5-0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable and accurate biography of this fascinating lady
I was fortunate to be one of the readers for this book before it was published. I found it to be very good and accurate. Maybe as the review above states every detail of Dolley's complex life is not examined but thenagain this is a book geared for young adults and not meant to be acomprehensive biography.

4-0 out of 5 stars Martha Washington The First Lady
I read Martha Washington by Jean Brown Wagoner.I liked the book a lot.I liked it because Martha said what she felt, and she was always curious. It reminded me of my grandmother, she says what she feels and she is very curious.
The book was mostly about Martha's childhood background and then "jumped" up to where she was older, there was nothing about her teenaged years. Her nickname was Patsy.Patsy had some siblings and many cousins. She got a pony and was the fastest racer that anyone knew.
When she got older one of her "head" butlers, Mammy Tuck thought she was so pretty and that was true. She had met a guy named Mr. Custis, married him, they had four children together and two died along with Mr. Custis.Patsy was so miserable for a while but she kept the farm going.
A while later she met Mr. George Washington, they got married.George had to go to war and Patsy went with him to his camp so she could help men, she did many things, knitted things for them for warmth, she made them food so they could have energy, and she bandaged them up.She lost her two other children in the war.
The war ended and the 13 colonies became the whole United States. They voted to elect George Washington to be President.Patsy and Washington lived happily ever after.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Book on Martha Washington for young readers
Martha Washington was a loving mother and a caring person. She supported her husband, George Washington, and spent the winters with him at ValleyForge helping the soldiers in need. This book presents Martha Washington as a caring and supportive human being. The text is simple and straight forward. The book also includes interesting photographs and side highlights of things that happened during the revolution and that time period.Martha is depicted as real life character, who had to come up with a dinner for guests after the dog ran away with the ham, and as a teenager, once rode her horse up the front steps of a relatives home. The book makes the historical person come alive. ... Product Description
Based on personal papers and original documents
From Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barbara Bush to Martha Washington, here are biographical sketches of all the women who have served as First Lady. Based on personal papers and original documents, and written by leading historians and political scientists, these well-researched essays offer the latest insights about presidential wives. Each entry is a balanced, objective assesment of the historical contributions that each First Lady made to history and to the role, and how she responded to changes in the nation's highest office itself and in the evolving social demands on women.

The subjects of popular attention and controversy
These essays reveal the degree to which First Ladies since Martha Washington have been the subject of popular attention and controversy andexamine how they coped with the demands of fame. Moreover, the essays assess each woman's place in defining and developing the institution of First Lady. They provide a selection of the First Lady's own writings, contemporary articles by family and friends, biographical studies of both her general surveys. An obituary is included for deceased First Ladies. Bibliographies indicuate where personal papers and other manuscript sources can be found. The book also cites the location of primary sources, identifies the best biographies, and offers topics for further research. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Portraits
I found this book to be fascinating. It provides a close look at First Ladies, something one often doesn't find as historical books tend to focus on the presidents. Not only do you get a review of their lives as First Ladies, but details on their lives before and after their time in the White House. The only distractions are some editing errors and an often clear subjective positive view of the First Lady in question...thus the book is not entirely written from a neutral historical point of view.

4-0 out of 5 stars if you like to read fact based stories about movie stars
The book Dorothy Dandrige is a very deep and interesting story about a young woman who stugggles all through movie her career. The book is very well written and is real in depth about her life. I think that the author realy did a good job writting this book, althogh i wish he would have go more indepth about her life before she was a movie star. I recommed this book to anyone who knows what it is like to struggle in life and did what it takes to over come the struggle. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Abigail Adams: First Lady and Patriot
I wrote this book, and it is NOT for ages 9-12. It's a young adult book, for ages 12 and up. Some younger kids might be able to read it, but the average nine-year-old won't be able to. I've tried to contact you and my publisher has told you, but since you won't listen, I figure I'll tell the customers directly.

This is a great book!!!!Not only is Michelle Obama one of the most intelligent and clever women of our time - but she's our Presidents wife! The First Lady! What a powerhouse in the White House....

Read her words, she is an inspiration and a visionary leader in her own right....she tells it like it is...I was so impressed...if you read this book you'll not only learn about Michelle, but you'll feel better about tomorrow.

This book is an inspiration, as is she.Well recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great read for anyone who wants to know more about Michelle
I am very excited about our new First Lady. This is a great read for anyone who wants to know more about Michelle Obama. This book contains her great speeches and additional up to date biographic content.
I was thrilled to read about Michelle and her opinions.

This book, "Michelle Obama - Our First Lady" is more complete and more up to date as the previous edition Michelle Obama: In Her Own Words.

She can be funny and sharp-tongued, warm and blunt, empathic and demanding. She grew up on the south side of Chicago, the daughter of a city worker and a stay-at-home mom in a neighborhood rocked by white flight. She was admitted to Princeton amid an angry debate about affirmative action and went on to Harvard Law School, where she was more comfortable doing pro-bono work for the poor than gunning for awards with the rest of her peers. She became a corporate lawyer, then left to train community leaders and is modern in her tastes... ... Read more

Product Description
With this revelatory and painstakingly researched book, Martha Washington, the invisible woman of American history, at last gets the biography she deserves. In place of the domestic frump of popular imagination, Patricia Brady resurrects the wealthy, attractive, and vivacious young widow who captivated the youthful George Washington. Here are the able landowner, the indomitable patriot (who faithfully joined her husband each winter at Valley Forge), and the shrewd diplomat and emotional mainstay. And even as it brings Martha Washington into sharper and more accurate focus, this sterling life sheds light on her marriage, her society, and the precedents she established for future First Ladies. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and easy to read
Insightful book! Finally shows Martha Washington as her own person other than George's wife. Interesting details!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good read, well written.
It was a good read - well written. It's about a beautiful, elegant young woman who marries George Washington. It's a good combination of social history and biography.

2-0 out of 5 stars The accounting for her resistence to her husband's attitude about freeing the slaves
The book is written in context of some of our shallowest values in American culture regarding how women appear and not nearly enough about how they influence the development of the national concscience.Mrs. Adams was more admirable, whereas Mrs. Washington was just the first. She cared for her husband well but seemed not to share much of the sensibilities of the issues of the time. Her resistence to his desire to free the slaves after his death, as he had grown to believe was appropriate, was a case in point of the smallness of her viewpoint. The fact that she felt her life threathen after his death was the impetus for changing her mind, which brings into question how she had related to them(the slaves) over the years. She was the first woman of stature in the country to demonstrate how other women of different races were exploited and oppressed to preserve her way of life.

I prefer homages to Eleanor Rosevelt as examples to teach young girls values of consequence. I am surprised that we would want to elevate one more "southern belle" who just wanted to dressup and look pretty while the servants were living in hell.We already have Scarlet O'hara.

The author's recreation of her youthful image feels so anti-feminist since it seems to attach too much value to how she looked rather than how she acted. Such superficiality.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Readable
I thought this book was pretty well written. The author did a nice job telling the story of not only Martha but the Washington family without getting bogged down by too many details.I also learned a lot about day to day colonial life. The reason I give it 4 stars is because the author let her dislike of Thomas Jefferson show through. She mentioned that Jefferson didn't really think much of Martha but then later in the book took one paragragh and really threw Jefferson 'under the bus' so to speak.I found the paragraph out of charactor for the whole book and wondered why the editor kept it in.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and Entertaining
This look at the life of Martha Washington was very interesting. She really seems to be a woman lost to history by her legendary husband's very large shadow but this book gives a look at her strength and intelligence and also at the time in which they lived.A must read for any woman with an interest in American History. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Read for History Course
This book is well written, excellently cited, and easy to follow even if you aren't interested in history. It was required for my husband's class but I read it out of curiousity. The real issue lies within the author's need to cite almost entire pages of other articles, books, etc. I really don't feel it made a difference in the overall presence.
