Excerpt: O'Hare International Airport -The airport was constructed between 1942 and 1943, as a manufacturing plant for Douglas C-54s during World War II. The site was chosen for its proximity to the city and transportation. The two million square-foot (180,000 m²) factory needed easy access to the workforce of the nation's then-second-largest city, as well as its extensive railroad infrastructure. Orchard Place was a small pre-existing community in the area and the airport was known during the war as Orchard Place Airport/Douglas Field (hence the location identifier ORD). The facility was also the site of the Army Air Force's 803 Special Depot, which stored many rare or experimental planes, including captured enemy aircraft. These historic aircraft would later be transferred to the National Air Museum, going on to form the core of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum's collection. Air Traffic Control TowersThe new FAA control tower (right, now known as the "South Tower") opened in early 1997. The best airport administration history book I've read
...P>This book does not contain his fascinating war stories, however; this is an autobiographical perspective on the management of a major airport, and therefore appeals to a fairly specific audience--airport administrators. There is some value to the average business administrator, though: General Bywater points out some of the pitfalls that any admin might face, particularly one involved in municipal or state government. He also tells, in an entertaining fashion, how he and his crew managed to get past the snags and build SLC into a first-class airport.

This book is not as gripping as Bywater's other publications, simply due to the nature of the material--to the average reader, war stories tend to be more exciting than airport management. However, those in the airline industry may find an interesting perspective within the pages of Airport Report. ... Read more

Another Disappointment
Another name change required.

Like "LAX:Los Angeles InternationalAirport", this book on ORD offers nothing more than pictures ofairlines serving this world's busiest gateway.The author might aim toportrait and showcase this busy hub by displaying a plethora of pictures ofaircrafts, unfortunately omitting all information regarding history,operation, and behind-the-scene aspects of ORD.

Don't expect a layout ofairport and its architecture.This is an airline guide.

Disappointingbook offer little beyond aircraft photos.
While the photo's are nice,the book offers little insight into the inside operations or history of ORD.Literally no coverage of the old terminals or behind the scenes glimpses.....strictly for planespotters. This econometric study covers the latent demand outlook for airport car rentals across the states, union territories and cities of India. Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across over 5,100 cities in India. For each city in question, the percent share the city is of it's state or union territory and of India as a whole is reported. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city vis-a-vis others. This statistical approach can prove very useful to distribution and/or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each state or union territory and city, latent demand estimates are created for airport car rentals. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

This report covers the top 2000 cities in over 200 countries. It does so by reporting the estimated market size (in terms of latent demand) for each major city of the world. It then ranks these cities and reports them in terms of their size as a percent of the country where they are located, their geographic region (e.g. Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, North America, Latin America), and the total world market.

In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have been occasionally asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services across cities. The purpose of the studies is to understand the density of demand within a country and the extent to which a city might be used as a point of distribution within its region. From an economic perspective, however, a city does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries. To an economist or strategic planner, a city represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another.

In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for the world's major cities for "non-airport car rentals" for the year 2009.
