Product Description

Angola has been brutalized by the civil war, which only ended in 1992. The war's adverse effect on every facet of Angola's post-independence life is clearly evident in the range of topics covered in this volume. The human cost of the war can be counted in the enormous loss of life and large-scale population displacement and in the continued postwar deaths and serious injuries inflicted by mines. The war also severely stunted economic growth and the development of necessary social services. However, since the end of the war Angola is slowly progressing. Many people have returned to their homes to continue their life. The task of rebuilding has been greatly assisted by humanitarian aid.

Readers will learn about the nearly 100 ethnolinguistic groups and their various ways of life. Oyebade shows how religion defines the cultural character of the country. Christianity, the dominant religion, is portrayed as more urban-based, popular among the educated elite and middle class. Indigenous religious practices, still popular particularly in the rural areas, are covered as well. Oyebade celebrates the prolific Portuguese-language literary output and the skilled Angolan artists. Discussion of the traditional foods, ceremonies, music and dance, and more rounds out the coverage.

Excerpt: The culture of Angola is influenced by several ethnicities which shaped the country. Portugal ruled over Angola for 400 years and both countries share cultural aspects: language (Portuguese) and main religion (Roman Catholic Christianity). However, the Angolan culture is mostly native Bantu which was mixed with Portuguese culture. The diverse ethnic communities with their own cultural traits, traditions and native languages or dialects include the Ovimbundu, Mbundu, Bakongo, Chokwe, and other peoples. There are over 100 distinct tribes and linguistic dialects in Angola. Although Portuguese is the official language, for many black Angolans it is a second or even third language. The three dominant ethnic groups are the Ovimbundu, Mbundu (Kimbundu) and the Bakongo. There are also small numbers of Mestico (mixed African and European descent) and ethnic white Europeans as well. The largest ethnolinguistic category, the Ovimbundu, were located in west-central Angola, south of Mbundu-inhabited regions. In 1988 the United States Department of State estimated that they constituted 37 percent of the population. The language of the Ovimbundu is Umbundu. The core area of the Ovimbundu kingdoms was that part of the Benguela Plateau north of the town of Huambo. Expansion continuing into the twentieth century enlarged their territory considerably, although most Ovimbundu remained in that part of the plateau above 1,200 meters in elevation. Like most African groups of any size, the Ovimbundu were...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=384457 ... Read more

An introductory section examines the changing roles of women since the 19th century in the context of Portuguese culture. Product Description
The moving collection evokes the agony and frustration borne of growing up in terminal exile and cultural limbo. But, from anguish and turmoil, the artist has wrought inspiration and crafted one of the most eloquent and commanding voices of contemporary Latin American literature. "This slim volume is studded with poetry that adds depth to the characters and action ... With short chapters that flow fluidly between the first and thurd person, Suárez reflects on 36 years as an outsider and on the memories--and the record of them--that kept him sane" (from Publishers Weekly). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful memoir written with a steady and insightful hand
This book pulls you in from page one as it travels like the human subconscious from beautiful memories to the skeletons we place delicately in closets. Suarez's knack for both poetry and prose makes the writing interesting--something you go back to again and again. I recommend this book to anyone who loves great writing and wants to experience another life and experience in a most intimate way.
