Related collections include a fruticetum (from the Latin frutex, meaning shrub), and a viticetum, a collection of vines. More commonly today, an arboretum is a botanical garden containing living collections of woody plants intended at least partly for scientific study. An arboretum specializing in growing conifers is known as a pinetum. Egyptian Pharaohs planted exotic trees and cared for them; they brought ebony wood from the Sudan, pine and cedar from Syria. Hatshepsut's expedition to Punt returned bearing thirty-one live frankincense trees, the roots of which were carefully kept in baskets for the duration of the voyage; this was the first recorded attempt to transplant foreign trees. It is reported that Hatshepsut had these trees planted in the courts of her Deir el Bahri mortuary temple complex. The term 'arboretum' was first used in an English publication by John Claudius Loudon in 1833 in The Gardener's Magazine but the concept was already long-established by then. The first arboretum was the Arboretum Trsteno, near Dubrovnik in Croatia. The date of its founding is unknown, but it was already in existence by 1492, when a 15 m (50 ft) span aqueduct to irrigate the arboretum was constructed; this aqueduct is still in use. It was created by the prominent local Gueti/Gozze family. It suffered two major disasters in the 1990s but its two unique and ancient Oriental Planes remained standing. The arboretum of Greifswald Botanic Garden, GermanyCommenting on Loddiges' famous Hackney Botanic Garden arboretum, begun in 1816, and opened free to the public for educational benefit every Sunday...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=338454 ... Chapters: Cave Hill Cemetery, Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest, Lexington Cemetery, Boone County Arboretum, University of Kentucky Arboretum, Nannine Clay Wallis Arboretum, Kentucky Horse Park Arboretum. Not illustrated. Excerpt: Cave Hill Cemetery - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Smyser MemorialCave Hill was chartered in 1848 on what was William Johnston's Cave Hill Farm, then a rural property some distance east of Louisville. Johnston, who died in 1798, had built the first brick house in Louisville on the grounds circa 1788. City officials had purchased part of the land in the 1830s in anticipation of building a railroad through it, and a workhouse was built there. The railroad was built elsewhere, and the land was leased to local farmers. In 1846, Mayor Frederick A. Kaye began investigating the possibility of developing a garden-style cemetery on the grounds, a popular concept at the time. Hartford, Connecticut civil engineer Edmund Francis Lee was hired, who planned a cemetery with winding paths, graves across the tops of hills, and lakes and ponds in the valleys. The Cave Hill Cemetery Co. was chartered in February 1848, and the cemetery was dedicated on July 25, 1848. Reverend E. P. Humphrey delivered the dedicatory address, and elaborated on the idea of the garden cemetery, noting, among other things, that ". . .Reason and taste suggest that should be decorated appropriately by the beautiful productions of our great Creator. . ." Before the era of large municipal parks, it was common for cities to promote a garden cemetery as a green oasis and recreation destination, and Louisville was no exception. This largely ended with the opening of Cherokee Park in 1892. After administrators sold several acres of land for the burial of Union sold... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=2340516 ... Read more

Rushmore, a prominent New York lawyer, during an expedition in 1885. At first, the project of carving Rushmore was undertaken to increase tourism in the Black Hills region of South Dakota. Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The Denbigh Experimental Forest 636 acres (2.6 km²) is an arboretum and experimental forest operated by the Forest Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. It is located 15 miles (24 km) west of Towner, North Dakota. The forest contains about 30 species of woody plants, labeled and planted in a park-like setting, including Scots Pine, Ponderosa Pine, Siberian Larch, Black Hills Spruce, Elaeagnus, and Rocky Mountain Juniper. Wildlife includes deer, wild turkeys, porcupines, elk, and sometimes moose. The forest is also popular with birdwatchers. The forest was established in 1931 on a site extensively over-plowed and overgrazed during the early part of the 20th century, leaving wind-blown sand dunes and economic hardship. It was originally envisioned as part of a grand plan by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt to plant a 100 mile (160 km) wide "shelterbelt zone" from North Dakota to north Texas to reduce wind erosion and eliminate dust storms, as well as provide local employment in the Great Depression via a jobs program. Proponents envisioned a forest as large as 480,000 acres (1900 km²) around the forest's current site. This grand vision never came to pass, and the forest was established with the more modest goals of determining which types of shelterbelt trees would grow well in the northern Great Plains, which seed sources within species are best adapted for the region, and which methods of tree establishment are most effective for shelterbelts. The Forest Service acquired 40 acres (160,000 m) of the 636 in 1931, and the State of North Dakota...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=2224669 ... Read more

Chapters: Arboretum of the University of Central Florida, Alfred B. Maclay Gardens State Park, John C. Gifford Arboretum, Deerfield Beach Arboretum, Palm and Cycad Arboretum, Palma Sola Botanical Park. Not illustrated. Excerpt:Arboretum at the University of Central FloridaThe Arboretum of the University of Central Florida is located on the main campus of the University of Central Florida in Orlando, Florida, USA. Covering 80 acres .32 km), it contains more than 600 species of plants, including more than 100 bromeliads, in cultivated gardens. Due to the hurricanes of 2005, the Arboretum is receiving a major restructuring that will lead to new collections arranged by geographical area. The new design also entails picnic tables, running trails, and a disc golf course. Established by President Trevor Colbourn in 1983, The Arboretum began with approximately 12 acres (49,000 m) of a disturbed pond pine community on the east side of the developed part of campus, east of the present biology building. In 1988, at President Altmans direction, the University expanded the Arboretum to include a 5-acre (20,000 m) Cypress dome, an oak hammock of about 3 acres (12,000 m), and about 15 acres (61,000 m) of sand pine and Florida scrub, connected to the original Arboretum by Sabal palmetto community and increasingly rare Florida longleaf pine flatwoods. During this time the director of the Arboretum was Dr. Henry O. Whittier. He would remain director of the Arboretum until his retirement 2003, when Dr. Whittier was replaced as director by Dr. Martin Quigley. In 2004, Hurricane Charley decimated the pond pine community on the original 12 acres (49,000 m) destroying most of the canopy. This area is currently being restored to its original state by the UCF Environmental... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1799872 ... Read more
