Product Description
The documents and essays in this book portray the Arkansas creation-science case, emphasizing its implications for our understanding of the proper relationship between science and society. The documents include the original "Balanced Treatment for Creation-Science and Evolution-Science Act" of 1981, the initial briefs of the plaintiffs and defendants in the case that challenged the Act, the opinion of the court written by Judge William Overton, and several pieces of followup legislation and legal opinion.Essayists include attorneys from the New York firm of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher, & Flom, who describe why they volunteered their services to the plaintiffs and what special problems they encountered in working with scientists, and several of the expert witnesses and advisors who organized the probing of the nature of science that lay at the heart of the trial.Sociologist Dorothy Nelkin explores the evolution of creationism from the time of the Scopes trial to the present; theologian Langdon Gilkey examines the interrelation of inquiry and belief; anatomist Joel Cracraft describes the scientific response to creationism; philosophers Michael Ruse and Larry Laudan debate the implications of the definition of science finally adopted by the court; and historian Stephen Brush assesses the possible impact of creationism on education in the physical sciences.Marcel Chotkowski La Follette - editor of the journal Science, Technology, & Human Values, where much of this material was first collected - has rounded out this case book by adding an introduction, an extensive bibliography, and a review of the media coverage of the trial. ... Product Description
After the Little Rock Central High School integration crisis of 1957, Arkansas Governor Orval Faubus invoked a hastily passed state law to close the schools rather than integrate them. This is the story of the WEC, the Women's Emergency Committee, a group of respectable, middle-class white women who fought against the law. With passion and sensitivity, Murphy recounts the challenges and triumphs of that battle, which issued from the mutual link Southern white women shared with disfranchised African Americans in their common goal for full citizenship. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Overall, I am very disappointed with this book.I will be teaching a high school creative writing class and I was looking for books that would guide me.The activities are very basic - they would probably work better for elementary and junior high students. The main source of disappointment is the lack of substantial content. The book is only 69 pages (with a lot of blank space on each page).I would have been happy to spend $3-4 on this, but $18 seems like a complete rip off. ... Product Description

Taken a half-century ago, these photographs depict the desegregation crisis in Little Rock, Arkansas. In 1957, President Dwight D. Eisenhower was so moved at the beating of veteran Alex Wilson that he ordered 1,200 paratroopers from the 101st Airborne to Little Rock, and federalized the Arkansas National Guard to quell the "disgraceful occurrences." A Life Is More Than a Moment carries us back to those painful and turbulent times, but it does not leave us there. In addition to these immortal photos, photographer Will Counts also took new portraits of many of the original subjects when he returned to Little Rock in 1997. Essays by Robert S. McCord, Ernest Dumas, and Will Campbell chart the path leading to the crisis and define its impact on the civil rights movement. This book shows an ugly hatred, but in the end, it is also a book of hope and reconciliation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dropped Back in Time---1957
I purchased this book to accompanying the book my high school classes are currently reading, "Warriors Don't Cry."As a high school teacher, I realize that students are likely to more fully engage with a novel when they feel they can truly relate to the story and when they are able to imagine all that is happening."A Life is More Than a Moment" makes this possible! As we read the novel, I share pictures from this text with my students. They love this book.Often they ask to read this book even on their own, excitedly reporting their newfound knowledge with their classmates.I would definitely recommend this book for someone who is intersted in seeing the real thing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great summary and big picture view
This book is a thoughtful summary of the events of the 1957 Central High Crisis, especially for those who don't have the time or inclination to delve into the details but want to know all about the history behind the crisis and the events at that time. What makes the book even more interesting is that the authors take you inside Central High School forty years later so that the reader can see the life and times of a academically successful and fully integrated CHS today.Of course, one of the greatest contributions are the photographs by the late Will Counts -- awarding winning photography that carries you back in time.I highly recommend the book for students over age 12 and anyone who desires an accurate account of this shameful yet historic civil rights event.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dramatic Pictures, and hope for the future
Little Rock was the first time since reconstruction that federal troops had been mobilized top protect Blacks seeking to exercise the rights they allegedly won in the aftermath of the Civil War.The terror, hatred, and brutality of the times is searingly captured by the iconic photo which gives the book its title--of a young white student screaming, her face contorted, at an equally young black girl.Equally appalling is the other major picture which forms the center of this work--a series showing the mob attacking a black reporter, and beating him with no one willing to intervene.

While the book would be worthwhile for the pictures alone, it is all the more compelling by bringing the story up to date.Centered around the fortieth anniversary of desegregation of Little Rock High School, the author tracks down both the black student and the white student spewing hatred. There are pictures of them together, having gone through a process of healing and reconciliation.

The ultimate question--why such hatred--is not answered, nor could it be, given the format and limitations of what is, af4er all, basically a book of narrated pictures. But the question is certainly raised and explored.

This is a great book and should be on the shelf of anyone who loves photography or wants to understand why the Civil rights movement was so important to the history of this country (although I would strongly urge that no one take the advice f the other reviewer, and use this as the primary source for information on this struggle).

My only criticism is that the upbeat tone of this volume needs to be questioned. As James Meridith has said--If a black man can be kicked ten times in open view, and has no redress, is it really "improvement" if he is only kicked nine times, but still has no redress? Is Little Rock really free of prejudice and discrimination? Is America?

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Informational oabout Segregation
This book although not very entertaining, is perfect for someone writing an essay on segregation or more particulary Central High. This book was my main topic of research for my essay. A good Read. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review
Certain images connected with the civil rights movement of the1950s and '60s are branded in the collective consciousness of thenation: dogs and firehoses turned on African American protesters inBirmingham, the faces of the four young girls killed in the bombing ofthe 16th Street Baptist Church, and the National Guard escorting blackteenagers into Little Rock's Central High School in September of1957. At the time of Little Rock's desegregation, Arkansas governorOrval E. Faubus ensured his place in history by defying federal courtorders and blocking integration, thus forcing President Eisenhower tocall out the National Guard. Faubus was certainly not the onlysoutherner who vociferously opposed integration--George Wallace ofAlabama and Lestor Maddox of Georgia (among others) also jumped on thebandwagon--but what's unusual about Faubus is that he started out as aracial liberal. Surprises abound in Faubus, a fascinatingbiography by Roy Reed.

Reed's book does double duty, revealingthe personal history of Orval Faubus and exploring the labyrinthineties between politics and business still operating in Arkansastoday. Faubus is a cautionary tale about good intentions gonebad, principles subsumed by ambition. How Orval Faubus, a one-timeracial liberal, could have invoked the race card in 1957 and continuedto play it for another decade is but one of many intriguing questionsReed attempts to answer. But Faubus has implications beyond thelife of just one man; its lessons about the corrupting influence ofpower, money, and big business could as easily be applied to anynumber of the political scandals rocking the nation today. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent account of an interesting character
This is a well-done biography of an important character in the civil rights struggle. It gets only four stars, though, since it has no bibliography and its source notes are skimpy and not indicated by footnote numbers.Faubus was born in poverty and named Orval Eugene, with the Eugene being in honor of Eugene Debs, prominent Socialist leader admired by Orval's father. In Orval's youth he flirted with socialism and later lied about it in his political campaigns. When he saw the fierceness of reaction involved with the integration of Central High School in Little Rock, he ignored the rightness of the integration decision and plumped onto the side of the racists. If he had done otherwise he no doubt would not have been governor of Arkansas for 12 years (1955-1967) even though he would have been on the side of decency and rightThe years when Faubus was governor were hard years for fair-minded people, though a bit later, Dale Bumpers showed that decent people could be elected in Arkansas. It is interesting to contrast Faubus' career with that of Dale Bumpers (told with a light touch in Bumpers' engaging memoir, The Best Lawyer in a One-Lawyer Town), but Bumpers came along a bit later and was able to be elected despite the racist tenets of some of his constituents. This book is well worth reading. ...
