Editorial Review

Product Description

Susan Alling Gregg presents a sophisticated model for the transition from hunter-gatherer societies tosettled agricultural communities in prehistoric Europe. She proposes that farmers and foragers must have encountered each other and interacted in a variety of ways for over a millennium as farming systems spread throughout the continent. Several variations of subsistence developed, such as foraging and hunting for part of the year and farming for the rest, or cooperative exchange arrangements between hunter-gatherers and farmers throughout the year.

Gregg examines anthropological, ecological, and archaeological dimensions of prehistoric population interaction. She then examines the ecological requirements of both crops and livestock and, in order to identify an optimal farming strategy for Early Neolithic populations, develops a computer simulation to examine various resource mixes. Turning to the foragers, she models the effects that interaction with the farmers would have had on the foragers' subsistence-settlement system.

Supporting her model with archaeological, ecological, and ethnobotanical evidence from southwest Germany, Gregg shows that when foragers and farmers occur contemporaneously, both need to be considered before either can be understood. Theoretically and methodologically, her work builds upon earlier studies of optimal diet and foraging strategy, extending the model to food-producing populations. The applicability of Gregg's generalized model for both wild and domestic resources reaches far beyond her case study of Early Neolithic Germany; it will interest both Old and New World archaeologists.

5-0 out of 5 stars My tough to please dad loved this book
I bought this for my dad who is a retired schoolteacher and very tough to please, especially when it comes to anything history-related.He loves learning about American Indians, especially those on the east coast. He mentioned that it's so difficult to find good, interesting, and factual information on these cultures because they were wiped out much earlier than the western indians, and also left much less of a written record.I even took him to the American Indian museum in DC and he had a lukewarm reception - he said there was too much focus on the western indians and even the gift shop didn't have any books of interest. I went online and did a search for scholarly publications on the subject and this book came up.I was elated when I found a copy on Amazon and took a chance - he's never happy. To my surprise, the text book format was just his style and he studied it night after night.Years later, he still rereads chapters. It's actually still sitting on his bookshelf in his living room for easy reference --- it was a hit.If you're into this niche or know someone who is, I say go for it! ... Editorial Review

Product Description

This volume contains three studies that trace the history of tourism in Yellowstone National Park through material remains discovered in both terrestrial and underwater archeological sites. A research approach with an archeological foundation opens new avenues of inquiry not available by using historical documents alone. Incorporating archeological materials into our interpretations of historical tourism in Yellowstone can help counter research biases that hamper use of a sometimes-fragmentary archival record. Archeology gives voice to people otherwise missing from written history, and therefore give us the broadest view of the past.

These chapters draw together the fascinating historical archeology of Yellowstone National Park into a single volume linked by a common research framework, the archeology of tourism. While oftentimes treated as separate and unrelated resources, historical archeological sites on land, underwater, and in the liminal zone in between, connect in Yellowstone through a shared history and a universal purpose. Situating these sites within the context of a larger tourist infrastructure allows us to broaden our interpretation and enriches the stories the sites have to tell.

Product Description
Italy has the world's richest concentration of archaeological and architectural sites which, with its museums, makes the country the most extraordinary repository of works of art. From the enigmas of the pre-classical sites and artifacts, the beauty and serene power of Greek and Roman work, the massive yet beautiful Romanesque basilicas shading into Gothic, the glories of the Renaissance and its exaggerated modifications in Mannerism, the restrained extravagance of the Baroque to the cold elegance of the Neoclassical, Italy holds an incomparable storehouse of wonders-all of which are covered in detail in this major new work. Based on the author's 40 years of first-hand research, travel, and study in Italy, this magisterial six-volume illustrated work lists and describes, region by region, with authoritative texts and often accompanied by photographs, Italy's vast array of classical monuments, churches, museums, monasteries, cathedrals, palaces, villas, and fortresses, describing their architectural features, artistic contents and historical significance. The first five volumes cover more than 3,500 sites spanning 96 provinces. The sixth volume functions as a cultural encyclopedia of Italian architecture and art, providing biographical sketches of architects, artists and patrons, major themes and frequently discussed subjects, artistic styles, technical, architectural and artistic terms, techniques and materials, as well as relevant Italian words and expressions. ... Product Description

Combining anthropology, archeology, and evolutionary theory, Paul E. Minnis develops a model of how tribal societies deal with severe food shortages. While focusing on the prehistory of the Rio Mimbres region of New Mexico, he provides comparative data from the Fringe Enga of New Guinea, the Tikopia of Tikopia Island, and the Gwembe Tonga of South Africa.

Minnis proposes that, faced with the threat of food shortages, nonstratified societies survive by employing a series of responses that are increasingly effective but also are increasingly costly and demand increasingly larger cooperative efforts. The model Minnis develops allows him to infer, from evidence of such factors as population size, resource productivity, and climate change, the occurrence of food crises in the past. Using the Classic Mimbres society as a test case, he summarizes the regional archeological sequence and analyzes the effects of environmental fluctuations on economic and social organization. He concludes that the responses of the Mimbres people to their burgeoning population were inadequate to prevent the collapse of the society in the late twelfth century.

In its illumination of the general issue of responses to food shortages, Social Adaptation to Food Stress will interest not only archeologists but also those concerned with current food shortages in the Third World. Cultural ecologists and human geographers will be able to derive a wealth of ideas, methods, and data from Minnis's work.
