Product Description

This unique volume gives readers a front-row seat at an exciting and crucial symposium.

Recent advances in theory and treatment have significantly increased our understanding of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Yet research on OCD generally falls in categories of either behavioral or biological, and rarely do the two meet. Concepts and Controversies in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder bridges this gap admirably. Featuring an international panel of 42 experts, this volume focuses in depth on—and presents opposing viewpoints to —the seven conceptual and practical disputes that characterize the field today:

- categorical versus dimensional perspectives on symptoms

- animal versus behavioral models

- single OCD entity versus OCD spectrum

- neuropsychiatric versus cognitive-behavioral models

- cognitive therapy versus exposure therapy

- self-directed versus therapist-directed treatment

- medication versus cognitive-behavioral therapy

These issues are presented in a debate format, with each side contributing a position paper on the topic, followed by a rebuttal from the opposite perspective. To further enrich the debate, timely chapters examine special areas such as sexual addictions, body dysmorphic disorder, trichotillomania, Tourette’s syndrome, and compulsive shopping in the context of OCD.

This level of discussion and argument, with its possibility for collaboration and integration, makes Concepts and Controveries of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder unique and productive reading for students, researchers, and therapists of all orientations as they design the next generation of theory and greater nuances of treatment.

Product Description
Under normal circumstances, anxiety is a biological warning system that enables a person to anticipate and avoid harm and failure. Recent advances in the physiology and pharmacology of the central nervous system, and technical advances (imaging in particular), have opened new avenues toward a better understanding of the biology of anxiety. Written by a renowned group of experts, Biology of Anxiety Disorders provides the most recent data on the neurobiology and pathophysiology of anxiety from a variety of perspectives. The book discusses recent advances in neuroimaging that have enhanced the study of anxiety such as measurement of cerebral blood flow and metabolic rate. The authors discuss the biology of serotonin receptors and relate these findings to a variety of anxiety disorders. The book reviews several kindling models and how they can be used to shed light on mechanisms, such as the induction of proto-oncogenes, that affect responsivity to panic-inducing stimuli.Biology of Anxiety Disorders also covers the peripheral physiological manifestations of anxiety, including recent findings on the physiological expression of anxiety disorders, and explores the relationship between these objective bodily changes and the subjective perception of these changes. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I Found the Book, Free Yourself from Anxiety, to Be Very Helpful
This book was recommended in the resources guide of another book I recently read. Apparently it is meant for people with anxiety problems like panic or OCD but I think it would be great for anyone who gets worried about things - like an interview or an exam. You could do breathing exercises and calm yourself down etc. It's also great for people who want to use the techniques to avoid anxiety recurring as in my case. I like that it is easy to read and the authors wrote the book in a user-friendly way. I recommend it to anyone trying to lower their stress or anxiety level.

5-0 out of 5 stars get to grips with your anxiety
a supportive and practical book for those who are ready to deal with their anxiety ..... as a long term sufferer I am encouraged by this brisk and well paced approach ...... the authors have a friendly and positive voice and the anecdotes from their practice support their thesis that you can indeed "free yourself from anxiety" by following their clearly laid out plan

1-0 out of 5 stars Untrustworthy
I would never trust this book because of the shady advertising practices. Spam comments on blogs to get more traffic is a sad and pathetic way to get yourself seen. If the authors don't have enough credentials or expertise to get themselves seen without using spam, I'd hate to see what the level of advice is like in the book.

Spammers should never be trusted. Nor should people who hire spammers. Just my opinion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!
The authors of this book seem to really understand what anxiety is all about. You get the feeling that they've heard all the excuses and have an answer for every one.So there's no more putting it off, the book makes you want to do all the things you know you ought to do, like eating healthily and getting exercise, and then it helps you understand how anxiety works and how it talks to you in your head and how you don't have to listen to it, which is really cool. It is easy to read and makes you realize you are not alone. If you want to understand your anxiety issues and learn how to work through them, or if you are a therapist/counselor you need to read this book.

Product Description
This book draws on fields as diverse as biochemistry, physiology, pharmacology, psychology, psychiatry, and ethology, to form a fascinating synthesis of information on the nature of fear and of panic and anxiety disorders.Dr. Marks offers both a detailed discussion of the clinical aspects of fear-related syndromes and a broad exploration of the sources and mechanisms of fear and defensive behavior. Dealing first with normal fear, he establishes a firm, scientific basis for understanding it.He then presents a thorough analysis of the development, symptoms and treatment of fear-related syndromes.Phobic and obsessive-compulsive disorders are examined in detail. The book is illustrated with examples of fear and defensive behavior in other living organisms.By drawing provocative analogies between animal and human behavior, it sheds new light on the origins of fears, phobias, and obsessive-compulsive problems, as well as on their treatment by drugs and psychological means. Clinical psychologists, ethologists, and anyone interested in the mechanisms of behavior will be fascinated by this authoritative study. The text is intriguing and informative, and the bibliography of over 2,100 entries makes it an invaluable reference. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A layman's guide
This book is a limited information know-how of panic disorder (PD) for the common man. As I was looking for an in-depth information to use in my M. Phil. thesis, it did not help me much. However, if you are looking for a layman's guide, this work is expected to help. It contains concise and to the point answers to the patients' FAQs.

Before buying this book i was hoping to find something new on this field. In general this book follows the same pattern as many others...too much information on the problem but few solutions and coping strategies. Its sure only for beginners that want to learn about their problem, but if you already know about it from other sources, 2/3 of the book are useless.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource!
I just finished Anxiety Free and loved it.Dr. Leahy provides "Anxiety Rule Books" which make understanding both the process and treatment of anxiety disorders remarkably clear. There is so much about facing anxiety that is counterintuitive and frightening- this book provides a clear path towards making changes.Highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great, helpful read!
I can highly recommend this book for anxiety sufferers and for therapists treating anxiety sufferers. One of the most helpful aspects of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for anxiety disorders is the way that the therapist helps the patient makes sense of the bewildering and often frightening symptoms. "Anxiety Free" does this without the pricetag of a therapy session.Anxiety Free highlights the common processes underlying all anxiety, and helps the reader understand the often humorous set of rules they are following which maintains their anxiety. Dr. Leahy also pulls together top strategies for dealing with anxiety from a wide range of treatments. The writing is accessible, the tone is humorous yet compassionate. A great, helpful read!

5-0 out of 5 stars The cutting edge of CBT in a 100% user friendly presentation
This book is a remarkable addition to the self-help literature.I highly recommend it to people suffering with anxiety and therapists alike.Dr. Leahy's "Anxiety Free" is more than a simple outline of popular and possible cognitive behavioral therapy techniques. The book uses innovative methods of presentation, e.g. "rulebooks" for anxiety, to bring the entire area of anxiety disorders into perspective. The cutting edge of cognitive and behavioral therapy is represented in a 100% user friendly manner. This book is beyond worth it, and it is essential reading in the treatment of anxiety problems.I'm recommending it to my patients. - Dennis Tirch PhD, Fellow Academy of Cognitive Therapy

2-0 out of 5 stars Not very useful
I know that the author a very important name in the CBT world. This fact made me buy this book. Despite the stellar endorsements by such people as Aaron Beck, in my opinion, this book is not an essential reading for someone who suffers from anxiety. It's mainly fails because it lacks a clear step-by-step strategy of dealing with anxiety.

Dr. Leahy tries to cover every possible anxiety variation: panic attack, social anxiety, GAD and so on. Each requires a different approach. However, his goal for writing this book a bit confusing. It looks like he meant it as a self-help book.If so, it's not deep enough. If I, say, suffer from Generalized Anxiety Disorder, I would much rather preferred a book dedicated to GAD alone, rather than a book that lists a brief introducation to every other anxiety disorders without giving me a clear roadmap on where to start, what's essential with my specific anxiety. Also, I'd require a book that emphasizes how to challenge the distorted thinking, which requires much more than a few pages. I felt lost in all the information without knowing what's essential.

The most helpful books on anxiety, by the way, already exist and it's very hard to top them: Anxiety Workbook by Bourne and Mind over Mood by Padesky. They cover everything you'll ever need: clear, practical andand useful.

Product Description
We frequently hear that we live in an age of anxiety, from 'therapy culture', the Atkins diet and child anti-depressants to gun culture and weapons of mass destruction. While Hollywood regularly cashes in on teenage anxiety through its Scream franchise, pharmaceutical companies churn out new drugs such as Paxil to combat newly diagnosed anxieties.
On Anxiety takes a fascinating, psychological plunge behind the scenes of our panic stricken culture and into anxious minds, asking who and what is responsible. Putting anxiety on the couch, Renata Salecl asks some much-needed questions: Is anxiety about the absence of authority or too much of it? Do the media report anxiety or create it? Are drugs a cure for anxiety or its cause? Is anxiety about being yourself or someone else, and is anxiety really the ultimate obstacle to happiness?
Drawing on vivid examples from films such as the X Files and Cyrano de Bergerac, drugs used on soldiers to combat anxiety, the anxieties of love and motherhood, and fake Holocaust memoirs, Renata Salecl argues that what really produces anxiety is the attempt to get rid of it.
Erudite and compelling, On Anxiety is essential reading for anyone interested in philosophy, psychology and the cultural phenomenon of anxiety today. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Lacanian Laughter
A lucid and elegant Lacanian reading of the related issues of anxiety in contemporay culture, covering the neurotic, psychotic, and perversive cases on topics of wide range. It doesn't offer long, detailed exposition on Lacan or Freud's theories themselves. However, the Lacanian lens casts quite insightful, thought-provoking comments on up-to-date social, cultural, clinical, legal issues.
An intellectual delight for those who are well-versed in Lacan or psychoanalysis. The reading experience is like listening to the talk of an old friend on her new refelctions

5-0 out of 5 stars Lacan in Action
Renata Salecl's book is a timely intervention in light of recent historical events. It was said that today's culture is one that no longer feels anxious--but with recent events, it is obvious that claim has to be reassessed. Salecl's book is just that timely intervention. She moves through many discourses, tackling examples of anxiety in art, popular culture, film, books on anxiety, etc. in order to elucidate the concept of anxiety. In the end she makes a very provocative and important argument for the necessity of anxiety in today's politics and culture. Lacan's seminar on anxiety (seminar 8) is not available in English, so this book is a very good resource for US Lacanians.

4-0 out of 5 stars All Lacanians are wierd
Lacanian writers, not writers who write about Lacan, but those who write in the mode of Lacan, I can list a few, of course there's Zizek, Darian Leader, Richard Boothby, and Salecl.Renata's Salecl's book on anxiety is a very good brief overview of how "anxiety" gets played out in a variety of situations, from war to the nike logo and ubiquity of "lifestyle choices".It's an enjoyable read and for those who want a solid application of the uses of "Big Other" and "Fantasy framework", this is the book to open as Salecl works these concepts in every chapter. One small peeve is that I wish Salecl pursued the interesting point about the "ideal ego" and "ego ideal" in relation to anxiety. But overall a very good book.Oh and my point about Lacanian inspired writers is that one should be prepared for a lot of "openess" in the text.Lacanian writers (I find) introduce arguments and makes points with the purpose of later refining them or using them in a different context (sometimes creating tensions in that the concept seems to get pulled in all directions.Zizek is a master of introducing a concept and then using it in so many contexts you begin to lose sight of the original intended meaning, and are awash in elasticity, plasticity, ephemerality, sliding signifiers youname it).Nothing is ever concluded or closed off, but explored and left open, not necessarily 'hanging' just open. That's the Lacanian Thing. ... Product Description
The treatment described in this Therapist Guide is specifically designed for adolescents with panic disorder and agoraphobia. Panic disorder often first appears in adolescence, making effective treatment for this age group a priority. Left untreated, panic disorder can severely impair an adolescent's development and functioning. It can put an adolescent at risk for depression and have consequences into adulthood.

The program was developed at the Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders at Boston University and targets patients ages 12-17. It is comprised of 12 sessions to be delivered over an 11-week period. Adolescents learn about the nature of panic and anxiety and how to challenge their panic thoughts. Exposure sessions help them face their fears and stop avoiding situations that cause heightened anxiety. An adaptation chapter addresses how to modify the program for intensive (8 day) treatment, as well as how to tailor the treatment to different ages. Each session includes an optional parent component and an appendix provides handouts for parents. The corresponding workbook is specifically designed for adolescent use, with easy to understand explanations and teen-friendly forms. ... Read more
