Product Description
Every great architect offers an original vision, one that synthesizes and then transcends all that he or she has learned. Roland Terry's career follows that archetypal mode, yet Terry occupies a unique place in the Northwest architectural tradition. The elements that define his originality are subtle, a fusion of classic Northwest Modernist traditions leavened with a warm yet cosmopolitan sophistication, one that grew organically out of his education, his background in the thriving Seattle art and architecture communities of the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, and his experiences while traveling and living abroad.Poised between modern functionalism and rich traditionalism, Roland Terry's work embraces the best of old and new. His body of residential work in Seattle and elsewhere illuminates the subtle depth, power, and completeness of his design talents. He had a matchless skill at integrating his ideas with the needs of his clients, particularly with regard to interior design. As is evident in the book, these are houses made for the ages.Renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly wrote of Terry's work, 'whenever I've visited a Roland Terry house it's been like visiting Matisse's chapel or Renoir's studio - one of those special days that you remember forever'.This is not to suggest that Terry's commercial work pales in comparison. On the contrary: from the earliest incarnations of Seattle's Canlis Restaurant in the late 1940s through the myriad restaurants, shops, hotels, and offices designed in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, Terry created a striking and original body of institutional buildings and interiors, including the original Nordstrom flagship store in downtown Seattle, the Half Moon Hotel in Montego Bay, Jamaica, the Kahala Hilton (now Mandarin Oriental) Hotel in Honolulu. A number of these groundbreaking commercial projects are included here to illustrate the remarkable diversity of architectural and decorative approaches that Terry and his partners and associates employed in creating comfortable, user-friendly public buildings. As is true with his residences, Terry never chased fads or trends in his commercial designs.Instead, he sought the timeless, essential, and complete response to the given design problem - and he did so with subtlety and style. During Roland Terry's long and eventful career, spanning more than half a century, it was his ability to see the whole picture, to envision a complete design embracing site, building, and interiors that remains unique to this day in the Northwest. Couple that singular talent with a rigorous attention to detail and a remarkable ability to integrate art into architecture - and you have an American original of the Northwest genre. ... Read more

Product Description
Pirro Ligorio (1510-1583), an Italian architect and antiquarian who designed the Casino of Pius IV and large portions of the gardens of the Villa d Este, has long been a notoriously elusive subject because of his daunting erudition and because his notebooks and drawings are in collections scattered throughout the world. In this book David R. Coffin, one of America's leading experts on Renaissance architecture and landscape architecture, mobilizes all available published and unpublished materials to offer the first comprehensive account of Ligorio's life and multifaceted career. Coffin traces the unfolding of Ligorio's life from his early years in Naples, to his work in Rome, where he served several popes and pored over Ancient ruins, through his residency in Ferrara as court antiquarian. In addition to illuminating Ligorio's relationship to his patrons, Coffin sheds new light on Ligorio's famed map of ancient Rome, a masterpiece that bears witness to Ligorio's cartographic skills, his erudition, and his lifelong fascination with the eternal city. Copiously illustrated, Coffin s biography includes a checklist of Ligorio's drawings. It will be of interest to architectural historians, art historians, and all those involved with the study of Rome and of the classical heritage. ... Read more

Product Description
The Yugoslavian architect Jozé Plecnik followed what he believed to be a coherent language of architecture in trying to "build a better world through architecture." He cannot be classified in terms of any of the movements - modernism, classicism, secessionism, eclecticism, regionalism, and the like that characterize the turbulent aesthetic tendencies of this century. Instead, as these essays by leading European scholars and the 300 accompanying illustrations of his work show, Plecnik's long career offers an invaluable example of the richness and diversity of early modern architecture.

Product Description
Like many young Dutch architects who have either worked for Rem Koolhaas or followed in his footsteps, Winka Dubbeldam situates architecture in a larger context of urbanism, society, and technology. Her inventive and colorful work addresses a variety of scales and programs, and displays a mastery of the latest computer techniques in rendering and animation. The results are beautifully illustrated in this lavishly produced large-format monograph, the first on her work.

Winka Dubbeldam, Architect presents an impressive selection of this emerging designer's built and unbuilt works through photographs, drawings, computer renderings, and full project descriptions. Among the projects included are the Cristinerose Art Gallery in New York City; an urban design for the Mojave Desert; a competition entry for a port terminal in Yokohama; a redevelopment of the souks in Lebanon; and a redesign of the facade and entry for the Art Academy in Rotterdam. An introduction by Michael Speaks and an essay by Dubbeldam accompany the work. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Winka Dubbledam's (Con-Tex-Ture)
Winka Dubbledam's book Con-Tex-Ture is a clear well organized portfolio of her designs. Each project starts with simple concept diagrams that are carried throughout the coverage of the section. She is the latest architectof the "Dutch Explosion" who has worked for OMA, Tschumi, Holland Eisenman. A very interesting project is a ferry terminal modeled on theexpansion and contraction of a rubber band. The form of this building is amobius strip with program intelligently worked into it. While the majorityof her works are unbuilt and represented with computer renderings, thebuilt projects have unique expression. I highly recommend this book forthose curious about the possible direction of the architecture to come. ... Read more

Product Description

From the earliest architects in Minnesota, who came just prior to the Civil War and had learned their trade through apprenticeship, to the arrival of formally trained architects in the late 1880s, and from the creation of the University of Minnesota’s school of architecture in 1912 to the present-day firms and individuals practicing across the state, Minnesota is home to an appreciable legacy of architects whose influence spreads far beyond the state’s borders.

Minnesota Architects presents, for the first time, a wide-ranging biographical dictionary of the many architects who were born or worked for a significant time in Minnesota. Each of the more than 250 biographies contains the architect’s era of work, educational and professional experience, and a description of his or her most notable buildings. Many of the architects included in this book are relatively obscure or unknown, while others are considered stars of the profession, such as Cass Gilbert, Clarence Johnston, “Cap” Turner, and Edwin Lundie. Noted Minnesota architectural historian Alan K. Lathrop has drawn on an incredible range of sources—from censuses, city directories, and obituaries to interviews and genealogical resources—to create an authoritative and unprecedented survey of Minnesota’s architects.

Heavily illustrated with photos of the architects’ work, Minnesota Architects is designed to be an easy-to-navigate resource for preservationists, historians, students of architecture, and anyone interested in the men and women of Minnesota’s rich architectural legacy.

Product Description

Jean-Michel Basquiat was barely out of his teens when he rocketed to the center of New York's art scene. He was 27 when he died of a heroin overdose. Always controversial, Basquiat is now established as a major contemporary painter whose unique work continues to enthrall.

Jean-Michel Basquiat: A Biography covers the artist's Brooklyn childhood, his teenage years as a homeless graffiti painter, and his rise through the art world. Along with a discussion of his life and work, including his use of Afrocentric themes, the book offers background on related contemporary art movements. Special attention is given to Basquiat's friendship with Keith Haring and collaborations with Andy Warhol. The book also explores Basquiat's difficult relations with gallery owners and other authority figures, his problems with drug use, and his early death. Product Description
Marston was instrumental in establishing Pasadena as a winter resort and then as a thriving community. He and his firm designed 1000 projects, many of which still survive, including cottages and additions to resort hotels, notable commercial and civic buildings such as the Pacific Asia Museum, and the earliest bungalow court. His residential designs span the range of styles from the Arts and Crafts through English Tudor and Monterey Colonial to, most importantly, Mediterranean Revival. This is an important addition to the literature of California's Golden Age of architecture. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Scholarly study rich with anecdotes -
This book, with Foreward by Dr. Kevin Starr, California State Librarian, is not only a scholarly architectural study of 5 decades of productivity, but also also semi-biographical history with its treasure of anecdotes on the identities and backgrounds of the clients who commissioned these residential and commercial buildings in the architectural wonderland that was Southern California in the pre-World War II period. This book was a wonderful read!

4-0 out of 5 stars Pasadena's Quinte
A close contemporary of George Washington Smith, Marston's work in the first three decades of this century perfectly mirrors Pasadena's development as a visually rich and cohesive community. Tuttle has brought back to life the author of buildings that have given pleasure to several generations and has written a graceful history of the man and his place. ... Read more
