5-0 out of 5 stars Best kept secrets
This is one of the best anesthesia references to have, if you're an anesthesiology resident.I used this text as my main study source, and was able to get passing score equivalents on the ITE all throughout training, and also passed written boards predominantly using this text.Gives a great overview about all tested anesthesia subjects. It's also portable enough to carry into the OR.I owe passing written boards to Secrets.

3-0 out of 5 stars Anesthesia Secrets
This is a pretty decent review book for some of the most common things you will see on Anesthesia rotations. It's not meant to be a reference book, so it's tough to find specific topics sometimes. It gives you a pretty good overview of different areas in anesthesia. I think it's a much better book then blueprints, but it's a lot more detailed so it takes a while to read the whole book.

5-0 out of 5 stars need-to-know facts
compact and succinct without extraneous verbage. not much explanation of concepts will be found here, just the facts and pearls of this science. great for board exam preparation!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best in OR reading I have found
This is the best in OR reading I have found. I simply cannot focus on a large text or journal articles during a case. I enjoy reading the one paragraph Q&A style. I feel I extract a learning point per question without ignoring my surroundings. Yes, many of the concepts are simple and fit for medical students. But there are numerous, numerous sections that delve into more advanced concepts that are worth reviewing routinely. In fact, one of my attendings is picking up a copy just for 'quick review'; both for themself and to better pimp residents and students on the 'hardcore basics'.

Would buy again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Secrets 3E
I just received this book and I recommend it even if you aren't interested in anesthesia, it references quite a bit to physiology and pharmacology which for me since step I is long forgotten.. so it is a nice refresher and sure to cover easily a few questions that won't just show up on rounds but on the boards..
here is a sample of the topics covered:

I. BASICS OF PATIENT MANAGEMENT
1 AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM
2 RESPIRATORY AND PULMONARY PHYSIOLOGY
3 BLOOD GAS AND ACID-BASE ANALYSIS
4 FLUIDS AND VOLUME REGULATION AND DISTURBANCES (for me acid base/ fluids and electrolytes) have been somewhat of an Achilles, so glad it is covered here..
5 ELECTROLYTES
6 TRANSFUSION THERAPY
7 COAGULATION
8 AIRWAY MANAGEMENT
9 PULMONARY FUNCTION TESTING
10 VOLATILE ANESTHETICS

anyhow the list is quite lengthy. with this book you'll also be given a code to student consult, so if you are at home with your laptop you can just do your studying there... I haven't gotten past respiratory and pulmonary physiology but this book is extremely well written and I look forward to finishing it.. I am also supplementing it with Anesthesia unplugged, which is really quite a humorous addition...

2-0 out of 5 stars Same as old edition
The 4th edition is essentially the same as the old edition, which can be had at significantly cheaper rates.

Pros: Divided by subject to focus on particular areas. Index is helpful. Question format is a nice change from other review forms.

Cons: There are quite a few errors that detract from quickly going through subjects and make explanations confusing. Many of the questions are low yield, just fact associations for memorization, rather than clinical situations promoting critical thought in a multistep process (as the exam does). Also, many of the questions are just absurdly difficult with explanations that leave one scratching their head regarding if there is anything to be learned from it that can be applied to clinical practice(but this is not too dissimilar from the actual ITE/ABA exam as I recall). Online feature is ho-hum at best. Find another review book if you can.

Personally, I would not buy this version again. There are better options out there for review.

4-0 out of 5 stars edition is old
I'm a little disappointed how old the edition is.Apparently in Oct. 2009 a new edition is coming out.The picture that is shown on Amazon is NOT for the old edition so it is misleading. If I had seen the picture of the book I actually received I would have realized it is an edition I had already used years and years ago.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth the money
This book does an excellent job of testing all relevant concepts. Some of the questions are artificially difficult and a little on the difficult side, but if you learn the answers your boards will be a success.I just finished the book for the second time and noticed a marked difference in my ability to remember the concepts that i had seen before.i definitely recommend this question book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Review Book
It's just as good as learning from the authors in person.Comprehensive with nice discussion of answers, sectioned by system, and a good format to review topipcs.

5-0 out of 5 stars 2 Thumbs up
I had the pleasure of working with Brian Hall for a couple of years and he is a fantastic educator and is always quizzing himself and others to keep everybody sharp.I used this book for my written board review and found it to be very helpful. The residents nearly universally used this review at the Mayo Clinic and seemed to feel that it was of substantial help in their preparation. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Pocket Anesthesia

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Comprehensive Reference... A Must Have
I kept on seeing students, residents, CRNAs and even attendings in the department using this book to prepare for cases and for the boards. So I ordered a copy for myself and am extremely pleased. While the book looks small it is complete and comprehensive, including both basic and advanced topics. The six-ring binder fits nicely in the pocket of my lab coat or I can choose to just carry a few of the loose-leaf pages around with me.There is a LOT of information crammed into this little book. It's generously illustrated with many relevant lists, tables, and algorithms, which condenses a ton of information.A very, very useful resource in deed, I recommend it for everyone studying or practicing Anesthesiology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Efficient
Simply put- Ehrenfeld & Urman's Pocket Anesthesiology is efficient.Only the most useful information for preparing a pre-op, intra-operative, and post-op plan has been included.Much information has been densely packed and has been organized in a way that whatever you're looking for is at your fingertips in seconds. The figures are thoughtful and include everything you need, nothing more. For a book it is surprisingly current with the most recent scholarship.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's okay
This book is a decent resource.I was expecting much more detail in regards to management of some of the more unusual diseases, such as multiple myeloma, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, etc.If reading one of the bigger books, this one seems unnecessary, although it may be nice for a quick review later. For now it'll sit on my bookshelf...

5-0 out of 5 stars awesome pediatric resource!!!
This book is a great resource for doing pediatrics!! I love the exact dosing according to weight. A must have!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Resource!
This is one of the most practical, user-friendly resources available for CRNAs/SRNAs in the OR.It has been a life-saver for me as an SRNA when Pediatric cases were added to my room unexpectantly. It not only provides you with accurate, weight-based doses for the majority of medications you would give a pediatric patient, but it also gives you the calculated milliters for the drugs (check concentrations). Many CRNAs I have worked with have purchased this valuable resource after utilizing my copy.Add this to your OR bag...you will not be disappointed!

5-0 out of 5 stars Most comprehensive Pediatric Anesthesia pocket guide!
I believe that this is the most comprehensive, practical, concise pediatric pocket reference. I carry this valuable tool with me everyday of clinical experience. The book has info about all the possible drugs used in pediatric population, weight based dosages down to 250gm premie baby. I do wish that the font was a little larger for a better view. This pediatric pocket is an excellent pocket reference.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pediatric anesthesia and Emergency Drug Guide
Good info organized by child's age. It would be more convenient to have the two pages per each age placed so they face each other. That way you could leave the book open without flipping back and forth between pages. Also, the pages aren't laminated so you have to be careful about spills since this is the kind of book you bring into the OR with you and leave on top of your anesthesia cart during your pediatric cases.

5-0 out of 5 stars Heads Up!!!!
Heads up!! You need to have this pediatric guide in your possession when you're out battling the peds world. This is a fantastic, "flip-to-the-page" guide that instantly gives you EVERYTHING you want based on the peds weight. If I hear that my next case is a kid, I immediately pull out THIS guide. *****5 STARS to the author of this pocket manual!!

Product Description
The accreditation process for anesthesia in the United States is considered one of the most difficult in all medical specialties, with residents required to pass both an oral and written exam to gain certification. This book is specially designed for the American Board of Anesthesiology Oral Examination. The evidence-based approach is presented in a concise outline-oriented format, with an emphasis on test results and visual images. The Knockout Treatment Plan demonstrates the correct method of managing the case to the satisfaction of the examiners, while the Technical Knockout sections give additional tips for successfully passing the examination. The straightforward format of this book makes it suitable not only as an oral review book but also as an introduction to anesthesia rotations for medical students, medical interns, and nurse anesthetist students; furthermore, the book can be used as a technical study guide for anesthesia residents. More than 100 topics in this book have already been board-review tested by residents. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars pretty thorough approach
Good book for cardiology, useful to have.Pretty thorough.Liked it. Could use more on TEE and links to TEE but again, a good book to have for cardiac anesthesia.

2-0 out of 5 stars good but unreadable
Great book, a lot of information, but i'm sorry, unreadable. The presentation is like the old 80's book. No color, no space, that's pitty. That's why I bought the Kaplan's one, the short one (essentials of cardiac anesthesia) which is much more user friendly an fully colored. I recommend the last one if you want to buy a book about cardiac anesthesia, ideal for clinicians. Don't waist your time, go to the essentials without missing anything!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good book !

It is a necessary text for anyone practicing cardiac anesthesia.
I recommend it!

It contains clear and updated knowledge in the field of daily practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cardiac Anesthesia
Great book, easy format, concise information.I would reccomend it to everyone who may provide cardiac anesthesia.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Book for Cardiac Anesthesia Practitioner
During our clinical practice in a teaching hospital in Istanbul, Turkey; I found the previous editions of this book very useful. I ordered my first book from [...] to receive the 2008 edition in January 2008. I have done a correct decision. This is an up-to-date, valuable practical book for Cardiac Anesthesiologist; as well as for residents who recently start to learn Cardiac Anesthesia. The tables provide excellent documentation for the use of different cardiac drugs and also some tables serve to differentiate different situations that has to be dealt in complex heart surgical operations. I would like to thank very much to the Editors for providing such a wonderful book to Anesthesia Society all over the world. Our goal is to translate it to Turkish in a short period of time. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Must-Have Companion for Barash's Clinical Anesthesia
Anybody familiar with the Barash's Clinical Anesthesia knows that it is probably the single book with the most information on all aspects of anesthesia in your library. You know that oftentimes there is just too much information to quickly obtain the need-to-know big-picture information. That is where this handbook comes in.

It succinctly offers a summary of the most important information in Barash. The Handbook makes heavy use of tables and charts (many, but not all, of them directly from Barash). I am using the Handbook as a study guide and quick reference, and if any questions remain, I go to Barash. This is very convenient to do as the chapter numbers between the two resources correlate perfectly.

In my opinion, if your school (or your practice) involves the use of Barash's Clinical Anesthesia, purchasing this handbook should be a no-brainer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Too bulky for a pocket guide!
Great book but I wanted a true handbook that I could carry in clinicals, way to big to be carrying around!

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Handbook
This is a really nice handbook. It is great to have in a lab coat pocket or bag so that you don't get stuck somewhere with nothing to read.Obviously, this is not a reference text.Easy to read and loaded with high yield information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly what was ordered
Book came in perfect condition. Exactly as described. Quick shipment. Would buy from this seller again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutelly fantastic!
I bought baby Barash and I loved it. It is the best first book you can have, and you can always bring it with you and have it ready. It is easy to find what you need. 5-0 out of 5 stars Useful questions with good rationale
This Barash version of test questions is probably among the more useful i have yet found (but i have only explored two so far).Offering useful rationales for the test questions, the text also requires synthesis.Unlike the Nagelhout, it is also separated by systems, and type of exam questions to help one identify categories of weakness to re-exam during your study prep.Overall, one of the better board prep books i have seen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Review With Quality Explanations
I found this book to be most helpful in reviewing in preparation for a standardized mock boards for nurse anesthesia. If you run through the review book from beginning to end you will get good practice at answering board-style questions, be able to see the justification for the correct response, and most importantly identify trouble areas.

Review of Clinical Anesthesia follows the chapter outline and content from Barash's Clinical Anesthesia. The review provides a good mix of broad general concepts along with some of the more detailed minutia.

Very good resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars anesthesia review book
The book came in a timely fashion and was exactly as described. I would order again from the same source.

3-0 out of 5 stars Shallow
it's a good book and you can review topics from it, but questions are a little easy and shallow, so you can't really make an exercise for a test or a board, for example.

5-0 out of 5 stars good supplement to review for boards
This book is an good supplement to a review course and to a text in preparation for boards! Barash is an expert in the field of anesthesia and it is nice to have his text in a board prep format. The explanations for each question are great. Contrary to the other review, i don't the question format is weird or difficult at all. I also like that the chapters are short and limited to only 1 specific section with about 12 - 25 questions on each topic! I thought this book was a nice addition study efforts for boards!Good Luck! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ultimate Anesthesia Reference
While i can agree that Miller's Anesthesia is some dense reading, this is the anesthesia bible, and there is a reason that it can be your "one anesthesia book."Full of great material that delves deeply into every subject, from the history of opiods to current practice in peripheral blocks, this text will help you to become a knowledgeable provider, in the least. The older edition had a three page discussion on Ketamine, its history, and its full biochemical workings on the body as it is currently understood. This is a rare feature among anesthesia texts, because most feel comfortable simply detailing a drugs effects, contraindications and side effects without explaining fully what it does pharmacodynamically as well as kinetically. It is cumbersome to bring to classes, it's true, but as cover-to-cover reading goes, this is a book that will follow me through the rest of my career.
That being said:if you are a resident, not planning on working in anesthesia, this is *not* the book for you.It is "a lot" as one reviewer put it.A simpler text will get you through your rotation just as well, and take up far less of your valuable study (and sleep) time.
Also, if you are a beginning nurse anesthesia student, this might also not be a good primer in the study, as it is written with a lot of biochemistry and delves deeply into the workings of nearly every system in every chapter. However, that doesn't mean that you shouldn't take a gander at it and decide if it's for you.I feel i can sell my Morgan and Mikhail, my Nagelhout and my Stoelting's after having received this text.It has the answer to nearly every question i've had for it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good book
This is a very good book. I little hard to read but is very complete and I think is one of the best choices for a resident.

4-0 out of 5 stars Always good to have

4-0 out of 5 stars Board Stiff Three
Great book for tips on how to approach the oral boards.Definitely not a text book, but visits topics that every anesthesiologist should know.Gallagher is a goof and his style makes preparation fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars Board Stiff 3 oral board review
Excellent book, well written, good scenarios.Would still recommend oral board review course, but this is a great start, as is Board Stiff Too. Have heard great things about Dr. HO's oral board review, but have not attended one yet. Also know that Dr. Gallagher has a live oral board review course, but no information on the quality. Have to think, based on his books, that the live course would also be very well done.
Dr. Gallgher has authored/co-arthured several anesthesiology books. I don't have the first Board Stiff book, but I do have Board Stiff Too and Board Stiff Three. Both are excellent; very informative, great suggestions and considerations for study, and simultaneously entertaining.
Board Stiff Three has a DVD as well. Laughing out loud as you study actually helps me retain the information.Highly recommend this book and anything by this author (Chris Gallagher).Dr. Gallagher is an attending anesthesiologist at a highly respected program. I've heard he has been "Teacher of the Year." I wonder if Dr. Gallagher is as terrific in person, as in print.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book - dare I say "fun" to read?!
Great book, easy to read.Think I easily read the first 70 pages one evening....great scenarios and solutions

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Review
This is a great first book when preparing for the orals. The DVD with it is a humorous treatment of common mistakes made by candidates.I used the 2nd edition for my own oral board preparation.Would not recommend this as the only source for review. However, mastery of all the clinical vignettes contained herein would probably put you on a low pass trajectory. The Essential Oral Board Review by Michael D. Ho, M.D. is recommended for comprehensive review. The successful candidate should consider a live course since this is a "talking test."

Product Description
Although near-miss situations are relatively rare in anesthesiology, it is essential to know how to respond if the situation arises. This collection of actual cases, compiled from the author's 30+ years practice in major metropolitan hospitals in the US, Sweden and South Africa, is an excellent review of potential problems and solutions all anesthesiologists should be familiar with. The cases are succinct, with the problem and a solution described, then concluded by a retrospective analysis that examines whether the solution used was actually the best (or only) choice, or if other solutions might provide equally satisfactory outcomes. Also included in the analyses are tips to help avoid the problem altogether, when possible. This book is an excellent review for the ABA oral exam and is an easy and practical way to prepare for the unexpected in the daily practice of clinical anesthesia. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great quick reference
If you're looking for a detailed review, this is not the book.If you're looking for "what if" scenarios, this is it.These are all real cases that JBU and his residents were involved in.

Hopefully, you'll never come across these situations, but if you do, and have read this book, you'll have a starting point for your (emergent) therapy.

If you can find the earlier book, "Near Misses in Pediatric Anesthesia", grab it too. They are different cases.

My bias:I was a resident with JBU at Stanford 10 years ago.

Product Description
There are few situations in anesthesia where precise anatomic location is more important than in regional anesthesia. But, of course, any anesthesiologist who performs regional on a regular basis is fully aware of the frustration of attempting to locate nerves on a trial and error basis. Ultrasound imaging now enables us to visualize nerves, and this exciting technology offers several distinct benefits over conventional nerve locating techniques. The Atlas of Ultrasound and Nerve Stimulation-Guided Regional Anesthesia illustrates how to use ultrasound technology and nerve stimulation techniques to achieve consistently good results. Throughout the book, ultrasound images are correlated with MRI images to enhance anatomic identification. In addition, peripheral nerve block techniques for upper and lower extremities and the trunk are demonstrated step-by-step. With the luxury of being able to actually see the target nerve and the course of the needle as it approaches that nerve, anesthesiologists can now perform regional anesthesia with much greater accuracy. This approach allows the anesthesiologist to conduct regional anesthesia with much greater confidence and efficiency and in doing so the patient is the ultimate beneficiary in terms of success and safety. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Kindle Edition Review - Unacceptable Formatting
I purchased the electronic edition for my Kindle reader (not a DX) hoping to have this gold-standard reference text in a portable format. This is not a review of content (which, in its 7th edition, accumulates a hundred-plus years of collective anesthetic knowledge) but of the electronic formatting applied to a well-regarded text.

The single star rating sums up my assessment of the electronic adaptation of the textbook.

1. Failed font application
--The font grayscale covers a wide spectrum depending on organizational heirarchy (title, authors name, subject heading, captions, sidebar text, main text) but is often so faint as to be nearly illegible.I posit that this may reflect adaptations of colored printing to a B & W format, nevertheless, it's a crucial editorial oversight/neglect that renders this text nearly unusable

2. Poorly developed table of contents
--The TOC should have a direct link from the menu, instead, the reader must click Menu / Go-to... / 5way navigate to the TOC button
--The TOC lacks subheadings for the chapters. This is a 3000+ page textbook in 102 chapters giving an average 30+ page chapter length. Thirty paper pages is likely thirty pages on a DX but a lot more on the standard Kindle, or when font size is enlarged for ease of reading. The information dense text is extensively subdivided into topic headings that are, essentially, brief articles within each chapter. There is no effective means of skimming chapter sub-headings.
--The main TOC should have expandable subheadings. Each chapter should begin with another active TOC for sections within that chapter.

3. Awkward incorporation of graphics
--Most of the graphics are reproduced with adequate resolution (with zooming) and are accessible from active links within the text.
--The (low-res, small format) graphics still appear as part of the text-flow and interfere with cognitive continuity while reading and increase the number of page turns for a given subsection.
--Chart and table navigation is acceptable but clumsy when spread over more than one screen, more a device limitation than formatting issue.

Note to the publisher: developers of Miller (or any textbook) for electronic format would do well to look at how the New Yorker Magazine is put together for the Kindle.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable
I bought this book, from this seller and the order only included 1 volume!!!!!
The description says it's a hardcover book, over 3000 pages, but it doesn't say thy are selling you HALF the book.
Now I am stuck, because no one sell the other voleme by itself.

5-0 out of 5 stars book - assistant
This book is excellent assistent for begginers and for professionals. Strongly reccomend it for all professionals.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Gold Standard: Completely Revised
I can't believe I'm the first to write a review for this new edition that's been out for months. I searched online before purchasing recently to find if anyone had a review comparing this with the sixth edition and came up empty. I ended up purchasing after browsing a copy that a colleague had purchased.

This edition is about 100 pages shorter than the sixth edition across both volumes (3100 vs 3200). However, the two volumes of the seventh edition stacked together manage to be a solid inch less thick. This seems to be achieved with a slight, acceptably smaller font, as well as notably better quality paper. What's truly impressive about this revision is the addition of color throughout... lot's of color pictures and graphs, as well as borders that generally make the book much more visually stunning. I can't comment on the extra online features that come with the pricier version, but this version gives searchable online fulltext like the prior edition.

The few chapters and sections I've read seem to have been edited much better and I think this text is in general much more approachable than the last edition. In my practice, I've previously reviewed Barash or Morgan/Mikhail for brief matters and only consulted Miller when I wanted to really delve into a topic. With the way this edition reads, I'm solidly in the Miller camp and will use this as my primary reference. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description

This pocket book succinctly describes 215 common, serious errors made by attendings, residents, fellows, CRNAs, and practicing anesthesiologists in the practice of anesthesia and offers practical, easy-to-remember tips for avoiding these errors. The book can easily be read immediately before the start of a rotation or used for quick reference.

Each error is described in a quick-reading one-page entry that includes a brief clinical scenario, a short review of the relevant physiology and/or pharmacology, and tips on how to avoid or resolve the problem. Illustrations are included where appropriate. The book also includes important chapters on human factors, legal issues, CPT coding, and how to select a practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars interesting reading
This is a great book. Its nice for those with short attention spans like myself as each chapter is short and to the point. Interesting subjects are covered such as cardiac issues, pa catheters, iv access, medications, all kinds of good stuff. I'm an icu rn so some of the material is not relevant to me (nerve blocks, anesthetic gas, medical coding), but I enjoyed most of the book a lot. More readable than lots of other medical books, and most of it is relevant to critical care in some way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent service
I got my item quickly. The book was in excellent shape.I would definitely buy from this seller again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Reference
This is an outstanding collection of pearls for anesthesia providers of all levels from student to the fully qualified. Much of the material was not new after 35 years clinical experience but it made for a great review. The short anecdotal format is a comfortable method to learn and review this type of material. Unlike most anesthesia reference works it is an easy read and makes for nice 5 minute sessions.

I think it would make a good launching point for teaching moments with anesthesia trainees and other interested students. I wish I would have had something like this when I was working with trainees.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book. Very practical and easy to read
This is a great book. It has a lot of practical advice that has clinical applications, not just theory. This is what makes the book different from many of the other anesthesia texts. In addition there are 2 sections of the book that many other books don't cover: how to go about looking for jobs/assessing a practice you might join, and also medical coding and payment. The book is quite easy to read and each chapter or section is short and to the point. The authors and editors of the book are also donating the royalties of the book to the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER), which is a great cause. ... Read more
