Wonderfully Helpful
This book is the most helpful book I have read to date concerning Alzheimer's. With two parents afflicted with this disease, I read everything I can get my hands on hoping to find better ways to help them.This is a must read for anyone helping to care for an Alzheimer's patient.You will understand more fully what is going on in the mind of an Alzheimer's patient after reading this book.Very insightful with great practical and useful tips for daily living.I have been able to incorporate many of the suggestions into my parent's daily living situation. Does not work in the real world of Alzheimer's Disease
I sent this book back, it could encourage unproductive activity situations. Although there are some good activities mentioned in this book, most of the activities outlined either simply don't work or are, at worst, counter productive for Alzheimer's persons. The author, who appears to lack knowledge of dementia and activities (she is a nurse not a RT) should become acquainted with Reisberg's 7 Stages of Alzheimer's or Johnson and Johnson's Alzheimer's as a 'trip back in time' article (American J. of Alzheimer's Disease, April, 2000). Just because a person works at a facility which cares for demented persons does not mean she knows what she is talking about. I wonder if this person has a degree in Gerontological Nursing or Gerontology? This author ill-advises readers to use activities that aid in "reality orientation" or "24 hour reality orientation" for a person with dementia. That idea is so dated and counter-productive it is ridiculous. The requirement for 24 hour reality orientation in nursing facilities is currently being either changed or questioned by most gerontologists. For example, the trend is for changes in the 24 hour RO requirement written into the policy and procedures for dedicated dementia wings or for nursing facilies (since they are running over 60 percent dementia),where the Activity Director validates the Alzheimer's person's delusions. Why? Because RO simply doesn't work or delievers a bad message for most demented persons. Unlike depression or delirium, demented persons have lost their abilities to think, remember and reason. So instead person-centered activities are the trend, where the activity accomopanies the AD person on his or her "trip back in time" instead of imposing your reality on the different reality of the AD person. When the Alzheimer's person has time-traveled back to age 20 or 30 and she is told she has grandchildren or an 80 year old husband, the only result of this correction will be either an argument or a message to the AD person that she is dumb! In summary, reality orientation does not work for dementia persons and should be restricted to depressed or mildly confused elders only. RO was originally used for Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome men in Alabama and then became a national requirement for all nursing homes. But nursing homes house mainly demented persons now. So this outdated procedure is counter productive for demented persons. Activities focused on person-centered care are the current trend. Person-centered activities do mostly the opposite of what is suggested in this really bad book. Person-centered activities use validation instead of reality orientation and are matched with the 7 stages/sub-stages of AD persons in sink with the person's "trip back in time."

While writing my senior thesis on art therapy and Alzheimer's I was only able to find one book that embodied the subject as a whole.This book includes all the information that one could need on the subject and was written to inform and engage the reader in a way that is compelling and thoughtful.The stories of different Alzheimer's sufferers journeys in art therapy and the accompanying images gives a real life look on the positive affects of art therapy and gives the reader a compassionate view on the subject.I highly recommend this book for anyone who is studying Alzheimer's or knows someone with the disease and would like to learn more about how they can help that person by improving their quality of life through art therapy.Overall the book is written very well in an easy to read way that keeps the reader engaged, while at the same time being very informative and thorough.

Extremely useful text
This was a very useful text for me when my mother was suffering from Alzheimer's.It reads like a novel, in such clear language, and helped me understand a lot of my mother's bizarre behavior.The author's story of her struggle as a caregiver was so touching; it gave a humane side to this difficult illness.

This book touched my heart!Though I don't have a loved one with AD, I can only imagine the intense strain it put on the author. Very specific help for the caregivers
This book has seemingly all the information that you need to be a successful caregiver for a loved one with Alzheimer's.It is written in a very direct style. It addresses very specific solutions to the problems that occur as the various stages of the disease progress.I took care of my mother before I read this book and I could have used the advice here. I would not have had to reinvent the wheel, so to speak. I am very moved by this book
My mother is one of the patients featured in this book, which gave me more understanding, insight (as well as compassion) for what she and others are going through and the sort of enlightened care that Pomerado and its staff are providing. Besides the words, which have the gift of simplicity yet communicate the essence of Alzheimers, the photographs are marvelous and serve to transport you to that person and place that they are in as well as to teach you about the person being photographed with few if any words.

moving and helpful book
Alive With Alzheimer's is a moving pictorial portrayal of the lives of individuals with Alzheimer's who are living in an innovative residential setting in which the emphasis is on living rather than dying.The pictures do a wonderful job of showing the essential humanity of the victims of the illness, even those in the advanced stages.The text is insightful as well-- I read the book cover to cover twice and found it very uplifting.Definitely worthwhile, especially for those who have loved ones with dementia.

This book will change your view of Alzheimer's
I read this book this week and was impressed with how well it captured the spirit of the residents and staff at Silverado.My father has lived there for about a year--my mother did too until her death in February--and the place is truly amazing.Just like the book describes, I have had many chances to sit and talk with residents who didn't at first seem able to carry on a conversation.But with patience and love, you can find a way to enther their world.With the recent death of President Reagan,people should use this book as an opportunity to see what the world of Alzheimer's is like.When I come to Silverado, it is not with the dread so many people feel when visiting a nursing home.Instead, I come into a place filled with love and always have occasion to share a laugh, dance with a resident, or sit and enjoy an ice cream with my father.It is a wonderful place, as the book makes so clear in both pictures and text, and I hope it will encourage other facilities to change their way of dealing with residents.

Alive With Alzheimer's
This book was fantastic! A brilliantly conceived and constructed book
Witnessing my mother?s abilities and personality whither away from Alzheimer?s has been difficult. Comfort and advice from friends, family and the medical community has helped, and so has reading Brenda Avadian?s brilliantly conceived and constructed book, Finding the Joy in Alzheimer?s. Discovering what others have experienced and learned in similar circumstances-?particularly the heartfelt reflections of joy?-has enabled me to see my mother and her disease in a new, brighter light. Highly recommended.

Well, it's about time
I was so thrilled to see a collection of experiences from other people, similar to mine.My Dad suffered from Alzheimers and I felt like a freak for having reflected on the illness with a smile.For me, this horrific disease showed me a man that I never knew growing up.All of his barriers were broken down and I got to know, not only who my Dad was, but who I was.I have such a joy from knowing this that it is hard for me to be bitter about that which stole my father, for at the same time, it allowed me to know the father I never knew before.

It is stories like this that the author has compiled here.Many humorous, many touching, all showing a connection where many think none could be found.Yes, there is a time when the people we know and love so dearly are robbed from us by this devastating disease, but through the process there are many joyous times to be had.

Unfamiliar Territory
I'm an older (born 12/12/1952) Internet user, so--in spite of all of those reassuring, little, gold padlocks shown at the bottom of ordering pages at online stores--I still wasn't ready to put my main credit card or checking account information out in Cyberspace.So, I came up with a doable solution, creating an account for just this very purpose.

If purchasing this book wasn't actually my FIRST venture into the unfamiliar territory of online shopping (and I'm almost 100% sure that it was), it came pretty close.

Venturing out into this unfamiliar territory has had more positives than negatives for me--but there's that unfamiliar territory that is among the worst nightmares of both patients and caregivers:dealing with Alzheimer's Disease.

I had been reading the online letters that Debbie Center had been writing to a mother who would never again have the comprehension to read them--so, these letters were more for Debbie than her mother.And more for helping others who might read those letters to cope should something like this happen in their families.

One day, in an IM conversation, Debbie shared her sadness with me that her mother was rapidly going downhill, and she felt helpless to stop it from happening--yet, she also had the great news that she would have a part in this book.

And that's the thread running through this book:the moments of joy found within the Alzheimer's experience.

The people who have contributed to this book are people who mourn the slipping away of those people--generally, parents and spouses--who were once so vibrant and alert.

Yet, these same people have learned to find joy and comfort in some of the simple things of life, such as unexpected smiles, words, and laughter from their loved ones.

In one case, a family--who had gotten out of contact due to distance and schedules--began a tradition of having annual family reunions due to wanting to get everybody together while the matriarch of the family could still recognize and enjoy them.

Open this book and share the lives of those in this difficult and unfamiliar territory--and share those special moments of joy that make it all worthwhile!!!

Excellent Resource!
Wow-Carol has written a fantastic resource, very comprehensive, on caregiving and Alzheimer's Disease! I wish it had been available for me when I was navigating the complicated maze of eldercare for my parents-both with the beginning of Alzheimer's, but I didn't know it yet. Knowledge is power-don't get caught unprepared. This book can save you a lot of time, money and a fortune in Kleenex. If you have aging loved ones who are having memory problems, or any odd behaviors that you find yourself questioning--here's your roadmap and compass!

Brenda Avadian, the author, also shares some of her personal experiences and insights at the beginning of each section. This book captures the true essence and journey of caregiving.
