More educational than you might want
This is a terrific comprehensive collection, a great place to find all the standard poets and poems about American history (up to 1922) all in one place, along with hundreds of less-known gems. You will learn more about battles in the War of 1812 here than you ever learned in high school! There is also a surprisingly long section on the assassination of President Garfield, who we, today, barely remember.

Unfortunately, this collection is marred in places by unfortunate racial attitudes that, considering the publication date, probably should not have taken me by surprise.

Here is the introduction to a poem in the section on Reconstruction (page 561):
"The South's condition meanwhile was pitiful indeed. Negroes, led by 'carpet-baggers' from the North, secured the ascendancy in state government. Millions of dollars were wasted or stolen, and it looked for a time as though a great section of the country was doomed to negro domination."

The poem after that is called "Ku-Klux." The introduction to the poem describes the KKK as "famous," and using "sure and swift administration of punishment -- just and unjust." The poem itself is a call to arms, with the refrain, "Yet arm and mount! and mask and ride!" It briefly describes a lynching as a noble thing. My husband and I felt a little queasy after I read it to him.

I have not read the entire book, but I think that 95% of the problem is just on those two pages. Do note that the section on the Conquest of the Plains is another likely source of problems that I have not thoroughly perused. The introduction to "After the Comanches" acknowledges Comanche grievances, but then says, "Driven to frenzy, at last, tribe after tribe of savages took up arms, and started on a career of murder and rapine."

I suppose it is educational, if approached with eyes open, to see just how embedded and taken-for-granted ugly racism has been in this country.

The book has also been republished by Bob Jones University Press as "American History in Verse," for use in homeschools. I do not know if the ugly parts have been revised.

Fullof old friends
This is a nice book of poetry. I've been searching for a poem for over 20 years that I read in high school andI found it in this book with a little help from Google book search. To be expected , these poems are related to a specific topic - American History, but there are a lot of good poems in this book and probably some that you read or recited in your high school English class, including one of my favorites "On Fort Sumter". ...
