4-0 out of 5 stars Good for Older Children
I bought this book so that my grandchildren, ages 4 and 5, could learn more about the alligators they see when they visit me in Florida.I had also gotten them the "hatch a pet" alligators since they had enjoyed "hatching" sea turtles and learning about them previously. This book was a bit too in depth for this age level and would have been better for children in the 7-12 age range.I had to scan through much of the information since I was interested only in alligators that inhabit my part of Florida. There was some interesting information missing-- for instance, that the temperature of the eggs during their development determine the sex of the offspring.I had hoped to share that information with them in the book but there was no mention of it. ( I had taken a short class about alligators at a wildlife center so I knew a fair bit about local alligators.) Overall, this is a very good, informative book for the older elementary age child and for one who wants to learn about all different kinds of alligators and crocodiles. I will definitely save it to us with my grandchildren as they get older. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Grumpy Garret needs to get a grip.
I disagree with the "reviewer" below who didn't enjoy Baby Alligator. (Actually, it sounds like Garret may be ready for books in the level 3 series.) Baby Alligator is typical of books in the All Aboard Reading series (level 2)--full-page, color illustrations that lure young readers to the simple text. Baby Alligator is a brief introduction to alligators and crocodiles, and the book delighted my 7-year-old daughter. She proclaimed the illustrations "very good," and said, "I sure learned a lot about alligators." We look forward to reading Clarke's next children's book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A nice book, and a good read for first-graders
As a former teacher and current homeschooling mother, I find Baby Alligator to be at the correct reading level for my first-grader, and at the same time full of facts that a child can grasp at this reading level. The illustrations are well-done and not overly cute. Minus one star for all the exclamation points, but this book brought us much pleasure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely See You Later, Baby Alligator
Ginjer Clarke's didactic, yet simple and delightful prose, combine with Neecy Twinem's beautifully detailed illustrations of Florida's lush landscape to make "Baby Alligator" an adventurous and unforgettable readfrom start to finish. Geared toward children in grades 1-3, this bookcontains many interesting facts about our often misunderstood and sometimesfeared animal friend - all told through the eyes of a baby alligator. Perhaps the final page best sums up this book: "Maybe now that you knowmore about alligators, you will not be too afraid of them. Just be verycareful." The author and illustrator teach children (and adults) to respectand like - not fear - an animal that was almost hunted to extinction andthat has been around since the time of the dinosaurs. I highly recommendthis book to adults and children alike. Even I, practically a nativeFloridian (and much older than the 1-3 grader age group), learned many newinteresting facts about alligators, with Baby Alligator as my guide. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An indispensable addition
Originally published in 1989 and out of print for several years, the Krieger Publishing Company's new reprint of zoologist Peter Pritchard's classic monograph, "The Alligator Snapping Turtle: Biology And Conservation", is an informed and informative introduction to one of nature's most impressive, dangerous, and famous of the turtle species. This new edition of "The Alligator Snapping Turtle" is enhanced with a major new section detailing the zoological progress made on the science and conservation of this species over the last seventeen years and is therefore a fully up-to-date, profusely illustrated treatise that includes the Snapping Turtle's geographic distribution, diet, reproduction cycle, natural history, exploitation and captivity, population status and trends, and so much more. 4-0 out of 5 stars We're Not in Kansas Anymore
"New Yorkis a mysterious city, and that's just above ground. Things are even stranger in the tangle of sewers under the street..."

SO begins young Mike's tale of his Oz- or Wonderland- trip down a trashcan to the underbelly of New York City. There, he meets an unusual balloon-bodied creature by the sewer, who introduces Mike to four other oddly shaped friends. They quickly ask Mike to help them with two rival alligator factions, brought from Florida to New York by tourists, and now competing for "stale bagels and muffins" and the best sleeping spots by the sewer.Fortunately, jewels and money are not as scarce as bagels, and the 330 alligators pool their money, drop their rivalry, and buy passage back to swampy Florida, courtesy of Mike's Uncle, who happens to own a shipping company.

There are a few too many coincidences, even for a fantasy, and author Jurg Federspiel never really incorporates the balloon creature's friends into the story.

Still, Petra Rappa's rich watercolors and background washes are delightful, especially in her above ground evocations of New York City.I would have preferred that the sewers looked more sewer-like--full of mysterious pipes and passageways--but this might have been too complex for the very youngest of the intended audience. Overall, "Alligator Mike" is an interesting trip that makes unseen places seem ore friendly and familiar, and young toddlers may find it fascinating. ... Read more

Product Description
Crocodiles and alligators have always been one of humankind's most feared predators. Around since the days of the dinosaurs, they are probably the source of myths about ferocious serpents and man-eating dragons. All tall tales aside, these reptiles remain fascinating creatures. Did you know that crocodiles and alligators eat their food without chewing? Or that they use the sun to regulate their body temperature? Renowned science writer Seymour Simon's accessible text, and full-color photos, provide a stellar introduction to these reptile wonders.
