Product Description
Carter Wiseman presents an original, readable, and literate overview of the major figures, influential movements, and landmark buildings that have defined American architecture over the past hundred years. In a survey that is "as good . . . as anyone is likely to write . . . accurate in its facts, wise and fair in its judgments"(New York Times), he focuses to a large extent on architecture's makers--the commanding figures who by force of personality and sheer artistic ability indelibly influenced its progress: Louis Sullivan, Frank Lloyd Wright, Philip Johnson, I. M. Pei, Robert Venturi, Louis Kahn, Frank Gehry. The triumph of modernism; the growth of architectural preservation; the eclipse of the practical arts by money, theory, and abstraction; and the uncertain future of architecture in a country that celebrates both individualism and community are just some of the issues addressed in this highly praised work. Originally published in hardcover under the title Shaping a Nation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For students of architecture and highly recommended
Twentieth-Century American Architecture: The Buildings And Their Makers surveys the major figures, influential movements, and landmark buildings that have identified and defined the American architecture over the past century. Carter Wiseman's informative text is enhanced with photographs as he focuses on the architects whose personalities and abilities indelibly influenced architectural progress. These figures range from Louis Sullivan Frank Lloyd Wright, and Philip Johnson, to I.M. Pei, Robert Venturi, and Louis Kahan. Twentieth-Century American Architecture is an impressive, authoritative, narrative history that is "must" reading for students of architecture, and highly recommended, accessible reading for the non-specialist general reader with an interest in the development of American architectural trends and the men behind them. ... Product Description
American Architecture introduces the reader to the major developments that shaped the American-built environment from before the Europeans to the present, from the everyday vernacular to the high style of aspiration. Leland M. Roth describes the impact of changes in conceptual imagery, style, building technology, landscape design, and town-planning theory throughout the nation's history. Based on his acclaimed and influential Concise History of American Architecture (1980), this new book is double the length with twice as many illustrations, featuring expanded coverage of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, regional styles, and contemporary buildings and architects. In ten chapters with 612 illustrations, he provides a full, reliable, and up-to-date description, analysis, and interpretation of American buildings and their architects. A well-written, easy to read chronology of American Architecture

5-0 out of 5 stars great book about American architecture
I'm taking Leland Roth's American Architecture class. I was worried about having to use his book for the class, but it turns out to be a very well written, interesting look at the history of American Architecture. Chapters are laid out in a well thought out manner and the pictures and drawings make for a more engaging read. I highly recommend this book for anyone who would like to know more about the built environment around them.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Architectural Reference Staple
If you are seriously interested in architecure then this should be a staple of your library. Whether an architecturtal student or a professional this book is a most. It it well written in the text and superbly highlighted with examples of photographs and sketches.

As a student in architectural school this was a valuable tool for studies and design ideas for projects. As a professional I would be lying if I said that I never pull it off my bookshelf.

This is not a book for simple or light reading. It is a reference book that belongs in any architectural interested person's library.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Guru for History of Architecture.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful
This is a wonderful book that extensively covers the architecture of buildings in New York, from past to present. Full of interesting background information. I can recommend this book to anyone that is interested in New York architecture. Unfortunately, photographs are kept to an essential minimum. Other than that, it was everyting I hoped for.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good book for a visitor to NYC
I bought this book a few days before my first visit to New York City. However, just reading very first part of this book gave me good knowledge of both history and architectures of NYC.

This book starts with the bornof New York City in 17th century, and covers many famous (and not sofamous) architectures with about 200 photos taken by the author.Itcovers Georgian influence of 18th Century, Greek revival of 19th century, the Chicago school...etc. The Art Deco Skyscrapers, such as the EmpireState building and the Chrysler building are well described.A wholechapter is devoted to Rockefeller Center. The history of MOMA (Museum ofModern Art) is interesting...

For me, this book seems to have somesmall shortcomings. This book lacks "up to date" information.(This revised edition was first published in 1994.) Also, as a fan of FrankLloyd Wright, I hope Guggenheim Museum have been covered more. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Castles: Their Construction and History by Sidney Toy
Castles: Their Construction and History by Sidney Toy gives details and floor-plans of many castle. Well written, with many illustrations, very useful for student of castle details. Recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars Could be Better
This is unfortunately another book on castles which spends more time describing details rather than explaining or synthesizing. I am looking for a book which shows how castle building evolved, and which makes use of illustrations - not prose - to describe the details. I would say the text in this book can be cut by 80% if well constructed diagrams replace the lengthy descriptions. The remaining 20% would constitute the interesting part of this book. Not that it would be sufficient to understand the history.

Can anyone write something like that? Although this one is better than others, none comes close to be an interesting study. Maybe a single author can't cut it, and both an architect and a historian need to be involved.

5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless Work
This book was written in the 1930's but it is indeed a timeless record of castles from BC to the age of fortifications.I first thought that this was too old of a book but after reading it, it is clearly a great castle book. The real treasure is that it was compiled before Hitler bombed the crap out of Europe. It is chronilogical. It is referenced perfectly. The illustrations include floor plans with scales and north arrows.Building sections keyed to the floor plans.Renderings and photographs keyed to the text.Sidney takes you thru all the different building types and features that make a castle. My favorite is the "Keep".The text is very easy to follow.I was amazed at Sidney's gift of describing without the aid of photographs and drawings castle configurations.I recommend this book to anyone who wants a book that gets to the core of the subject of castles.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just the facts.
There is no fluff and no romanticizing. This book is just plain hows and whys on castle construction and their evolution from wooden stockades to stone fortresses. It examines the changes in defenses as warfare evolved. It is dry reading, but this is bare bones information with no fantasizing....just what I wanted.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes too technical, but very helpful!
I bought this book because, well to put it plainly, I have always wanted to design a castle of my own.Having no real talent for architecture, I thought I'd see how others had done it before, and why they made thedecisions they did. This book does a lot for the novice who wants to learnthese things, but does so with enough illustrations to keep the readersinterest through the text.I can see why another reviewer said it wouldmake a good textbook -- it reads like one, and provides quite theeducation!

Add it to a military history collection, a chivalric textscollection, or to your Lego room for the next time you want a more powerfulcastle than the kit suggests (but, putting little lego men heads on pikesat the gates may be going overboard). ... Read more

Product Description
The discipline of architecture depends on the transmission in space and time of accumulated experiences, concepts, rules, and models. From the invention of the alphabet to the development of ASCII code for electronic communication, the process of recording and transmitting this body of knowledge has reflected the dominant information technologies of each period. In this book Mario Carpo discusses the communications media used by Western architects, from classical antiquity to modern classicism, showing how each medium related to specific forms of architectural thinking.Carpo highlights the significance of the invention of movable type and mechanically reproduced images. He argues that Renaissance architectural theory, particularly the system of the five architectural orders, was consciously developed in response to the formats and potential of the new printed media. Carpo contrasts architecture in the age of printing with what preceded it: Vitruvian theory and the manuscript format, oral transmission in the Middle Ages, and the fifteenth-century transition from script to print. He also suggests that the basic principles of "typographic" architecture thrived in the Western world as long as print remained our main information technology. The shift from printed to digital representations, he points out, will again alter the course of architecture. ... Read more

Product Description
The first part of the book examines the developments that originated in central Italy. It then goes on to discuss the majestic complexes of the Republican era, and the Augustan buildings that culminated in the planning of the Roman Forum. The book explains how the Romans successfully developed and exploited a revolutionary building material called opus caementicium, a composite of stone and mortar. This material made it possible for them to effectively develop new forms of structures, such as amphitheatres, public bath-houses, villas, basilicas, and markets, which were to become essential features of many regions. The author explores Roman architecture in such diverse areas as Thessalonica, Ephesus, Constantinople, Nimes, Verona, and Pompeii, with an overview of developments in southern Italy and the provinces. He also considers the later era of ancient Rome, where key buildings provide powerful examples of the complex phenomenon of Imperial Rome. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A pictorial "Ferrari" of history of architecture books
A part of the series History of World Architecture originally published by Electa in Italian in 1971-7 under a general editorship of Pier Luigi Nervi, it was translated to English and published by Abrams in 1971-80 in b&w only, but at 10 x 11 1/4 inches. Subsequently, the series was reedited, shrunk to 8 5/7 x 9 1/2 inches, and published by Electa / Rizzoli in 1985-9 with a few color photos added including each front cover. In the early 2000's, the series was reissued by Phaidon unchanged except for the front cover photo. It is a pictorial "Ferrari" of history of architecture books. Almost every page contains one or - usually - more than one illustration as photo, plan, section, elevation, axonometric view, etc. of the highest quality. They depict the best examples of topical architecture covering the most significant ones. The text was written by one of the best experts in the field. While relatively concise, it is still comprehensive and complete enough even for students of architecture.
PUBLISHER'S SYNOPSIS:
(326 black and white illustrations except the Abrams' edition having 416 illustrations, including 95 reconstructions, diagrams, and floor plans)
This volume begins with a comparison between the Parthenon and the Pantheon, whose simplicity and dignity represented a new level of sophistication in architecture based on a system of vaults and cement construction. The first part of the book examines the practices that originated in central Italy, the great complexes of the Republican era, and the projects of the Augustan age, culminating in the layout of the Forum. This is followed by analysis of the construction method known as opus caementicium, with examples of works from the complex of Trajan's Market to projects realized by Hadrian. The author goes on to consider the Rome of late antiquity, where key buildings provide powerful examples of the complex phenomenon of Imperial Rome. The book also discusses Roman architecture in such diverse areas as Thessalonica, Ephesus, Constantinople, Nimes, Verona and Pompeii, with an overview of developments in southern Italy and the provinces. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good Survey of American Architecture
Allthought not the best book ever written on American Architecture (Learning from Las Vegas, etc), it does provide a good overview of the evolution of architecture in America from the functionality of house formsin the early colonial times to asthetic forms of the 20th century.Thebook focuses on the regional influences which dictated the building formsof the early periods from materials to climate, which are often overlookedin broader surveys. Today, there are more than twenty complete zodiacs in Washington, D.C., each one pointing to an extraordinary mystery. David Ovason, who has studied these astrological devices for ten years, now reveals why they have been placed in such abundance in the center of our nation's capital and explains their interconnections. His richly illustrated text tells the story of how Washington, from its foundation in 1791, was linked with the zodiac, with the meaning of certain stars, and with a hidden cosmological symbolism that he uncovers here for the first time.

Fascinating and thoroughly researched, The Secret Architecture of Our Nation 's Capital is an engrossing book that raises provocative questions and otters complex insights into the meanings behind the mysterious symbols in Washington. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars mediocre
This book was okay and had most of the basic information. After the first 4 chapters I got bored. I guess I'm looking for more in depth information and not something I can find in any book I pick up.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very hard to follow...
Honsetly only read through the first few chapters. It was difficult to follow....the author jumped back and forth between timelines. If you can follow it, I'm sure there are some good facts there....but I couldn't keep up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Facts on the Ground, Facts in the Sky -- But the Interpretation!
Very esoteric and a constant intellectual challenge. The more knowledge of astronomy and astrological lore one has, the easier the book will be. For readers willing to study, it is ever intriguing, Ovason details, and provides important documentation for his argument which is, in essence, that the development of the design and erection of structures in Washington, D.C. was and is according to an astronomically oriented plan, and has been in the hands of Masons through most of its history. The author assures readers that he is not a Mason. I lived in DC for a decade and have confirmed the correctness of his architectural and compositional observations; his interpretation of course, is open to debate. In other words, the facts on the ground and in the sky, and even in the archives all check out -- it's his interpretation of them I have reservations about. For instance, it should be no surprise that astronomy and even astrology were important to agrarian societies, but it's quite a leap to say that they (i.e., Freemasons) therefore were secretly adoring Isis!!

By the way, you can bet your bottom Continental Dollar that Dan Brown (or his wife -- the "researcher"!) ransacked this book as he wrote The Solomon Key.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing book!
This is one of the most interesting books I"ve ever read, being from Washington DC I didn't know the history of Foggy Bottom and other areas, what they were like in the 1700s and 1800s, so I couldn't put it down. There are illustrations and the writing is very creative and interesting, I just loved it. AA++

5-0 out of 5 stars accolades from adelaide australia
Picked up this book browsing at the recent publications tableat the Society for Architectural Historians of Australia & New Zealand conference, and ended up late for the next session of papers!Despite its rather drab cover, it achieves just what editor Keith Eggener sets out to do - assembling essays of 'significant scholarship...that are concise, lively, accessible and engaging.'The ambitious breadth of topics doesn't in any waycompromise the rigour of the selection, and there is a great mix of familiar writers and new ones (at least for those of us in the Antopides who struggle to keep up with what's going on on the rest of the world).Liked very much Eggener's previous book on Luis Barragan and the introductory essay displays his characteristic clarity and umnpretentious scholarship.Favourite essay so far? Difficult to pick between the old friend of Alice Friedman's'People who live in glass houses' and a new one to me, though quite old, Neil Levine, writing about Venturi. This text examines the principal 17th-century architectural themes - "capital city", "church" and "palace" - using the most famous examples of the period in Rome, Paris, Turin and Versailles. A large section of the book is devoted to religious architecture, analysing works by Della Porta, Maderno, Mansart, Borromini, Bernini and Guarini, envisaged in both a local and European context. The book ends with a general survey of the diffusion of the Baroque in Europe, in its various local versions, up until the development of an "international style". ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Archeologically interesting!
We are now spoiled by computer graphics and have much higher expectations regarding lay-out than we did even twenty years ago.

It is not acceptable today to read about a building whose photograph appears only five pages later!

This book, obviously a reprint from decades back, is a reminder of how things used to be done in the old days.

Also (possibly significant of how we used to think!), the author's perspective is limited to Western Europe, whereas baroque architecture has flourished admirably elsewhere, notably in Central and Eastern Europe and in Latin America.

To be fair, however, not all is dated in this book and some of the analytical insights presented are still pertinent today.

(24 color and 315 black & white illustrations except for the Abrams edition with 395 black and white illustrations, including 8 maps and 20 diagrams.)
PUBLISHER'S SYNOPSIS:
The History of World Architecture is one of Electa's history series, a milestone in the evolution of architecture books, owing to the make-up of each individual volume and especially to its international scope. The presence of authoritative scholars, the combination of texts and illustrations and the careful use of accurate yet accessible terms, have contributed to the series' worldwide popularity. Baroque Architecture examines the principal seventeenth-century architectural themes - "capital city", "church" and "palace" - using the most famous examples of the period in Rome, Paris, Turin and Versailles. A large section is devoted to religious architecture, analysing works by Della Porta, Maderno, Mansart, Borromini, Bernini and Guarini, envisaged in both a local and European context. The book ends with a general survey of the diffusion of the Baroque in Europe up until the development of an "international style" in its various local versions.

Product Description
One of the most important books on the modern movement in architecture, The New Architecture and the Bauhaus poses some of the fundamental problems presented by the relations of art and industry and considers their possible, practical solution. Gropius traces the rise of the New Architecture and the work of the now famous Bauhaus and, with splendid clarity, calls for a new artist and architect educated to new materials and techniques and directly confronting the requirements of the age. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars What is the competence of the designer after all?
What is design? This question is answered in tens of ways today, pointing [maybe] to a paradigm shift in the profession. In this scenarium, I rather stick to the definition that broght the term into life, when the idea captivated the world. Gropius view is still the strongest we have, is the one that created this profession.

I think the profession took many paths after the dissolution of the Bauhaus and lots of them are misunderstandings that live the designer in a bad position. Gropius and the Bauhaus professors begun with a quest of understanding what in art can be objective knowledge and they did a lot of work in this direction, but by reading the book you'll see that that's just one of the positions that build the importance of the bauhaus. The "designer knowledge" is something very delicate (that Gropius understood very well) and has been interpreted in bilions of ways by schools and institutes of today. Yes, Gopius and the Bauhaus was trying to "scientifisize" design, but with the solid knowledge that art cannot be taught, that creativity comes from personality and so on. The complete project of the Bauhaus was the beauty of it.

To see how this idea of a professional called product designer gathering industrial, artistic and crafts skills was conceived is the triumph that makes this book [to me] the ultimate guide!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone into design
In one of my graphic design classes, we studied Bauhaus design. I was fascinated by Walter Gropius' designs and decided to do a report on him (if you can ever visit his house in MA, you will be awed to see his theories put into practice!). When I found and read this book in my college library I knew I had to buy it. It was out of print when I ordered it, but worth the wait. This book is a must read for all architecture/art history/graphic design students.

Just knowing that everything in this book came directly from Gropius hand is fascinating. It's a look into an aspect of design/architecture that biographies and history books just can't give you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Substance
I've found great substance with your book, "The New Architecture and the Bauhaus". It was brilliant and very informative. I was fascinated by the analysis of 20th Century Modern architecture and the history of its development.I recommend this book highly for anyone interested in modern design, or the courage of the indomitable human spirit.Gropius fought against mediocrity, mindless repetition and the numbing Status Quo.This book deserves to be read. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good textbook.
The chapters are a reasonable length. The text is well written and has a definate voice. If you are a student this is a nicer size to carry than an enourmous biology book. The only annoying aspect is the first page of every chapter has the text alligned to the right. I loose my place for a few sentences. This is very minor though.

5-0 out of 5 stars The ultimate on Preservation
Dr. Murtagh is probably the top expert in the field of Preservation and he has written this very readable book for all interested in the subject. He has received high honors for his work and is
known worldwide as the authority.

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable history of preservation
An outstanding summary of historic preservation. This was a required text for the online course I took, but it is very readable for the average person. A must-read for those interested in old buildings and their relevance today.
