abilities may lack the flourish of Daniel Steel, the material is certainly first hand and far more interesting as well as accurate. Obviously, if you prefer to read for pleasure, this is not for you. But, for those of us who read for knowledge, Daniel Steel like Lydia Cabrera are a nuisance. The works of Oba Ecun are valuable because they were written by a practitioner of the religion with all the passion of first hand knowledge, tribal tone and brute force that represents this particular religion. It comes from the earth and the hart. Like it or not, the floral ramblings of a woman of arrested adolescence with scholarly notions of the primitive to fit prose and style can never compare to actual accounts- be it in any format. When reading material of this type, don't look for gramar, spelling and romance, instead look for substance and raw information

5-0 out of 5 stars Ita: Mythology of the Yoruba Religion
This is an excellent Book, one that everyone should read. This Book, is Interesting for Beginers and Person in thisreligion. I belive in the Author.

4-0 out of 5 stars Definetly wonderful...
I am no expert, however, having read my share of books on the Yoruba belife, this book offers insight from another view point.Whereas some other books on the subject are only written from an IFA point of view.(When others do exist.)

1-0 out of 5 stars It was OK but I did not like it too much
It was confusing. Many of the stories I grew up with are not told correctly. There are a few good things about the book like the family relations between the gods. But even some of these ties are not correct.I ask myself why this book was written and I can't find an answer.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not the best read on Yoruban patakis (myths)
This is definitely not the best read on patakis or itas.It is written in a tone which implies that its pages feature new truths concerning Orishas' (Yoruban deities) lives and psychology as portrayed by traditional mythology. This is not so. As a reader, I find that whatever is accurate is pretty much old hat and is retold in a dull way. What the author would pass on as new information I would ascribe as either longrunning points of contention between Yoruban scholars or plain old fiction. However, do not confuse this for a scholarly work for it is not.Because the Yoruban language was learned orally until relatively recent times, discrepancies in what amounts to a phoenetic spelling are expected from book to book. However, readers probably will not expect to find the flagrant grammatical errors which appear in both Spanish and English versions of the piece.Well, if you still want to read this book, prepare yourself for some incoherence due to poor basic writing!skills. With all due respect, this book was either borne of a well-meaning but modestly talented author or it is symptomatic of the trend of some in the Santeria religion to milk and misrepresent what is in reality a very beautiful belief system and life philosophy. This is most unfortunate for more authors are needed to truly convey what the religion is about and to dispell the ugly and false stereotypes that surround it.For what it offers, which is a good laugh to those knowledgable enough to see it for what it is, the book is far too expensive.I concur with the reviews I have seen of this book.Although there aren't enough books on patakis written in English, I would like to make a suggestion: Interested readers can special-order Judith Gleason's "A Recitation of Ifa--Oracle of the Yoruba" at Amazon.com.It is a book about the Yoruban divination system of Ifa and it features patakis (itas) as they play an important role in divination. ...
