3 1/2*Dated Material, But Still Good
This is a very good, albeit fairly old (1983) look at amusement parks, and, especially, the mechanics, painters, maintenance staff, gardeners, cooks, costume designers, and security personnel who work there. The last section "Working There," briefly talks about teen and professional employment.

There isn't very much on the art and architecture of rides; the book is written at a more macro level describing the staff needed to run a park.Additionally, most featured parks are in California, and they are described fairly briefly.Still, the text is well written, there are some fascinating facts (e.g., two 450-horsepower pumps get water speeds up to 30 miles an hour at California's "Magic Mountain"), and some nice color and black and white photos.I think it may be best as a book to read to youngsters; those who can read may want something a little more technical and up-to-date. ... Although I completely agree with the previous review, I would like to emphasize how well this book is written. This book is part of Twayne's Evolution of American Business Series and, as such, does not hide raw data from the reader. However, one can easily ignore the tables and skip a few paragraphs in each chapter and still feel very satisfied with the book.

I orginially purchased the book to learn the history of the Walt Disney World Resort. What I gained was a thorough review of the amusement park history from the 12th century Bartholomew Fair to Universal Studios Florida in 1990 (the book was published in 1991). From trolley parks to Coney Island, from Disneyland to Cedar Point, Ms. Adams covers all the bases.

A wonderful book!

Academic study, not lighthearted or fun but excellent
This is a wonderfully researched, thoughtful treatise on the amusement park industry. It is not for those who want a pictorial history, or a romp with colorful characters like George Tilyou. Tilyou is here, but he issurrounded by demographic charts showing the age breakdown of the New YorkCity population during Coney Island's history. There is a great deal offinancial information, as well, such as consumer spending on 23recreational products or services for the years 1909-1923. You get theidea--it is an academic book (but there are some photos, mainlyhistorical).

But as such, it's awesome. There is probably no other booklike it. Many academic books are not only dry, they are poorly written, butthis one is neither. Here is a sample (since this is the first review andthere is little here about the book):

"The major historian of theamusement industry, William F. Mangels, author of "The OutdoorAmusement Industry from Earliest Times to the Present" (1952) washimself a carousel manufacturer. In 1907 Mangels patented a device thatimparted an improved, smooth, galloping motion to the horses and in timebecame common on all carousels. He and his carver, Marcus Charles Illions,produced finely carved carousels, including the Feltman merry-go-round atConey Island. This man, who in 1912 also created the first wave machine forthe swimming pool at Palisades Park, New Jersey, preserved the heritage ofthe amusement industry in America by organizing and developing the AmericanMuseum of Public Recreation."

Rachel Hawthorne Always Hooks Me In

.. to read books like this one.This was my first Rachel Hawthorne novel to read and I loved it.I usually do not enjoy reading cheesy, mushy love stories, but this wasn't at all what I expected.As there were many mushy moments, there were also a lot of times when the story got intense or made me want to read faster to see what would happen.I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I definitely recommend it to anyone who is in the mood for a quick, feel good novel that will make you find yourself 'cheesin' really big as you close the last page.(:

In Thrill Ride, a girl goes away to work at an amusement park during the summer to get away from the craziness of her sister's wedding plans. She gets stuck working in the worst place, the gift shop. She's having problems with her boyfriend back home and is in the middle of wedding problems between her sister and mother. Nothing seems to be going right for her until one thing happens and everything changes.This book is a good quick read; I finished it in a day. This book is mostly for teen girls but a guy could read it if he wanted too. I really liked this book. It shows real problems that happen to everyday girls and shows that no one's life is perfect. So if you are looking for a good book to just lie back, relax, and read, this is your perfect book!

Love the story...
I absolutely loved this book, especially since I have spent a summer working and living at an amusement park on the shores of Lake Erie, lol. The park has a lot of similarities to Cedar Point in Sandusky although there are a lot of differences. Part of the fun for me was reading a story about a girl who was the same age as me at the time doing something quite similar, leaving home, living at the park. I only wish some things were a bit more like the book, such as, having such nice housing when the reality is that they are a bit more like the "slums" her boyfriend thought she was living in, lol, oh well, still an amazing experience.

Thrill Read
Megan (Dallas, TX) has applied for a job in an amusement park -Thrill Ride!- for the whole summer. Great graphic design
I bought this because of it's unique ticket graphics inside.The illustrations are so so, but it's a cute premise.

Childhood Treasure
This story book is incredible.The illustrations have the feel of a joyful 1920's - a delight to the eyes.The hidden duck on each "ride" is fun to search out.The little ticket reading is just enough -- a lull before the hunt for the duck!

Dizzyland Dream Park: Fun for All!
Somewhat reminiscent of Disney's Pinocchio amusement park (without the scary parts), Jules Verne, and the magical images suggested by "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds,"Mark Rogalski reinvents the alphabet book in his spectacularly creative "Ticket to Ride: An Alphabetic Amusement."

Rogalski, in fantastic (in both sense of the word) dreams of color and mechanics, depicts 26 imaginary amusement park rides, ordered from A to Z by ride name. These names (for example, "Flight of the Flounder," "Hippo Hop," "The Jellyfish Jump." "Steamy the Snail," all the way to "Zebra Zeppelin") are the only alphabet references in the book.

"Alligator in the Air" for example, is a multi-swing contraption, with big-toothed, blank-eyes gators seating riders beneath a pagoda-like covering. Four pages later, there's the enormous "Elephant Ed," a Macy's Parade of a ride, dwarfing the surrounding park. Opposite each picture, a corresponding rhyme is written on the "ticket" to each ride:

"Elephant Ed has a fez on his head,
And a castle upon his back,
Eighty feet high, he fills most of the sky!
He's so big that one cannot keep track!"

A hundred years old, or so we are told,
What mysteries he must hide.
Epic is epic! As wide as your eyes!
This ticket will get you inside!

Every ride is an eye-opening invitation for both youngsters and adults, some more imaginative than others, all beautifully drawn and colored. Together they constitute a cotton candy confection of fancy and fantasy. Rogalski wisely leaves enough room for the reader's own imagination (e.g., "Where would someone sit?" "How do you think it moves?"), so there's an excellent opportunity for reader/audience interaction. He also varies the color schemes, as well as the format and content of the clever, well-written rhymes on each ride's ticket.

There's a big finish too: A two-page map showing all of "Dizzyland Dream Park," showing the park's layout and including miniatures of the rides we're just seen up-close. As if that weren't enough, Rogalski invites us to take another look at each of the 26 pictures, each has a hidden number (1 through 26), and "a duck with lots of tricks." A final ticket promises "a free return visit."

I would have liked an even larger-sized book, perhaps because each picture would make a magnificent framed poster. This is just a wondrous work that can be enjoyed solely for the illustrations, or paired with Rogalski's ticket prose. A conceptual tour de force, and a pictorial triumph!

Excellent Kids Book
Tickets to Ride is a wonderful book for kids.The illustrations are gorgeous and really get a kids attention.Not only does this book help kids learn their ABCs, but it helps with counting and it's a search and find.Three activities all in one.I've given this book to two of my friends kids and they absolutely love them.It's their favorite book.

Unique
I bought this book for my three year old because we were both captivated by its pictures and its fanciful rhymes. It is visually arresting, with allusions to japenese art, and Northern Renaissance art, and more that I'm sure I'm not catching on to. It is a little dark (skeletons, some creepy looking critters), but don't underestimate what children can process. Still, my son actually got upset that he cannot ride these rides; they do look fun (far from the Dumbo Ride, probably could not get insured). No, it is not what you want for teaching the alphabet, or counting but it is unique and gives children something a little less ordinary. We have had this book for a year now and he still goes and pulls it out of his bookcase for us to read to him at least once a week. ... Read more

Wonderful!
I have been visiting Wildwood, NJ since I was young, and now we visit annually with our extended family. Last year, we had 17 family members with us!
