In politics and in history, a colony is a territory underthe immediate political control of a state. For colonies inantiquity, city-states would often found their owncolonies. Some colonies were historically countries, whileothers were territories without definite statehood fromtheir inception. The metropolitan state is the state thatowns the colony. In Ancient Greece, the city that owned acolony was called the metropolis within its politicalorganization. Mother country is a reference to themetropolitan state from the point of view of citizens wholive in its colony. There is a United Nations list of Non- Self-Governing Territories. A colony is mostly ruled byanother state or can be run independently. Unlike a puppetstate or satellite state, a colony has no independentinternational representation, and its top-leveladministration is under direct control of the metropolitanstate.
