5-0 out of 5 stars Objective opinion:)
A short, easy to read and most enjoyable book. Not an encyclopedia of survival knowledge, but a most entertaining account of a year in Alaska's Brooks Range.Hit the end and found myself wanting to read more, both times.Hard to go wrong with this one.Enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars One man's balanced picture of a winter in the far north!
I loved this book! It is sensitively and realistically written to encompass the beauty and unpleasantness of one winter in Alaska. Very easy reading, it will take you through a full range of emotions with ease. Adefinite reread for me!

5-0 out of 5 stars Shows how wonderful nature can be when we stop to look
Having read this book 4 times since 1990, I still find joy every time I pick it up.Whether reading it straight through or reading random entries Mr. Ramsey teaches us to appreciate the little things that make lifeworthwhile.Living in Northern Maine I can relate to a number of hisreferences about animal neighbors and how warm10 degrees can feel afterminus 20.

This book has touched me so, that I have begun to keep my ownjournal of nature and the seasons.

I cannot recommend this book highlyenough. It is full of funny, touching, fearful and even mundane moments. Some will have you laughing out loud and some will bring a tear to youreye.

If you love the natural world around us and long to get away from itall, this book is a delightful escape. ... Read more

Product Description

Bethel, Alaska -- a small community in a stark landscape where a powerful and richly textured story spins together, one voice at a time. It is the late 1960s as beaten teenaged Dove Alexie sits in prison. One day, Dove suddenly vanishes, and there is nothing in the prison records to mark his arrival or departure. Out of the tundra, four young people step forward with their stories:

Lorraine Hobbs, a precocious loner who brings meals to the prison;

Annette Weinland, the local minister's daughter, who volunteers at the prison;

Thelma Cooke and Edgar Kwagley, two Yup'ik adolescents orphaned and displaced from their native communities.

At the core of each narration is Dove -- and the mystery of his disappearance. Like planets in the solar system, these four young people travel in separate orbits with an unseen companion, Dove. Denise Gosliner Orenstein's masterpiece of intertwining voices captures the complexities of human existence with humor and insight.

"Bethel, Alska- a small community in a stark landscape where a powerful and richly textured story spins together, one voice at a time.

At the core of each narriation is Dove - and the mystery of his disaperance.
lIke planets in the solar system, these four young people travel in seperate orbits with an unseen companion,..... Dove! Denise Gsoliner Orenstein's masterpiece of interviewing voices captures the complexities of human exisitence with humor and insight."

After reading that I can tell that there are going to bealot of discription, because they way she ties the solar system into the review of the story, I know she has imagination.
So I would really want you to read this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Reminded me of 'To Kill a Mockingbird'
Though it was set in the cold muddy tundra of Alaska, 'Unseen Companion' reminded me of 'To Kill a Mockingbird'.Dove Alexie is as mysterious and haunting as Boo Radley, though he's a completely different kind of character. The reader is left with a sense of outrage at the racial injustice that takes place, and yet there is humor to lighten the darkness. The characters of Lorraine and her mother are particularly enjoyable.Though the narrators (four of them) are all teenagers, this is not just a book for teens, any more than 'To Kill a Mockingbird' is a children's book because the narrator is a child. The narrators speak in an authentic vernacular, and yet the writing is lyrical and beautiful. The images of stars and planets wheel in the background, along with the wonder of man's first step on the moon.I expect this book to become a classic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding1
This book was recommended by a friend, and I have to say I am eternally grateful to her. I couldn't put it down. Ms. Orenstein writes with compassion and understanding of the complexities which bind and separate people. And in a single paragraph I was often moved to both laughter and tears.

In addition to a compelling plot -- a young man who is jailed and then seemly disappears (the book is also a bit of a mystery story!) -- the author rights authoritatively about Alaska, making you almost believe you have visited the town of Bethel, and have wandered its street, and feel your heart tugged by the relentless poverty and isolation. More than anything, she writes of the terrible toll this takes on the children, who have no escape.

READ THIS BOOK! I hope it finds its way into many hands, and that the author receives the recognition she deserves. Barbara Johnson ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful and Realistic Story
I used this book with my 4th grade class to teach them about Alaska Native cultures and geography - and I would recommend it highly. A different reviewer was concerned about a character who suffers from alcoholism... ignore that review. Alcoholism is a serious issue andreaders get an honest glimpse of how this character's alcoholism negatively affects the lives of those around him. This is a great book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Inappropriate Reading for Young Readers
I bought this book for my 9 year old granddaughter. Thankfully I decided to read it before I gave it to her.The book has now been disgarded. There are about 5 or 6 references to a adult character who does nothing but drinks or gets drunk when he is in Nome. This is no way to instill moral values in the minds of young readers. The book should be pulled from book shelves. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Aleutian and WWIIHistory in an Easy-to-read Format
This is a story of the invasion of Attu by the Japanese during World War II.It is told about two Native children who are not in the village when it is captured, but who try to save their people, and learn to live off the land like their ancestors did. They learn to respect the old ways, and also help to save a young Japanese soldier. They learn that the soldiers aren't any different from their own people, just fighting for the "other side".I read this book to my third grade class so they could get a better feel for what has happened in the Aleutian Islands. This is a good piece of historical fiction. There is a lot of wisdom in it's pages.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Wind is Not a River
Immediately bringing us to a remote, Aleutian island during World War II, The Wind is Not a River is a powerful tale, richly textured by the environment and culture in which it is set.The story is not a simple "adventure" story, as some summaries have purported; the plot is strikingly complex.

The characters, so true to life, are struggling with the echoing words of their grandmother, as they try to escape the Japanese invasion of their village.Their physical challenges are compounded by a profound questioning of ethics. What should they do when they find an unconscious, Japanese soldier? Is their freedom more valuable than their humanity?

For teachers, this story is a fine centerpiece to an interdisciplinary unit on the tundra, providing an accurate look at our generous, sensitive, and courageous neighbors to the north.A must for any teacher serious about providing his/her students with a critical and inspiring education. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars "Fools rush in...."
I found this to be an interesting and exciting read despite the protagonist's obvious ineptitude and insufficiency for being the team's leader. She loves her animals and tries her very best, but she was not always equipped by nature physically or emotionally to guide and protect her team of dogs.To this day, I don't think that she can even comprehend that her Lead Dog "Douggie" was trying to get away from her when he ran off from his Leadresponsibilities.Several times she makes bad decisions which endanger her team and their expedition.Despite that ineptitude, I got emotionally "hooked," and I found this book to be an exciting and fascinating read.It is also wonderfully-illustrated and well-explained.The overall map of the expedition route was helpful, although it was not always complete.

5-0 out of 5 stars Riding with Pam
As I read this book, I felt like I was with Pam as she crossed Alaska. A truly well written book which gives the reader a wonderful insight into the beauty of Alaska and most of all into the human emotions of such an arduous journey. It is a book of truimph, beating all the odds!

4-0 out of 5 stars Alone Across the Artic
Excellent true story, well told with many explanations so the reader understands what is going on.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT, great story!
This is a great book that will inspire you to be a stronger, more adventursome person than you might otherwise be. I like the way the author incorporates diary entries from her expedition, and also the text inserts including helpful background information that might otherwise have bogged down the flow of the story. I bought both this (the version for adults or teens) and the companion book, Big Enough Anna, which tells the same story in a manner appropriate for young children. Both are fantastic, and I plan to give copies to friends as gifts. Way to go, Pam Flowers!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hard to put down
