surprisingly good
I bought this book with suspicious in mind but it came out to be a really good surprise. The posters inside are indeed innovative, and most of them are extremelly well conceived and beautifully crafted: a great source of inspiration to most designers. A short explanation follows each of them and adds a lot to it.

On the other side, the editorial project is quite poor. Lots of unecessary graphics and 'water marks' that stand in the way of the important pictures.

Poster Art
The book i ordered from overseas came in suprisingly quick and it was in good quality.

Visually Excellent!
I got this book to give me some more ideas in poster design and it's fantastic! Some works are really arty and don't really communicate the fundamentals of who, when and where, clearly however, there are a great many examples in here of excellent poster design concepts and artwork. Overall if you're simply looking for a whole bunch of different visual idea's then this book is great!

"Search Inside" wow..you can read the legalize
I don't know anything about this book. I gave it 5 stars cuz the other review gave it 5 stars and I don't want to change it. I'm just peeved at the "Look Inside"(TM) feature that lets you explore...the index, the copyright info, the front and back covers, and a chapter start. No art, no text. I don't want to buy this just based on that. Sorry.

Lots of simple, PRETTY designs
This book was everything I hoped it would be.One thing, it is more of a 'magazine' type book, but still has fabulous pictures in it.I have used two of the beautiful, unique designs in this book as TATTOOS!It has fabulous ultra-feminine desigs that are much better than the run-of-the-mill tribal art or celtic art designs.I also use the designs for scrapbooking.At the price this is offered for, you can't beat it! ... Fascinating
...This book shows how each pattern is constructed. First showing the over all tiling and revealing the basic unit of each, then showing how the transformational rules ( of rotation and mirroring etc.) are applied. It is amazing how complex a pattern may be created from an extremely simple beginning. It contains a few color plates, but its real strength is in the 250 black and white islamic patterns, each with unit cell, and template motif which demonstrate the constructions. Many of the patterns, analyzed are those originally shown in "Arabic Geometrical Pattern and Design" (Dover Pictorial Archive Series) by J. Bourgoin.
...The first half of the book mainly covers Zalij shapes, the nature and properties of symmetry, invariance groups, the 17 groups, their identification, and algorithms for them.
...This book is perhaps more for those interested in symmetry than those interested in drawing islamic patterns.
...The black and white patterns are all of single line width, and thus show no interlacing.
..."Pattern in Islamic Art" by David Wade, ( isbn 0879510420 ) contains interlace patterns from page 78 to 105, but it is not a book about symmetry, it utilizes a grid method of construction.
..."Islamic Geometric Patterns" by Eric Broug ( SBN-10: 050028721X ISBN-13: 978-0500287217) shows the use of a compass on pages 22 and 23 to creat double line width, but has no full plates showing the weaving as does David Wade's book.

Rich source of information
In 1944, Edith Muller claimed that all the 17 wallpaper groups were found in Alhambra. Unfortunately, her paper only contained 11 of them. Grunbaum and Shephard found two more, and finally in 1987 Perez-Gomez found the missing four.

The book includes pictures and discussions of all the 17 wallpaper groups. Unfortunately, it does not include pictures of the "missing" patterns from Alhambra. For that you have to go to J.M. Montesinos: Classical Tessellations and Three-Manifolds. ... Read more

Wonderful book about Kamon!!!
This book is a good tool to find the Japanese family Kamon.
It is a very good reference!

Excellent motifs
Im in graphic design and using this book has helped me so much! Hundreds of pages bombarded with close to 3x3 thumbnails-so much info that it will probably take a very long time to actually notice each design. Some people dont like this book because all designs are set into a limited palette of insignias. The point is not to look at what the overall shape of the thumbnail is but at the specific contours, combinations. There's a variety from organic to geometric shapes. Some designs look modern, others ancient, others are used today i.e. radiation symbol. All of these designs come from an Asian background which is so design and logo-oriented that it most definitely helps you find that "swoosh" or certain attitude you're looking for. Overall, Dover books have great graphics!

A graphic source book
It hadn't occurred to me that this could be a research source for geneaology, but i'm glad to see that it's useful for those searching for ancestral emblems. I appreciate this book as a source for small, clip art versions of Japanese graphic design.
As any user of clip art knows, it only takes one application from a source to pay for the cost of the book and this one has more than paid its way.

great for artists and geneology detectives
This book is simply the best.I found my maternal grandfather's mon and my paternal grandmother's crest in this book.It is quite comprehensive.Reading japanese kanji is a plus as you can then read descriptions next to appropriate mon.Graphic artists studying oriental design will find more than 4,000 designs that have existed for hundreds of years.There is inspiration aplenty for all artists.

Celtic Designs
I have not had a chance to use this book yet but if I ever need a Celtic knot - I will not lack for one.

Don't Waste Your Money!
Don't waste your money on this book. I only paid a few dollars for it used, but I'm still embarrassed at having thrown away my cash. The work shown is very amateurish, with terrible line symmetry and line quality. It's the kind of work you'd expect to see in an art student's sketchbook. I've seen better art on walls as graffiti. -Chris

Good intro to Celtic work
This contains quite a bit of basic Celtic patterns and art.However, I was somewhat disappointed:the knot work is not terribly intricate nor original.Also, the ink quality of each graphic is low... they already look like photocopies.The publisher could have taken a little bit more time and money to improve the images and remove the obviously granular appearance of each image.

There is value in the book though:it contains 4 different Celtic-style fonts (each containing solely the 26 letters), plus there is a good variety of bands, circles, and knots.In addition, each piece of art is spaced well apart so that one can easily photocopy and then cut out the patterns if so inclined.Both sides of each page are used for different pieces of art though, so I would not recommend cutting the original pages.

Due to the simplicity and low quality of each print, I feel that this book would be great only for a grade school art project or similar crafts.It simply does not have enough detailed Celtic art to be of use for works that require higher quality or detail.

This book is an excellent clipart resource for those who have Celtic projects in mind. It has a variety of designs from smaller, comparatively simple knots, to intricate frame style knotwork borders, bands, zoomorphicdesigns, key patterns and spirals. There are also two complete Celticknotwork alphabets, one uncial style alphabet, and another thats not reallyCeltic but very pretty nonetheless. I've used it already for severaltattoos, and some graphics for my website as well. a little worn but usable

An excellent primer
I found this book easy to follow and very thorough, however it is quite basic. It provides a good introduction to draping and places emphasis on the importance of careful marking and taking stock of your progress every step of the way. This is a book that I would advise taking out of the library or obtaining a used copy of because the lessons it contains are easily internalized and it will soon be taking up space on your bookshelf and collecting dust. Great for beginners, this book assumes you know almost nothing and is meticulous about definitions and explaining processes. The diagrams are the clearest and most detailed I have seen and are in abundance throughout.
