Product Description
Therapists and their clients benefit from understanding how anxiety isgenerated in the brain, how it can become panic or unbounded worry, andultimately how the brain re-establishes the neurochemical balance thatis basic to a state of well-being.These insights in the brain underlying mental phenomena put anxiety into a perspective that makes it easier to become calm, and provides the bases for effective intervention with thought exercises, breathing techniques, and behavioral adaptations.

The Anxious Brain is a timely clinical guide.Current statistics show that up to one-third ofAmericans suffers a panic attack during theirlifetime and up to eight percent is currentlysuffering from one of the anxiety disorders.Medication, once considered the first line oftreatment, is losing public favor as clientsrealize their symptoms re-emerge when they stopusing the drugs. However, our increasingunderstanding of the brain offers clinicians and clients a new and expanding set of resources that include but go well beyond pharmacologicaltreatments.

Wehrenberg and Prinz describe brain structure and function and neurotransmitter activity related to the three major anxiety disorders in a way that psychotherapists can better understand, diagnose, and effectively treat anxiety disorders. Rich in neurophysiological diagrams and practical exercises that target the activity of specific neurological mechanisms, this book shows us how to take control of our brains to alleviate various anxiety disorders. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Axiously awaited
Among the crippling effects of panic and anxiety disorders is the shame and guilt sufferers place on themselves for not being able to control their cognitions and the stigmas about mental illness. While written for clinicians, this book can be liberating for anyone looking for the brain-based causes of their panic or anxiety. It offers clinicians a number of modalities for treating panic and anxiety, ranging from cognitive behavioral therapy to breathing to drugs (with descriptions of which drugs fit which symptoms).

This book should go a long way toward removing the stigma of this often hidden set of disorders that destroy the quality of life for its sufferers, and offer simple, proven modalities that, in the hands of a qualified therapist can change lives.

4-0 out of 5 stars the anxious brain
I read this book because I have issues with anxiety and repetitive thinking. It does have some technical info on the brain which is not easy to grasp for the layman, but it was pretty fascinating to see all the intricacies of brain function.
I found it very helpful in understanding the different types of anxiety disorders, how they are different from each other, and their treatment. It was informative on practical ways to abate compulsive thinking- without medication, and when appropriate, very comprehensive information on the many different medications in use for treating different anxiety disorders. She lists which medications are appropriate for each type of problem, and from a practitioners perspective, which meds to use first, then which to go to if those aren't a good fit, and so forth. Also she lists all the possible side affects of the individual medications, some history of their use and how to match the right drug to the patient according to a variety of factors. Thereis a lot of good information in this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Tough, tough but excellent
Okay, this is tough material and it is for those of us who need to understand what anxiety and worry really are because it is killing us and ruining the quality of our lives even if it does not lead to some sort of crippling depression. Not a light feel good experience.

This book is an assembly of papers presented as chapters. If you choose this book please read a chapter and shelve it for a few days while you ponder what you are learning.

General Anxiety Disorder deconstructed. The rationalist in you can use the tools you can fashion here.I think that understanding what worry is not just what it feels like has been very useful for me.Expect some discomfort here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully detailed survey of the topic
As someone who has struggled with GAD for decades and only started reading about the disorder last year, this is a remarkable book. Even if you have forgotten your undergraduate statistics, despair not. There is plenty in this book that is easily consumed by the non-specialist.

Although the psych literature acknowledges that shame and guilt are significant components of the entire anxiety package, I think people who don't know what it's like to live with GAD don't really understand how terribly important working on this component is to eventual remission.

This book is useful to the sufferer in that it so clearly describes the experience of living daily with GAD and explains so specifically the mechanisms that drive anxiety and the development of the disorder. That goes a long way toward helping the sufferer begin to restructure their thinking about their disorder. Instead of seeing it, as they always have, as a major character flaw, they can begin to examine it as a cognitive response that can be retrained through cognitive behavioral therapy; a skill that the client learns that they can take with them through the rest of their life.

A more accessible book for laypeople is "The Anxious Brain," which is written for clinicians and is targeted at treatment. That book is smaller and leaves the expansive details to the citations. It's an excellent reference for both clinicians and clients.

But the book for which this review is written is a marvelous compilation of the latest in the field. Buy it or get it on interlibrary loan. Having gotten mine on loan, I now want to get a copy to refer to again and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great resource for therapists
As a psychologist specializing in treating anxiety, Generalized Anxiety would have to be potentially the hardest to treat as it is so fluid and hard to pin down unlike other anxiety disorders such as specific phobias. The author is regarded as one of the leading experts in the area of anxiety. This book is accademically based so if you are wanting a light read then this may not be for you. Witht that said it's easy to read and is grounded in the latest research for treating GAD. I have found it very useful for working with worriers in my private work. If you like reading about cutting edge research and are feeling frustrated with not being able to help clients who are the typical 'Worry warts' then this book is a must for your library. The author has also written a fantastic book on running 'anxiety groups' for practioners - brilliant.

1-0 out of 5 stars Caveat Emptor.
Be very careful to think through what you read in this book. It is way too jolly in tone. This is a serious mental health disease and the "caregiver" in this author's opinion, ought to be willing to take on more than a living human being can. Should you be involved with someone with a serious anxiety disorder, I would strongly recommend that you seek out a psychologist or psychiatrist who specializes in working not with the patient, but with the caregiver who has very different needs. This book is not a heavy duty work so it may serve as an introduction to someone who knows absolutely nothing about anxiety disorders. But do know, I personally don't think the author has a clue when it comes to the extreme hurt and pain that the caregiver most likely will face for a long, long time. There is no cure. There is no wonder drug. There are things that help but they have to be taken properly and often aren't. The one piece of truth here is that 80% of people married to people with an anxiety disorder end up divorced. And there is a reason for that and it's all over the pages of this book.Everything is about the patient who yes, is in awful trouble, but is not held accountable for the hurt and pain caused. Possibly the patient doesn't realize what he is doing but even so, being a figurative human punching bag is not what an untrained spouse should be forced to put up with. Many of them know no truth or human kindness and at the end don't even appreciate the care that is given.
So do find yourself more competent help than is offered here especially if you are meeting anxiety disorders for the first time, or if you are considering leaving your spouse to save your own sanity. It is a moral dilemma from hell and the subject deserves a much more serious book than this.

My son was recently diagnosed with GAD and associated issues that I struggled to understand. This book provides excellent insight to help lift the veil of confusion and help you begin the journey to understanding and recovery.

3-0 out of 5 stars Basic Info
This is the first book I've read about the topic of helping or caregiving for a loved one suffering with anxiety disorders. It was helpful on a general level and was a good starting place for me.I learned a little more about what the sufferer goes thru and how I might be unwittingly adding to their anxiety.I liked the author's writing style, which was very comfortable and much like getting information from a friend who's already been on this journey.

5-0 out of 5 stars this book may have saved my life
Ken Strong warns his readers not to be too quick to say, "Hey, that's me!" when just one or two of the symptoms he describes in his book seem to fit the reader. So, I started reading with the true intent of NOT reading too much into it.So, it was even more amazing to me when I found that just about every single symptom listed in this book describes me!I finally could identify my 'problem'.Being an anxious person my initial reaction was...ohmygod, I'm an anxious person, now what?!But, then I had an amazing sense of relief!I now know what needs attention in my life and WHY it is so important to do something/a lot of things to help myself right now. This book gave me so much peace of mind.Thank you Ken Strong for writing a reader-friendly book that may have just saved my life.

5-0 out of 5 stars exciting behavioral treatment
I used this book to create a hypothetical treatment plan for an anxiety disorder for my developmental behavior class. The book was very thorough and practical.

5-0 out of 5 stars User-Friendly
The manual is very user-friendly. It takes a while to really sift through all the ideas, but the first two parts are designed so that you don't have to re-read the important ideas several times. The main themes are recapitulated in different wordings and contexts to make you understand. The treatment section is extremely clear, with both step-by-step guidance and explanations for the activities. Though the design is quite explicit, the authors urge you to design the treatment specifically for each patient, and even give suggestions of how to do so.

5-0 out of 5 stars A useful tool
This is a fantastic tool, giving the therapist useful theory as well as specific outlines for sessions.Great for the beginner ACT therapist. The CD contains lots of useful worksheets for clients, and step-by-step outlines for therapists including lots of wonderful metaphors and stories.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Tremendous Contribution
Having been trained in the 70's as a behavior therapist, I moved away from BT in the 80's as I became disillusioned with the mechanistic quality of the approach. Eifert and Forsyth's book beautifully brings the best of behavior therapy together with a more humanistic and interpersonal focus to provide in ACT a truly new paradigm. The so-called "third wave" of behavior therapy incorporates much of the best of other schools while remaining grounded in solid science.
I have found ACT to be a potent weapon in dealing with the anxiety disorders that our clients bring to us. I highly recommend this book for any practitioner of any orientation to wants to broaden their perspective and become more effective in treating these most debilitating disorders.

5-0 out of 5 stars THANK-YOU TO THE AUTHORS

5-0 out of 5 stars A way to support family and friends
Having a close family member recently diagnosed with Panic Anxiety Disorder, I found the book extremely useful in both understanding the illness and knowing how to support this person. The author provides easy-to-understand details about the illness and solid ways of supporting loved-ones.Now, I feel like I can talk to my family member and no longer have to side-step the discussion.A must-read for anyone who has loved ones with this condition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Panic and Anxiety Disorder: 121 Tips, Real-life Advice, Reso
Having personal experience with an anxiety disorder, I found Linda's book to have practical, reassuring information that I have been searching for for a long time. No one can really understand an anxiety disorder unless they have first-hand knowledge of it. The author speaks from her heart. Many of the mental-health professionals I have spoken to do not have this level of insight.

4-0 out of 5 stars A valuable resource
This book is a valuable addition to the others on the subject. Written in a direct and compassionate voice, it provides great insight and assistance to anyone connected to this disorder. I myself do not suffer from it; however, I'm close to a number of people who do. This book is a tremendous help to those of us who must learn to cope with a loved one who has a panic/anxiety disorder. And it provides an excellent tool to begin safely discussing the topic with that loved one. Lastly, I've had the privilege to meet the author on a couple occasions and talk about the issue -- she is truly knowledgeable, sensitive, and passionate about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple, basic stuff that works.
I'd heard about Linda's upcoming tips book on Panic and Anxiety Disorder, but wasn't really interested in reading it, mainly because it was a "tips" book; I've seen those booklets in the check-out line, and always considered them vague and rather gimmicky. So, when I first picked up "Panic and Anxiety Disorder, 121 Tips, Real-life Advice, Resources & More", not only was I surprised by its book-like appearance, I was also drawn to its calm, down-to-earth approach to self-help.Yes, there are numbered tips, but as I read, I realized this wasn't implicitly for someone coping with anxiety disorders; Linda has written to everybody. Her tips, while pinpointing individual aspects of anxiety, actually address the very simple, basic, moment-by-moment steps to follow in order to successfully survive just about any stressful inner conflict. From digging in the earth to truly relearning the art of breathing, Linda's guidance is straightforward and simultaneously profound. Not leaving any stone unturned, Linda has dedicated an entire chapter to folks who've found themselves in the challenging role of support, and included numerous sources of additional literature and information.

Linda Manassee Buell has written this book with the compassion and personal landscape of someone who's lived in the cave of fear, and who's triumphantly emerged into the sunshine. ... Read more

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and major depression (MD) form the largest group of common mental disorders. These two conditions often occur together, and emerging evidence suggests several similarities between them. As we move toward revising the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders for DSM-V, Diagnostic Issues in Depression and Generalized Anxiety Disorder: Refining the Research Agenda for DSM-V explores the nosologic relationship between GAD and MD. This book acts as a guidepost for the entire DSM process. It reviews recent scientific advances in our understanding of the interrelationship between GAD and MD, summarizes the body of evidence into a few broad conclusions, and reflects on the implications of these findings for future nosologic efforts. The contributing authors review conceptual issues and empirical data from a variety of perspectives, including genetics, biology, treatment, development, course, predictors, disability, and psychosocial stressors.Diagnostic Issues in Depression and Generalized Anxiety Disorder develops operationalized criteria for nosologic decisions that enable clinicians to bridge the gap between data and diagnostic recommendations. Not only does the methodology of investigating an active interchange between empirical and conceptual perspectives shed new light on the relationship between GAD and MD, but it also carries implications for the rest of DSM-V. ... Product Description
Traditional theories on the anxiety disorders have focused on intrapersonal factors, such as cognitive, affective, behavioral, physiological, and genetic processes. Yet, those who treat and conduct research with anxious individuals know that interpersonal processes interact with anxiety symptoms. How can we begin to reconcile research and clinical experiences with current theoretical accounts? In this volume, editor J. Gayle Beck draws together, for the first time, the available knowledge about interpersonal factors in the anxiety disorders. The book begins with an overview of models and measures for conceptualizing and assessing interpersonal processes in the anxiety disorders. It then reviews the available literature on interpersonal processes pertaining to specific disorders, including childhood and adolescent anxiety disorders, social anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, panic disorder and agoraphobia, generalized anxiety disorder, and health anxiety. Throughout the book, clinical descriptions, etiological formulations, and information pertaining to comorbidity and treatment help to bridge the gap between clinical and research work. This groundbreaking book will appeal to everyone interested in anxiety disorders or interpersonal processes in psychopathology. ... Read more

Product Description
Social phobia is characterized by excessive anxiety or discomfort in situations where a person might feel judged or evaluated by others, including performance situations (e.g., being the center of attention, public speaking, working under observation, playing sports or music in front of an audience) and situations involving interpersonal contact with others (e.g., making small talk, meeting new people, dating). According to large-scale epidemiological studies, social phobia is one of the most prevalent psychological disorders. Although prevalence estimates vary, recent studies suggest that approximately 7% of Americans suffer from this disorder. In addition to the high percentage of people with symptoms meeting criteria for this disorder, many other individuals experience social anxiety or shyness to a lesser, but still impairing degree. Social phobia is also a common comorbid condition, often diagnosed along with other anxiety disorders.

Taken together, this information suggests that practitioners are likely to encounter patients displaying some degree of social anxiety, no matter what specialty service or setting they occupy. Although social anxiety is a widely encountered problem, there are few resources available to provide straightforward, accessible assessment and treatment information for practitioners. This book aims to fill that gap. Over the past 20 years, effective tools have been developed to identify and treat individuals with social anxiety. The current book will provide up-to-date information on the diagnosis, identification, conceptualization, and treatment of social anxiety and social phobia.

This book is aimed at practitioners who practice in a broad range of settings, from specialty clinics to general practice, as well as students. Existing books tend to focus on the psychopathology of social anxiety, address multiple disorders in one volume, or provide extensive and detailed protocols for treating this disorder. In contrast, this book is a more concise guide to identification and treatment that is accessible for the busy practitioner. It focuses specifically on social phobia and social anxiety, making it an attractive reference book for professionals who require clear, easy to follow guidelines on treatments for social anxiety. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting book, theoretically
Very interesting book for cognitive therapist. Framework is built, chapters on each anxiety disorder are clear and pertinent. Theoretically, this book helps to conceptualise a cognitive approach. But, on the other side, although some tools are offered, sometimes you ask yourself if what is advocated is fully related to day-to-day treatment. Chapters on GAD and panic disorder are really good. Chapter on OCD is less good, because too theoretical, less practical.

5-0 out of 5 stars Made My Day
I was planning an all day course for therapists on cognitive therapy for anxiety disorders when someone told me about Wells' book. It made my day or more accurately it made my day much easier. This book is clear inconceptualizing anxiety disorders with a cognitive model, illustrating themwith diagrams and leading the therapist to the logical steps in treatment.I found it helpful not only in teaching but also in treating individualpatients with anxiety. Any cognitive therapist will find this well thoughtout book a helpful source.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding guide to the treatment of anxiety disorders
This book is an excellent, state-of-the-art review and manual for the treatment of the major anxiety disorders. Wells provides clear, practical, and insightful examples of interventions in the treatment of generalized anxiety, panic, social phobia, health anxiety and ocd. This book will be helpful to clinicians who are new to cognitive-behavior therapy as well as therapists who are experienced in the model. The significant advances made by the groups at Oxford, Manchester, and the University of Pennsylvania are convincingly described here and important new applications are described. ... Read more
