Product Description

5 Easy Pieces features five contributions, originally published in Nature and Science, demonstrating the massive impacts of modern industrial fisheries on marine ecosystems. Initially published over an eight-year period, from 1995 to 2003, these articles illustrate a transition in scientific thought—from the initially-contested realization that the crisis of fisheries and their underlying ocean ecosystems was, in fact, global to its broad acceptance by mainstream scientific and public opinion.

Daniel Pauly, a well-known fisheries expert who was a co-author of all five articles, presents each original article here and surrounds it with a rich array of contemporary comments, many of which led Pauly and his colleagues to further study. In addition, Pauly documents how popular media reported on the articles and their findings. By doing so, he demonstrates how science evolves. In one chapter, for example, the popular media pick up a contribution and use Pauly’s conclusions to contextualize current political disputes; in another, what might be seen as nitpicking by fellow scientists leads Pauly and his colleagues to strengthen their case that commercial fishing is endangering the global marine ecosystem. This structure also allows readers to see how scientists’ interactions with the popular media can shape the reception of their own, sometimes controversial, scientific studies.

In an epilog, Pauly reflects on the ways that scientific consensus emerges from discussions both within and outside the scientific community.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Freshwater Farming Tips
My brother has started a successful fish farm based on this book...and he's making very good money, what else can I say!

2-0 out of 5 stars too costly for too little information
I was extremely disappointed for something that purports to be the "complete guide".

In fact this book is a basic intro to the subject, with some pretty pictures...apparently what you are paying for.

Very disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT, Just Brilliant
Nick is a Genius.
He covers Many thing most people do not even think about. This is a vitally important "must read" book for anyone who want to get 20 years worth of practical realistic experience in a matter of days or weeks.
I recommend that you re-read this book several times like I am. I keep finding things the next time I read the book which did not "click" the previous time I looked.
Anyone investing in medium to large scale aquaponics will save tens of thousands of dollars at least with the advice given here.
I see so many of the mistakes explained here which we made when I first started in this industry 30 years ago.
Well done Nick

4-0 out of 5 stars Good enjoyable reading about aquaculture
This book is a basic guide to the beginner in the field and anyone just thinking to set up own pond.
To my view the weak part of this book is that it is way too general to make final decission based on information in this book. It could have been going in each chapter into more detail, examples etc.
What makes it good for reading is wery good structure of chapters, which lets anyone starting to think about aquaculture to capture the full range of aquacultures available. There are many usefull tips ranging from what to choose, what to check, what to avoid prior taking the shovel in hand and here I found it inspiring and usefull.
Written in easy language I found it a fine, joy reading. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
The core of a multibillion dollar sport fishing industry, tarpon and bonefish, two of the earth’s oldest creatures, are experiencing obvious and precipitous population decline. Experienced anglers in the Florida Keys suggest a drop of approximately 90-95 percent for the bonefish population over the last 65 years. Despite the economic value of the industry and scientific value of these ancient fish, very little information is available about their movements and migrations, population dynamics, life histories, and reproductive habits.

With contributions from some of the world’s leading experts, Biology and Management of the World Tarpon and Bonefish Fisheries synthesizes existing scientific literature, presents new perspectives, and introduces original scientific research to guide fishery management and conservation efforts for building sustainable fisheries. Divided into five sections, the book begins with an overview of the state of the world’s fisheries for tarpon and bonefish. The second section reviews the biology and life history dynamics of these fish with contributions on conservation genetics, reproductive biology and early life development, as well as resolving gaps in evolutionary lineage and taxonomy. Covering population dynamics and resource ecology, the third section discusses migratory patterns and the use of tagging. Highlighting the lore and appeal of these fascinating sport fish, the book concludes by introducing a myriad of proposals designed to improve fishery sustainability by conducting census, enforcing catch-and-release programs, and supporting science-based management decision making.

Promoting a better understanding of the biological and fishery management issues that are paramount to the sustainable future of these valuable fishery resources, Biology and Management of the World Tarpon and Bonefish Fisheries provides a foundation for discussion and broad communication about the past present and future of these magnificent sport fish. ... Product Description
Aquaculture - the farming of fish and aquatic plants - has become the world's fastest-growing food production sector, even as the amount of wild fish caught in our seas and freshwaters declines. From fish foods and pharmaceuticals to management of entire aquatic ecosystems, acquaculture is truly changing the face of the waters. Increase growth, however, brings increased risk, and aquaculture now lies at a crossroads. One direction points toward the giant strides in productivity, industry concentration, and product diversification. Another direction points toward the dangers of environmental degradation and the marginalization of small fish farmers. Yet another direction invites aquaculture to champion the poor and provide vital environmental services to stressed aquatic environments. Changing the Face of the Waters offers a cutting-edge analysis of the critical challenges facing aquaculture, balancing aquaculture's role in economic growth with the need for sound management of natural resources. The book also provides guidance on sustainable aquaculture by evaluating alternative development pathways, placing particular emphasis on the application of lessons from Asia to Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America. Aimed at policy makers, planners, and scientists, this book provides a comprehensive frame of reference for orienting ideas and initiatives in this dynamic industry. ... Read more

Product Description
This book examines the development of property rights in marine fisheries, and asks whether the obstacles to their continued development cannot be more easily overcome. The contributed chapters generally focus on the consequences of a lack of property rights of commercial and small-time fishers globally. National governments have recognized that the absence of such rights coupled with the technological advances in commerical fishing have resulted in widespread economic and environmental problems (e.g., overfishing, bycatching, highgrading, increased physical dangers, and lower profits). The most significant solution to these problems, and the predominate concern of this book, is the institution of Individual Transferable Quotas (ITQs), also known as Individual Fishing Quotas (IFQs). These are national and global policies, public- and private-sector managed allocations of the amount of various species of fish, at certain qualities can be harvested at particular times by fishers. ... Product Description
The primary purpose of this book is to provide a range of tested BASIC programs, which are useful for solving some of the problems frequently encountered in fisheries science and related resource assessment disciplines.Taken together, the ``package'' of programs may be considered to be a system, hence the name Fisheries Science Applications Systems (FSAS) which has been adopted as the title of the package.

In the first chapter, an overview of the FSAS system and its components is presented. The second chapter is a tutorial on data entry, data editing, and the use of a typical application program. The remaining text summarizes each application program, describing the analyses it performs and providing citations to the fisheries literature.

The programs are considered to be of potential value to the practicing fisheries scientist who has access to a personal computer. In addition, they will be of value to fisheries scientists and managers in the developing world, who have access to minimal computing facilities and peripheral equipment.
