The outcrops are largely hidden under laterite. The median zone is composed largely of crystalline rocks with granites and some Palaeozoic unfossiliferous rocks. The littoral zone contains the only fossiliferous strata. These are of Tertiary and Cretaceous ages, the latter rocks resting on a reddish sandstone of older date. The Cretaceous rocks of the Dombe Grande region (near Benguella) are of Albian age and belong to the Acanthoceras mamillari zone. The beds containing Schloenbachia inflata are referable to the Gault. Rocks of Tertiary age are met with at Dombe Grande, Mossamedes and near Loanda. The sandstones with gypsum, copper and sulfur of Dombe are doubtfully considered to be of Triassic age. Recent eruptive rocks, mainly basalts, form a line of hills almost bare of vegetation between Benguella and Mossamedes. Nepheline basalts and liparites occur at Dombe Grande. The presence of gum copal in considerable quantities in the superficial rocks is characteristic of certain regions. Original, daring research. Beautifully written.
Oil politics, environmental impacts, civil war, Western oil companies, inequality: these are some of the subjects and themes explored by Dr. Reed in Crude Existence. In the book, Reed describes how both off- and onshore oil drilling has contributed to war, poverty and inequality in Angola. She describes the partnership between Western oil companies and the Angolan government, relating how the profits from oil fueled decades of civil war, and continue to allow a semi-authoritarian leader and his allies to reap copious rewards while the majority of Angolans remain impoverished.

Reed conveys an amazing depth of understanding, drawing on a year's worth of field research that only the most daring researcher could do, in some of the least hospitable situations on the planet. She brings attention to a corner of the globe infrequently visited by Western academics or journalists, Angola, where civil war raged until months before she began research. And within Angola, she focuses on Cabinda, a little-known province that has been attempting to secede from Angola since before its independence in 1975, maintaining constant and continued militarization. (Cabinda is the site of the 2010 Africa Cup killing of several Togolese football players.)

This book should be read by anyone interested in Africa, civil war, the impacts of oil, and the "resource curse." Unlike many academic books, it is a pleasure to read - Reed has a grace with language, and illustrates many of her academic points with vignettes and stories from her many interviews and experiences. ... The war's adverse effect on every facet of Angola's post-independence life is clearly evident in the range of topics covered in this volume. The human cost of the war can be counted in the enormous loss of life and large-scale population displacement and in the continued postwar deaths and serious injuries inflicted by mines.
