1st Grader Digs History!
My first grader & I are really enjoying "History Pockets, Native American".We plan to use more "History Pockets"!!! Great fun & educational!!!

Lots of coloring, some careless inaccuracies
I think this is best for a portfolio and art. It's not bad but...twice in the Seminole section it referred to the chickees (Seminole Indian huts) being built with a platform "3 feet (9 meters)" off the ground. Three feet does not equal nine meters. In the glossary, it also confused the children by giving an inaccurate definition for hominy that was actually a description of another dish mentioned in the text, a softer, pudding like-dish. Since there was a recipe for hominy, this is really confusing to the students. Also, it is tagged as being for first to third grade but the reading level is fourth to sixth. It would be better to omit the grade level marking altogether IMO.

History Pockets
My daughter loves using the History Pockets.We used the History Pockets: Ancient Civilizations, Grades 1-3 last year and it made learning a lot of fun.One thing that I learned last year was to make copies and gather materials the night before so that our activity went smoothly.These are great tools for all students.

It was okay
While the History Pocket books are great for making a book, they are a little boring by themselves. There is too much coloring and not enough learning. We have learned more by reading library books, the encyclopedia, watching an educational show, or talking about the subjects.

When we purchased these, I liked the idea. But, after wasting a lot of our homeschool day with the children coloring (by day 3, coloring had turned into scribbles) I decided to use these as supplemental activities. We read and do art projects. We talk about the subjects.

My kids liked this HP the best, and actually did quite a few of the activities from it. I found it is best used at the end of the day, so if they spend a lot of time on it, it's okay.

We have several of the HP products. Now, we let the kids chose which ones looked "fun", and skip the rest.

While it is nice to have a book to look at afterwards, I feel they do not serve a great purpose. (And they are a waste of printer paper and ink.) They are nice if you need a "work sample" for school, but I feel they are just "busy work". History can be learned in much more interesting ways.

HPs are always fun and full of quality activities that my boys enjoy
I really like the History Pockets series - they're wonderful. And, this book is quite good and full of a variety of age appropriate activities that my boys really enjoyed.However, I question how some of the tribes were selected; specifically, the Seminoles of the Southeast Region.While the HP units can stand alone quite well as a unit study, I like to complement them with additional information and activities for my boys.I found it particularly difficult to find any complementary information/activities for the Seminoles.I think the Cherokee tribe would have been a much better choice.The same holds true for the Maidu tribe of the Californias - very limited information available to supplement. Also, I wish that this book had included tribes for the Great Basin and the Sub-Arctic regions.To include these two areas would make this unit completely comprehensive and thorough.Nonetheless, it is a good resource to have and follow as part of an early elementary study on Native Americans. ... The book itself, the information it provides and the selection of songs are all fine, it's a good, well-rounded book with great illustrations suitable for teaching.I did find it highly ironic, however, that a book purporting to teach American history gets the date and place of the first permanent English colony in North America wrong -- it wasn't Plymouth in 1620, it was Jamestown in 1607.Furthermore, there were numerous French, Dutch and Spanish colonies and outposts all up and down the Atlantic coast of what would become the United States well in advance of the Puritans. In fact, the first Dutch colony in the new world was founded near Albany, NY, five years before Plymouth. ... Read more

These are very helpful!
My daughters, ages 8 and 10, love these! They have helped us supplement our Abeka History and make it more interesting. Both my daughters are very creative so these Pockets are perfect! Evan-Moor knows what they are doing.

Liked it!
I teach 5th grade and used the activities in this book to supplement the text and online scavenger hunts that we did as a group.What I like about the activities in this book is that they work for a wide range of skill levels.The gifted students in the class were having as much fun with the activities as the students who are severely impaired.All of the students were placed into groups and they were all able to do the activities with little help outside their groups.There are so many different activities in the book it was impossible to use them all, so it's important to select the things that look appropriate for your group of learners.Parents liked what they saw when we were finished, and the students had a very nice finished product.

Just OK
I teach 5th grade and I used this last fall.You definitely would be lacking if this was the only thing you did for an explorers unit.I did not use it "pocket" style for that reason, but did use some of the information and activities to supplement my unit.The information about the explorers is good, but some of the activities are a little silly and don't really support their learning well.

Sadly Disappointed
I thought these History Pockets would compliment our homeschool well.I was wrong.They are good for bursts of information, but we found them to be busy work, dull and redundant to our learning.

cut and paste
the activities contain good info and provide all needed info to the teacher for prep and presentation.My one reservation is that the activities are almost exclusively cut, paste and color.However, the information provided is interesting and helps kids get a grasp of the reality of history not just the names and dates.I don't really think this reaches up to the 6th grade level though.4th and 5th graders should love it!

Great hands-on supplement for history
My fifth grader loves colonial American and Revolutionary war history.with all the reading she has been doing on the subject, I found this a nice way to provide some projects for a learning portfolio.For someone homeschooling with a curriculum such as Sonlight that focuses a lot on books, this can add some crafts and color to the program.Don't expect that this book will be all you need to cover the time period, it doesn't replace a curriculum or good library books, but it is a great complement for a history program.

History Pocket Review
This product has been a great edition to our My Father's World History Program. We are also so using the Life in Plymouth Colony Grades 1-3 History Pockets. We also added the North American Explorers History Pockets as well and have really enjoyed it.I would recommend these products to anyone who enjoys hands on visual projects for their kids to work on.

Just the Facts!
