Product Description
A harrowing, yet inspiring, true story of one family's struggle to save their daughter Excerpts from the actual diaries of a mother and daughter take you inside their home, their family, and their minds to see how they react to, cope with, and ultimately win their battle over teen depression and eating disorders. Linda Rio, a psychologist and family therapist experiences her worst nightmare-as she's helping other families cope, she's unable to recognize or respond to her own daughter's dangerous eating disorder. Her daughter, Tara, overwhelmed by pressures at school, feels the disorder taking over her life but is unable to stop it. Eventually, she attempts suicide and is committed to a hospital. Day-by-day, crisis-by-crisis, the journals tell the parallel story of mother and daughter, living together but with wildly different perceptions. More than just a view inside this family's ordeal, The Anorexia Diaries offers help and hope to others dealing with this problem. Advice and commentary is included from Craig Johnson, Ph.D., who helps readers understand how to recognize and treat anorexia and bulimia in their own families. LINDA RIO is a licensed marriage and family therapist for more than 15 years in southern California. TARA RIO spends her free time speaking about her teenage experience with eating disorders and poor body image. CRAIG JOHNSON, PH.D., is the director of the eating disorders program at Laureate Psychiatric Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He is president-elect of Eating Disorders Awareness and Prevention and former director of the National Eating Disorders Organization. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars ABizarre, Horrible Book
Were they kidding? This kid developed anorexia because HER MOM WORKED?Well, she should slit her throat if she HAD A JOB.This book was difficult to get into.I felt that this kid was really spoiled if her mother was making her breakfast at the age of seventeen. Her mother seemed to do alot for her family and this child did not appear to be grateful for it at all. This book was undeveloped, and the reasons for the problem were not fully explored or explained.

1-0 out of 5 stars NOTHING TO DO WITH ANOREXIA FOR MORE THAN HALF OF THE BOOK!!
I'm a recovering anorexic who assumed this book would help me relate to the mother and daughter in this book. It was non discriptive, including not even telling how low Tara's weight got, her weeks in treatment, and didn't say how much she lost. They never said she got sick looking or anything related. The rest of the book was complete garbage about how she is doing at home and at school. O yeah, her mother is so naive to even pay attention to how her health was going. " Tara looks kindof blank and sad", says her mother. WELL DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT IF YOU'RE A PSCHYATRIST AND HELP HER!!! don't waste you're time and money on this book. it's just not worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars True story, Real insight. Good Theories.
I thought this mother/daughter story was very accurate and sincere. How wonderful that they kept such a telling record of thier struggles for others to read. Many other reviewers have said that this is too "easy, boring, and worhtless", I think those may be the readers who are reading eating disorder books to feed thier own eating issues...like "Wasted", which many have called a handbook for how to have an eating disorder. I think this story is not as graphic as some, but it is a true account of a mother and daughter and thier struggles with a deadly disease. Also, the commentary by Dr. Craig Johnson was very interesting to read. He is very well known in this field, and he covers many issues in a very easy-to-understand way in this book.
Remember, not all eating disorder books are going to be as graphic as books such as "Wasted", but then again, not all eating disorders are that graphic either.

2-0 out of 5 stars Superficial and simple
Without trivializing the sufferings of the Rio family, I honestly feel like this book offers no insight to the complexity of anorexia nervosa.Tara's eating disorder - which was not anorexia at all, but bulimorexia - was a relatively short ordeal, and she did not hide it from her family like many sick young women do (or like the excerpt from the back of the book would have the prospective reader believe she did).Introspection is nihil - rarely expressed is sentiment deeper than "I feel fat".Moreover, the overall tone is self-centered, as the authors never speculate upon the epidemic nature of the disease; I call this sort of self-congratulatory, non-academic memoir "victimization literature."For these reasons and more, I cannot recommend this title as a quality account of an eating disorder.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Insightful-A Raw Look at Real Life
I found this book to be refreshingly real and raw. Beyond the scope of eating disorders it addressed everyday issues I think many teen girls are battling with. As a woman in my mid-twenties, I related to much of Tara's thoughts while also gaining a sense of empathy for the struggles I put my own mother through.

I think every woman will relate to at least some aspect of the Rio's story. As a recovered bulimic, I've read MANY books about eating disorders. However, few have touched me the way this one has. I'm tired of reading books from a clinical point of view. This one read like a soap opera and kept my interest to the very end. ... Read more

Product Description
Anorexia nervosa - deliberate self-starvation - has been estimated to afflict one in 200 white females between the ages of 12 and 18. Bulimia - binge-eating followed by self-induced vomiting, laxative abuse, or fasting - can occur as a symptom of anorexia nervosa or as a separate syndrome. Its prevalence in the population is harder to measure since sufferers do not necessarily lose noticeable amounts of weight and their behavior can be kept secret. Recent research indicates that the incidence of these disorders is increasing and that they are associated with serious medical and psychological risks. Because the causes and symptoms of anorexia nervosa and bulimia overlap, they are best looked at together, as part of a spectrum of eating disorders. Few books, however, provide an integrated approach. The book is organized in three parts. Part one, on diagnosis and assessment, includes a discussion of the medical complications and the complex psychodynamics of anorexia nervosa and bulimia. Part two outlines the treatment plans developed at the University of Minnesota and at other medical centers. Mitchell and his colleagues describe the application of behavioral principles to the treatment of eating disorders, explaining specific techniques such as cognitive therapy and adaptive skills training; they also evaluate the results of drug therapy and offer practical suggestions for clinicians on its use. This part closes with a comprehensive plan for each disorder. Many observers believe that eating disorders are related - at least in part - to a paradox in American culture: that in a society with an overabundance of food, the ideal of beauty is an unnaturally thin body. The book ends with an exploration of adolescent attitudes toward weight and eating, based on previous studies and the findings of an extensive survey of adolescent males and females. In its assessment of personal, cultural, and gender-related attitudes toward weight, the survey helps us understand the ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This is an excellent book. ...I would recommend this book to those suffering from an eating disorder, or to the friends and family of a sufferer as it gives great inssight.

5-0 out of 5 stars DANGERS OF DIETING
I read the novel 'Catherine' a few years ago, and it deeply saddened me. 'Catherine' is written by the mother of a twenty-two year old girl who diedof anorexia nervosa in 1984.

The testimony is a brave and frank accountof Catherine's terrible illness which gripped her from the age of fifteenyears old.It intersperses extracts from Catherine's diary, which show thetragic mental and physical effect this illness had on her.Her diaryrecords her food intake, and her weight, which tragically plummets to 3stone when she dies.

It touches on her childhood days, where Catherinewas a happy and bubbly child, and continues throughout the development ofher illness.

I would recommend this book to anyone, especially younggirls considering dieting. It shows how out of hand dieting can be, andcertainly a great help to those suffering from anorexia. I myself sufferedfrom this illness, and this book gave me some strength to battle with it. I didn't want to die like Catherine, and the many other girls who die eachyear from this horrifying condition.

5-0 out of 5 stars truthful insight into an often romaticised world
eating disorders are often romanticised; few know of the realpain which they cause, and courage which they demand, in both thesufferer and the family members and friends.this touching documentary of a young girls struggle with, and eventual defeat by anorexia nervosa is openly told by her mother and accompanied by excerts from her diaries.as the book so truthfully details catherine's behaviours, it may be disturbing to the unaware, tear-wrenching to those directly/indirectly affected but yet also so critical to the understanding of the seriousness of these psychological disorders.

4-0 out of 5 stars sad but true
This book tells of the reality of anorexia nervosa. The stress on the family; the ineffectiveness of treatment (which still goes on today); the states of the Catherine's mind. It's one for the parents of eating disorderchildren.

5-0 out of 5 stars The only real Life book that I have ever appriciated
I thought that I would be shocked by this book, and touched to a new level.I was.I was shocked by how any person could ever feel the way Catherine did and also shocked that there was a book written by a Motherabout her daughter dying.Howvever, it was so incredibly moving and itreduces me to tears every time I read it.Bettered only by Love Story(Segal). ... 1-0 out of 5 stars blaming the parents again
I read this book back in graduate school, and, knowing nothing then about living with an adolescent with anorexia, it seemed to me to be a perfectly fine text. However, now we've crossed over that bridge, and saw this develop in our daughter regardless of how we tried to prevent it.

Blaming the parents is toxic, unhelpful, and thoughtless. Assigning causality (and thus blame) to traits you find in families going through these difficult situations when you should recognize that correlation is not the same as causality is really toxic. We no longer talk about the "schizophrenigenic" parent, and it is cruel to blame parents for their children developing a brain disease or disorder.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Study of the Role of Family in Anorexia Nervosa
In "Psychosomatic Families: Anorexia Nervosa in Context,"Salvador Minuchin and his co-authors argue that anorexia nervosa is not a neurosis that is limited to an isolated individual. On the contrary, they argue that anorexia belongs to an ailing social structure--specifically, that of the family.Minuchin's analyses of a variety of family therapy sessions both support this claim and reveal a number of communication patterns that are typically found in anorectic families--such as enmeshment, excessive tendencies to nurture or protect, and the failure to acknowledge or address emotional claims.Minuchin offers a unique and compelling analysis of anorexia nervosa that will be of interest to those who are studying or treating the neurosis as well as to those who are struggling with anorexia nervosa in their own lives. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars TRIGGERING
Please do not read this book if you are in the midst or in recovery from an ED. The author's journey through her ED describes habits and tricks that will be triggering to you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Heartbreaking but true
One of the few things I've come across about anorexia which blows the myths to pieces. Chris was not "the good child" nor was she a "perfectionist," nor did she have a lot of the attrbutes often pinned on people with eating disorders.

She describes frankly the hellish journey from anorexia through to bulimia nervosa, in calm monotone, with no miracles or drama- this wasn't glamourised.

What struck me about this particular autobiography was that she wasn't dramatising her situation, nor was she asking for pity or admiration. She was just telling it like it is, intelligently, honestly, and in a sense that would make people without eating disorders possibly understand a little more as to why people do this to themselves.

A must have on the bookshelf for any counsellor, family member, parent or friend who wants to try and help or understand someone with either anorexia or bulimia.

Product Description
This new edition of Anorexia Nervosa: Guidelines for Assessment and Treatment in Primary and Secondary Care, updates the earlier edition which was so well received when first published in 1994. As before, it is based on Professor Crisp's longstanding views which came to be known as the "St. George's" approach to anorexia nervosa. The book aims to outline in a clear, practical way, the minimal intervention necessary within primary and secondary care settings if the psychopathology of this serious and life-threatening illness is first to be identified and then treated with some hope of success.

The approach outlined in the book is the first attempt at a time-limited and meaningful intervention in the assessment and care of anorexia nervosa. The approach involves concurrent use by both patient and therapist (and also, to some extent, the family) of the "self-help" bookAnorexia Nervosa: The Wish to Change and the Patient's Log Book. Together, the three books form the clinician's pack. Further copies ofAnorexia Nervosa: The Wish to Change and the Patient's Log Book may be purchased separately and discounts are available for bulk purchases of 10 or more copies (see order form for further information). ... Product Description
In an extensively revised new edition of the successful Anorexia and Bulimia, Richard Gordon includes new information and discussion of the latest ideas in this rapidly growing research field. There is extensive discussion of the clinical aspects of disorders, in particular their relationship to obsessive-compulsive disorder, plus data of recovery and mortality. It also provides accounts of the latest research on the epidemiological status of eating disorders and the subsequent debate that this work has engendered. Further new features include the analysis of the role of sexual abuse in eating disorders; the relationship of obesity to anorexia and bulimia, and consideration of the recent debates surrounding the politics of eating disorders. The past two decades have witnessed an enormous increase in the number of cases of eating disorders in industrial societies. Richard Gordon brings together historical and cultural perspectives, as well as his own clinical experience, in order to examine the sociocultural roots of this apparent epidemic. The high incidence of these once rare conditions in contemporary societies can be traced to a number of interrelated factors: the changing role of women, the increasingly difficult transition from adolescence to adulthood, the social importance attached to physical beauty which focuses on thin body shape, a general pursuit of health and fitness and, ironically, the glamorization of anorexia in the mass media which has made its symptoms fashionable. ... Product Description
Looking at the sociohistorical and sociocultural context, this study investigates examples of anorexia nervosa, a highly symbolic form of nonverbal discourse, in a selection of French novels spanning the period 1835-1889. In each of the novels, there is an unmistakable association between literal and figurative hunger, whereby the protagonists become human signs of their private, unconscious protest. They refuse food not because they are not hungry, but because they hunger too much for effectiveness and self-fulfillment. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars oversimplifying anorexia..
First of all, this "book" is more like a "pamphlet"...very thin-90 pages of actual 'authorship', with large margins and corny pictures.
The author gives an oversimplified description of anorexia, repeating the idea that everyone with anorexia's maximum weight is 7 stone--or 98 lbs.It does say that this weight may be higher for males or people who are taller, but by repeating this 'maximum weight' in sort of minimizes/invalidates the experience of tall (athletic) women suffering from anorexia.I am a tall and athletic woman with anorexia, yet with a weight not nearly that low.The meal plan is helpful, although the units of measurements are in grams, rather than ounces and may be difficult to convert if you are an american.Anyway, it is a decent book--a different approach to writing about recovery, but rather basic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reading is Beginning
As a person suffering with an eating disorder, I really appeciated that fact that this book does not "talk down" to a sufferer.I felt like my indivdual problems were recognised. After reading this book I amexcited, I now have a plan of action for recovery. The book states 30steps to recovery, but I think a better title is 30 steps to FREEDOM.Iwould recommend this book to any sufferer, if they want to seek help! ... Product Description

Alice in the Looking Glass is a moving memoir written by a mother and her anorexic daughter, Alice. At ten, Alice was an easy-going, free spirited child with a tremendous sense of humour, adored by everyone who knew her. At eleven, she started to develop her "rigmaroles"—little rituals which grew into severe Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and then, at fourteen, turned into anorexia. In the first part of the book, Jo Kingsley writes with raw intensity about Alice's illness and what she hopes is her recovery. Jo describes her journey through what she calls Planet Anorexia, recognizing the amazing support she received both professionally and personally and telling of the long periods of despair, guilt, anger and, as the mother of a much-loved child, sheer terror. In the second part of the book Alice, now on the road to recovery, also looks back over the past nine years. She writes vividly and honestly about herself, her illness, her treatment and recovery, other sufferers she met, and her relationship with her mother, friends and siblings. By opening their hearts and writing this book, Jo and Alice's wish is to pass on their experiences, to share their doubts, failures, anxieties and eventually some successes in the hope of supporting other families going through the same trauma.

This is an exceptionally well written book which serves as an excellent resource for those seeking recovery or for anyone trying to better understand what it's like to battle an eating disorder.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reader Review
This is just an awesome book.As a recovering anorexic, i have found this book not only hopeful and inspiring, but helpful and fascinating. It has made me think of my eating disorder in a whole new way.Instead of talking about afflicted people as "sick," it refers to "insiders" and discusses a way of thinking where one views their disorder as separate from themself, rather than who they are. It's fascinating and i highly reccommend it for people suffering from an eating disorder, those who are recovered, friends and family of sufferers, and just anyone who has an interest.great!

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
As someone who has struggled with anorexia for over half my life, I have often found myself reading anything on anorexia I could lay my hands on; desperately searching for the reassurance that comes from knowing one is not alone in one's experiences, as well as for some elusive insight that might assist me in resisting anorexia's stranglehold over my life.Yet frequently I have come away from such reading feeling dissatisfied and disheartened. Not so with 'Biting the Hand that Starves You'; in this book I found so much of what I had been searching for and a whole lot more.

While the authors are not the first professionals to draw on `insider knowledges' (the knowledges of people with first-hand experiences of anorexia/bulimia), the prominence and the respect accorded to such knowledges is unprecedented. The result is a book that speaks compellingly of anorexia/bulimia, and crucially, does so in a manner that is never patronising, pathologising or didactical.

Providing exciting new ways of thinking and speaking about anorexia/bulimia, the book engenders a sense of hope - a 'commodity' that is often desperately lacking, yet so vital when it comes to resisting anorexia/bulimia.

I highly recommend the book to all readers, from those struggling with anorexia/bulimia, to their family and friends, and health professionals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Waiting for this Great Book!
I only wish that Rick, David, and Ali had written this book years ago! Because Biting the Hand that Starves You would have been an incredible source of information, motivation, and hope when I was desperately struggling in the depths of my eating disorder.

I was thrilled to see that the book vividly illustrates the vicious dialogue that occurs between the eating disorder and the individual who suffers with it. Throughout my recovery, psychotherapist and author Thom Rutledge encouraged me to practice this very dialogue between my true self (Jenni) and my eating disorder (`Ed') over and over again, which was crucial to my finding the amazing freedom I experience today.

Biting the Hand that Starves You includes many uplifting, inspirational personal accounts that reveal people can and do beat anorexia/bulimia! Within the book, the authors compassionately share how you can really make practical steps to join the ranks of those who already walk that path of independence.

Unlike many other books, Biting the Hand that Starves You goes a step beyond just focusing on how to recover from specific eating disordered behaviors. It also talks about moving on and reclaiming your life --- providing great insight on overcoming perfectionism, taking risks, and even pursuing dreams and passions.

This is one book that I am glad I came across on the shelves of eating disorder literature. I just wish it would have appeared a little bit sooner!

5-0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary book
Biting the Hand that Starves You is a very special book that it likely to change the way you view eating disorders. It contains many first hand accounts of women's struggles to free themselves from the ways bulimia and anorexia control their lives. And it maps out the nature of this control, which is beyond the attempt to control food and weight--it's tied to societial messages about how women should behave (take care of others, be nice to everyone, perform well in many arenas, etc.).The book is primarily written for therapists but will be helpful to others affected by bulimia and anorexia. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Unfair criticism: Beware of sensationalism
My daughter has been suffering with anorexia and bulimia for years. I paid $40,000 out of pocket to what is considered to be "one of the best in the U.S." eating disorder recovery clinics. Sad to say they made a lot of mistakes. That was a year ago and now she is back to square one. I have read Peggy's book and know that she has many of the correct ideas for therapy, that are not always utilized at other clinics. I appreciate the courage she has shown in trying to help those with this unbelievably tough illness.
I could easily write a book about the mistakes that the clinic made that my daughter went to, as could other parents. Bottom line, medicine and psychology still have a lot to learn in how eating disorders should be treated. I appreciate that there are alternatives for those that are seemingly impossible to treat.

1-0 out of 5 stars How sad the media slants thing
I personally know this clinic.I reviewed it for a major health care organization. The doors were never locked, but always thrown open.I had access to everything and everyone there during my visits.I was never denied access to records, clients, etc.
The author creates sensationalism which their business thrives on.Peggy Claude Pierre did help many, and hopefully, still is.I note that the author dwells on the few that didn't suceed in the program rather than the large number that did.I had a patient that went there and as testament, I continue to receive cards from the parents yearly from the family for being a part of saving their daughters life (who when I accepted the case was being sent home from a large medical facility to let her rest comfortably while she was dying).
Peggy may not be conventional but anyone who has seen her with an infant crying...or a client crying can tell she has the touch. She truly cares about people and the work she is doing.
And....why don't we attack her and David for making some money.Let's see now...has the author gained from this book.If not personal monetary gain, has she gotten her name "out there" on a sensational book?People aren't allowed to make money.None of the attackers made money? When I frist met Peggy and David they were struggling.I don't know their financial condition now, nor do I need to know. They need to make a living like everyone else, so we condemn then becuase they have to worry where the money was going to come from?Wake up!!Go to ANY hospital in the United States with no insurance card, with a major catastrophic illness needing surgery and see if you get the services wtihout a way of granting payment.See if the hospital or health care organization doesn't ask you for the deed to your home.Get real! This is the way it works. There are bills to pay.I work for a major health organization and I "KNOW" how the system works.Let's compare their salaries to those of large hospital CEO's and see if we can find the differences in the millions in yearly compensation.
Further...it's so very sad when people can't have hugs or some sort of compassion.Does the author have ANY idea of the number of children and medically and psychologically fragile patients that NEED a hug?Any idea of the number of children that don't even know what a hug is?
Yeah, there have probably been mistakes with the approaches.I was a difficult one to convince that the program would work not being a medical model. It did though. Now, taking the authors approach we should probably condemn the frontrunners of sucess for thinking outside the box.Thank God the author didn't get to Christian Bernard or the many others like him.
I wasted my money on this book only becuase I got it cheap.I never had a desire to read it.I threw it out.I wouldn't pass it on to anyone.
How sad that journalism is all about this anymore.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Eye Opener
This book shows Peggy Claude Pierre's lack of knowledge concerning eating disorders. This book is a must read for anyone interested in one Of PeggyClaude-Pierre's books.I am so glad this book was written because Peggy is very convincing. But it's not realistic to work with clients 24 hrs a day for a year.If other eating disorder specialists spent that much time on thier clients they'd have similiar success as Peggy.

1-0 out of 5 stars what bullfunky
it's wonder how she got this book written. i personally was a patient of the clinic when this all "went down" and i can vouch that most of this book is based on stories that are not truthful. don't waste your money or your time on this book. i am well now and bottom line is that i got well because of the montreux clinic. peggy has never claimed that she "gets anorexics well" and anyone who has ever been associated with an anorexic knows darn well that the patient has to be the one to get them well. the montreux clinic works because it's a safe place where people understand the underlying problem and give you a place to discover who you are meant to be. get your facts right, Meg, before you slander a place that has helped so many. this was nothing but a personal attack on someone who helped me save my own life, and i think it's disgusting.

1-0 out of 5 stars People need to know the Truth
I knew employees from the clinic. The author speaks truth boldly..and extremely well documented.Good work. ... Read more
