5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource to understanding irrigation when installing your own system.
This is a helpful resource when planning and constructing your irrigation projects ranging from drip, microsprayers, to impulse sprinkler use. Handy formulas help determine watering needs, especially for those who have been so blessed to have water meters. I am fortunate to still have use of a well so I do not face metering cost issues, only electricity usage. Great reference for the do-it-yourself individuals and those who are hiring contractors and want to know what they are trying to tell you before the job begins. Better to have a little knowledge than none at all when dealing with contractors or vendors who will sell you anything, if you are not well-informed. Have fun and enjoy your ornamental and edible landscapes! ... Read more

Product Description

The GM debate is a war of words, which will be won as much by persuasive argument, as by action in the lab, field or supermarket. As the argument intensifies and the voices on all sides get louder, Genetically Modified Language cuts through the confusion and controversy to unpick the issues and ideology at the heart of the debate.

Examining the particular discourses of the key players in the arena, from the media to politicians, NGOs to Biotech corporations and research scientists to farmers, Guy Cook presents a critical analysis of the language of the GM debate, and how it influences policy and opinion. Each perspective has its own discourse and this can lead to misunderstanding and disagreement. Participants whose opinions are based around scientific, commercial, ethical or political concerns adopt differing styles of argument, metaphors and analogies, phrases and single words, and these can have quite different effects when they cross discoursal boundaries.

Product Description
Seeds, as small and unobtrusive as they seem, are an essential part of the life cycle of plants. In addition, they are useful for indentification of plants and, in fact, are often superior for that purpose that other parts of a plant.

That's because seeds have distinctive characteristics, tend to outlast all other plant parts, and vary little within a species--unlike other parts such as leaves.

Since weeds interfere with the growth, harvesting, and quality of crops, Linda Davis says, the ability to identify weed seeds before they are indavertently planted affords an economic advantage. Other weed-control measures--herbicides and mechanical removal of unwanted plants--are enormously costly in comparison.

Lavishly illustrated with more than 600 photographs and drawings, this handbook provides information about the seeds of 280 species of weedy plants of the Great Plains, including ones commonly found in crops, rangeland, lawns, and along roadsides.

This is the only book available that covers a large number of Great Plains plants. For each species it provides a high-quality color photograph showing minute details, a black-and-white life-size silhouette (against which actual seeds can be compared), and a full description. An easy-to-use set of finding lists facilitates identification of unknown seeds. Both scientific and common names are used throughout, and an illustrated glossary clarifies technical terms. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Every Seed ID book Benefits This Current Profession.
I agree with the two other reviews so far on this book. But almost any accurate Seed ID book is a benefit. However unlike the above reviewer this is not a re-emerging profession or art...it is a on going and strongly supported both via commercial and government employees. They are called Seed Analysts world wide. I think of them more as Seed Scientists that many really are. They not only ID seeds daily year round but they germinate and develop seed testing protocols. Every packet of commercial seeds you buy for your garden has had a sample tested by someone in this field. Look up AOSA and SCST associations on line to learn more about these great and dedicated and talented people. Politics' are ruining a lot of the best State Labs but ISU is still one of the best in Iowa. Look them up and they will be glad to help out. California State Lab in Sacramento CA also is a great resource and helpful lab when it's not their super busy time of the year. The Federal Seed Lab in Maryland is another source of information. The Federal Seed Lab in Colorado is no longer as sharing as was their past history. If you donate books to them they restrict viewers to employees only. They have formed relationships with CSU where they charge for seed ID information developed on the volunteers labor and sometimes money and still they prefer to try to sell the information. Times they are a changing. But this book covers far more than just the Great Plains as many of the Weed species covered have no boundaries....they grow from sea to shining sea. So professionals or non-professionals alike enjoy this book and we always could use more books dedicated to Seed ID. (I would have rated it 5 stars if its title didn't suggest such limitations by geography.)

5-0 out of 5 stars weed seeds of the great plains
this book has been instrumental in helping me identify six new weed seeds i previously didn't know.this book has been very helpful to me being in the grain export buisness.if you are into weeds this book is for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must, photographs of 280 seeds in color
For those of us who are either professionals, amateurs, or curious people. As greater and greater interest grows in discovering and growing native grasses and forbs - this book becomes more valuable. No key is required , and even if you don't know the species, it is possible to get a genus.

Thes book should entice readers to start their own seed identification collection. With a 10 power hand lens one can become an expertin an old but newly emerging area of interest. ... Read more

Product Description
It's surely a sign of the (high) times that marijuana is becoming increasingly visible and increasingly respectable, easily surviving every effort by the federal government and the bluenoses to suppress it. As well, ganja fans have become more discriminating, no longer willing to settle for the flavorless street bud or the insecticide-soaked leaf. Catering to this new sophistication, The Good Bud Guide offers the reader the most relevant details of the heavenly bud in a concise, easy-to-use format. Designed like a guide to fine wines, this handy book features a wide range of strains, each accompanied by an educated evaluation of its aroma, taste, and effect; high-quality glossy images; and precise growing information to help discerning enthusiasts identify the best-bred bud and perhaps even grow their own. Chapters on grow-room tips, humidity, cuttings, hash-making, and basic and high-tech paraphernalia round out the experience, making this the most comprehensive strain guide every produced. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars WOW - This book's got the lot
WOW! This book's got the lot. From the front cover to the back cover, you can't put it down. The pics are quality showing the plants at their peak, I couldn't get enough of this action. The text is very detailed for each plant and really helps when investing in a strain. The 'Info' box accompanying each strain is so neat. Chapters on lighting, humidity control, hash making and even "How to roll the perfect doob", are really helpful. All in all, I can't fault this book. I totally recommend it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Snore fest.
I was hoping for a great new coffee table book, but "Cannabible" this is NOT. Apparently Albie has a limited vocabulary. His reports are seriously boring and hard to read or follow. He supposedly spent some time in "The Dam" and thinks he's still in Europe with his metric measuring of plant heights etc. He supposedly, too, lives in San Francisco. Then why the metric measurements? There may be some or most of the blame placed at the feet of the editor. If you can possibly view this book prior to purchase, do it. Then decide if you want to waste your money. Then go buy the Cannabibles or Big Book of Buds series instead.

I have to give some credit for the photography...excellent! But I swear the close-ups and bud shots don't match the actual variety, and I think they used the same bud for close-ups multiple times. Even though the pictures are pretty, the text stinks.

At any rate....BORING. ... Read more

Get the latest sustainable agriculture practices and keep an eye on the future

Developing and Extending Sustainable Agriculture: A New Social Contract explores the challenges faced by today’s farmers and ranchers to provide practical strategies to develop a twenty-first century system of sustainable agriculture that is economically sound, environmentally compatible, and socially acceptable. This comprehensive look at the current state of farming and ranching presents leading authorities discussing concepts and approaches in sustainable agriculture such as crop rotations, integrated pest management, alternative sources of nutrients to maintain productivity, and rotational grazing systems.

If farmers look thoughtfully toward the future, alternatives are now available to help solve these problems to provide agricultural sustainability for generations to come. Developing and Extending Sustainable Agriculture: A New Social Contract provides a model for integrated research and outreach to everyone interested in sustainable development. A sensible framework of practical short-term strategies are combined with visionary long-term plans to provide viable approaches to sustain agriculture, secure our food system, and develop a more equitable society for the future.
