a classic gem
Johannes Itten's book about colour is a classic - not to be missed by anyone seriously interested in colour. It's not only brimming with technical information about colour - it also has a very sensitive, almost poetic edge. The language is beautiful, and so are the many colour reproductions in the book. I do not recommend it warmly, but - hotly!

Great text on color
The Art of Color describes seven innate contrasts in color, giving special significance to Simultaneous Contrast.Further, Itten describes the psychological effects of color, the analogous shapes to each color, drops the names of several color theorists which can be used for a jumping off point for further study, provides several exercises for the reader, and gives eye-opening analyses of a wide variety of paintings, from Rembrandt to Seurat to van Gogh to Mondrian.

The text is not perfect, and suffers from deficiencies stemming from the fact that color was not as well understood when Itten was developing these theories.The primary colors are described as red, yellow, blue, instead of the red, green, blue (and complements cyan, magenta, yellow) that we know today.

Another deficiency is a striking lack of several color effects described in other contemporary texts on color theory, such as the Bezold effect, vibrating colors, and the Weber-Fechner law.

Still, this text is not to be missed.It is probably the most comprehensive text on color that is not written from a purely technical standpoint.

This is THE premium book on color
As an artist who uses color in my work, this book has been invaluable. The color wheel has always been my primary reference for color combinations; however, since reading Johannes Itten book, an entirely new world of understanding and enlightenment has evolved. I love this book for how it has enriched my knowledge and passion for color.

Eye-opener on harmony of colours
This book of Johannes Itten is a good example of the use of colour in the antroposofic way. He connects the different colours with moods and feelings, religious symbols and even gives it a spiritual dimension. For me it was an eye-opener on the aspect of harmony. Itten emphasizes that the eye and mind are always looking for balance, harmony in the sense of a grey-tone. If a work of art does not reflect this kind of harmony, for instance because of a distonality in the use of colours, the eye and mind get restless and agitated. But if used on purpose this aspect of colour gives a work of art a very strong impact and makes it a masterpiece.[...]. ... Read more

I have read several books on color. Though others may have been more scholarly,COLOR by Betty Edwards is the most understandable.The exercises in mixing colors that she provides are not only excellent and practical, but are worth doing well and keeping for future reference .

A great book on color. I am not a person that likes to read a lot
but the book was very educational.I read it daily until finished!

Before I read this book I knew ZERO about color grading.Now I know a HECK of a lot more and this book is ALSO for very advanced color graders as well because he has tips from a very wide range of color graders in the big leagues.

I needed to learn a lot in a hurry and this book is a bible for me.I return to it again and again.

Making a great film is one thing but without the best color grading you diminish your chances of winning awards for your very hard work. At the absolute minimum this book will teach you how to prepare your film for digital color correction by at least getting your luma in order. This will greatly decrease your cost in post and, more importantly, having done this essential preliminary work with your blacks, gammas and highlights will provide the digital color grader with product that will have much of the heavy lifting already completed.

Additionally, this book will help you specify to your digital color corrector exactly what you want, which will save time and expense in post also.

AND this book also contains enough incredibly well presented information so that you can do a pretty damn good job grading it yourself if you have the desire and force of will to pull it off, which I do.

This book is an absolutely indispensable resource and you need to buy it if you are serious about what people think of your hard work in film and video.

Excellent
I read Steve's previous book, `Color Correction for Digital Video' several years ago and had found it to be a very good starting point for my color correction education. I came across `The Art and Technique of Digital Color Correction' by accident while looking for a text on Apple Color. The two books work well together in providing a very thorough, easy to understand, survey course on modern color correction techniques.

There were several elements of the book I found excellent. First, Steve's writing is very conversational and understandable and demystifies the science of color and light. His clear methodical approach to balancing color in primary corrections and solving problems with secondary corrections made immediate logical sense to me. Steve explains things in a way any novice or seasoned pro can understand.

Another wonderful feature of this book is that it applies the techniques to and provides screen shots from Avid Xpress Pro, Avid Symphony, Final Cut Pro, Color, Color Finesse, and After Effects and approaches color-correction in a modern cosmopolitan way... understanding that there are multiple tools ands approaches to any problem. This gives the reader a very universal over-view of color correction as an artform.

An improvement over the previous book is the addition of explanations and glossary of terms in the margins; which any good student of color correction will find useful. Both books come with a DVD of video materials that can be used in conjunction with the examples in the book to provide a hands-on tutorial experience for the reader.

I read the two books on the subway on my way to and from work as an editor and was up to speed quickly. I already knew Final Cut, Avid, and After Effects and now am completely comfortable with the color correction tools in all of them as well as Apple Color. I highly recommend this book to anyone serious about modern video editing and color correction.

good illustrations, confusing text

I gave this book two stars:both stars for the illustrations and no stars for the text.The illustrations look great but as I was reading the book, I was surprised to see that it had been published in 2006.It seemed not to have benefitted from any word processing.I felt I was trying to read a bunch of notes on index cards, quickly stapled together into chapters.There was no effort to explain what the whole book was trying to do, how the chapters were organized and what might happen in each chapter.I was constantly stymied by a thread of an idea that would fray into nothing, by a jump into a new subject, by repetitions, by hops backwards and forwards in history, by an inconsistent approach to the relationship between the science of light and philosophical conjectures about color theory.The text is a mess.
This is a shame because scattered throughout the book are fascinating little anecdotes that would be hard to find anywhere else. Would it ever be possible for an editor to take John Gage's index cards and rewrite this book?I know that I would read it if someone took a crack at it.

Lots of content but not structured
I have a little bit of background on colour theory, so I read this book expecting to learn much of colour in art. It is evident that the author has done much research in this area and has plenty of things to say. However, I felt that the book was badly written. Many sentences could have been broken down into two or more, because they contained several ideas, which were difficult to absorb. E.g., The author writes about an artist, who tried to show something in his art works, while mentioning his educational background and teacher and similar artists in one sentence! Despite re-reading several paragraphs several times, I had difficulty understanding what the author was trying to say. Perhaps the book is more suited for people, who already have knowledge on many of the artists, but not for newbies to art like me. The book should be re-written until the message of each chapter is more clear!

Very interesting overview of how artists think about color.
I thought this book was great.Of course, the best book on color is Josef Albers--Interaction of Color, but this is a worthy companion.Interesting to read how artist's perceptions and ideas of color have evolved over time.Good for artists, as well as non-artists, and will get you thinking about color in a new way.Recommend. ... Stunning and appealing
I bought this book off of the two other ladies reviews. I was looking for a book that someone like me-buys a handful of flowers then doesn't know how to arrange them-would use. If your creative this book will definitely get you salivating to try and recreate some of these arrangements. The arrangements are for the most part very simple and quietly appealing. If you are not fond of contemporary or modern this book probably isn't for you. The book is a different perspective to just a handful of flowers in a vase, it uses a variety of glass, metal and other containers all with tropical flowers. I'm going to go thumb through it again!

Bring on the Beads
I just love this book! I immediately sat down and worked one of the patterns. The directions are easy to follow and the "tips" are nice too. much inspired
Good instructions, bead patterns added, I' ve already made three different beads and look forward to making many more.

Bad on basics
I bought this wanting to make beads like the ones on the cover--just a round bead covered in seed beads. I'm an intermediate level beader and I follow directions well, but the book has no basic instructions. It jumps from how to do peyote stitch (which I can do easily) to directions for very complicated beaded beads. Sometimes the instructions for complicated beads were easier to follow than for the simple ones! I just find this book frustrating.

Fun uses for a weaver's leftovers!
A neat book for weavers and/or beaders. Covers a lot of stitches, and since they're just beaded beads, each project can be done pretty quick and using those pesky bits of leftover beads from other things. It's got a little of every style ranging from simple to very bizarre unwearable-but-neat-to-look-at stuff, so I think just about anyone will find a little bit of SOMETHING they like in here! :) Nothing in here is going to challenge you or drive you nuts, but I thought it was a fun buy if you pick it up cheap! ... The book itself is in great condition and I have really enjoyed reading it. If you like to study color theory Stephen uses a clear understanding of this subject with new ideas.

Definitely worth buying. Lots of information and I will use this book over and over again.I have lots of watercolor painting books, and this rates as one of the most informative. The Quiller Colorwheel is worth the price of the book alone. His descriptions of complements, triads, analgous colors, are informative in a very clear format. Great art book for teachers!
I teach 2nd grade, and I have less talent for art than a goldfish.

None the less, I've been able to help my students create some knockout work, using the ideas, pictures, and instructions in this book.

Awesome Book
After spending thousands of dollars on homeschool materials, I think it's funny that a $15 book should be my favorite!This book is awesome.The BEST part is that is in color on glossy paper!!!Now we can actually see what we are supposed to be doing.I'm only buying color, glossy art books from now on.

We, 7, 9 and 39,created every project in this book and we were all pleased with our results.Basic paint supplies are needed, and I'd recommend good quality papers.The drawing is kept to a minumum so even the littlest can do it.I mounted all the projects on black construction paper and turned our hallway into a gallery.I'm keeping this book and doing it all over again in a few years, so we can see our progress. ... Great Color Clues for Portrait Painting
I am an art instructor and I use this book extensively to assist my students in mixing skin colors. I especially like the additional explainations of warm and cool shadow colors which occur on the face. It also has a nicely organized collection of various ethnic color catagories.

Not a favorite
We've owned this book/game for a year now, and my 4yo and 6yo- who are both creative and very into coloring, art, etc.- have played with it for a total of about 45 minutes.I wish I hadn't purchased it.

Plenty of fun for my preschooler
This book was suggested for older children, but my 4 year old loves this book.In the book it has dozens of pictures to spark ideas in your childs mind.It also has blank pages for them to create their own pictures.It comes with plenty of stickers.I have had it for close to a year now and my boy still loves it and has pages of stickers he hasn't gotten too.

Many useful photos -- not just about paint colors but the overall look
Although the mission for the book may have been to showcase the F&B colors, they achieved far more.This book has full color photos on every page and is a wonderful compendium of period rooms. For me the photo of the brown and white dining room (walls painted in Dauphin, a color that looks quite different on walls than on my tiny chip) was worth the price of admission --- especially considering you can get a (barely) used hardcover copy of this book for less than $10. One of the best bargains I've ever seen, in a truly useful and gorgeous design book.

Farrow & Ball;The Art of Color
I bought this book as a birthday gift for my son-in-law's 40th birthday.He is an arichect in Charleston, South Carolina and has become quite intrigued with Farrow and Ball. He used some of their colors to paint his design studio.So, I bought this book "unseen"because I hoped it would be "well done" andI must say that I was not disappointed! The photography by Edward Addeo is nothing short of amazing. You can really appreciated the subtletyand depth of the Farrow and Ball paint colors.Also, an added extra bonus to this book is that one of the homes featured belongs to friends of mine and their daughter happends to be best frinds with the "birthday boy's" first cousin. So, serendipitously, I found the perfect birthday present!

My son received this beautifulbook as a Christmas present. I am hoping to get one of my own.
I love the way the photographer uses natural light. Addeo'sphotographs really give you a sense of how colorenhances furnishings anddetermines the atmosphere of a room. Color has to be bold but yet subtle or it will compete. A qualitypaint is called for hence-Barrow & Ball. This is a great book for decorating ideas.

Disappointed
I was waiting for this book for some time and had high hopes because I know that Farrow and Ball make great paint.The book was a disappointment however, because the quality of the pictures was poor and the text rather boring.I had somehow expect it to be better.I also think many of the homes pictured were rather dated looking and not as interesting as some of the new rooms we see in other publications.

A total delight
The great thing about this books is that I TOTALLY disagree with the reviewer ...

The author has selected new and emerging artists instead of the tried and true.As a parent I enjoyed learning about new artists instead of sitting throught Intro to Art History again.My child has benefited from from learning her colors and being exposed to new artists.

A total disappointment
I have ordered around 100 products ...and I have never been as disappointed as I was with this book and with The Art of Shapes. I bought them for a three year old child thinking that he would start getting acquainted with famous works of arts from all over the world.With a few exceptions the artists selected are completely unknown.There are millions of famous beautiful European and American masterpieces that would have been more suitable for a child....

What I did not figure on was how much I would LOVE it.
I read about this book in a parenting magazine and thought that my baby daughter would enjoy it.My husband is an artist, so I thought that it would be a great book to teach her about art in a fun way. A pearl of great value
I love and leave my books, but I'll never part with this one. I look at it daily and always find something new and edifying.

The book's raison d'etere is Alexander's magnificent collection, displayed in glorious photos. But if you feel frustrated/disgusted or uncomfortable/uneasy toward modern design, art, or architecture, you'll appreciate Alexander's axioms for objectively evaluating the aesthetic quality of the carpets.Alexander hopes that a generalized version of these axioms will save us from the ugliness of modernism and get human beings back into the business of creating truly beautiful things, whether carpets, buildings, comptuer programs, etc.That's why he titled it "A foreshadowing..."

Alexander comments on each carpet in the collection, describing the fascinating detective work that went into placing and dating each piece, as well as pointing out the most noteworthy elements of the patterns and colors. His commentary causes me to appreciate each carpet as a historical piece with tremendous significance to today -- the carpets are seemingly messengers from the past, reminding us of truths that have long been dormant in the human spirit.

He describes the best carpets as evoking a presence that is both human and divine. He says that a reliable way to judge the "better" of two carpets is to ask people which of the two they would choose to represent their own self or soul.Even carpet-naive people will consistently choose the more valuable carpet, even if it's not the one they "like" best. Interesting, right?

Great but not what you would expect
Christopher Alexander is known among architects and maybe even more among computer enthusiasts. If you are one of them (us) and know his other work, you would be surprised by this book.
It deals with carpets, specifically Turkish carpets.
A friend of mine lent me this book and I was fascinated. It has a certain passion for its subject and its interesting even if you don't know anything and don't care anything about carpets. Author explains about some items in his quite large collection of carpets and why he finds them not only rare and valuable as an antique but also beautiful.
The beauty of a carpet lies in its pattern and here we get to familiar grounds (as for example in his »A Pattern Language«). A pattern consists not only of the ornament but also of the negative space, the area remaining. He explains on examples from his collection. And one wanders if there is yet another application of his theory beside architecture per se, computer design and carpets.
Still its quite expensive, but if you happen to lay your hands on it, go ahead and enjoy.

One drawback...

Other than that, the book's great.

What I like about his writing is how relates the way your eye works to the way the carpets are designed and built.He yalks a lot about "centers" and about how a carpet can be that much more enjoyable when your eye can be drawn to sections which can be more-easily digested.

a quick & humble impression
I got to take a look at this book in the UMASS non-circulating collection. It was beautiful, covered with a gold patterned cloth. Inside, the paper and reproductions of the carpets and art work were of the very best quality.I read the introduction and skimmed through the subsequent chapters. After my breif encounter with this book, I felt as though I had found the secret heart of Alexander's architectural theories. Great book.Very useful for new collectors.

Make it Right!
I enjoyed the book; it was entertaining, insightful, scholarly, and included a few insightful surprises!However, I was most disappointed to note the biographical omission of Mr. Simmie Knox; he is too talented and humble a person to be overlooked in such a fashion.So, for the sake of posterity, the book should be recalled and corrected as soon as possible.Surely, we wouldn't want it said this is the way we regard an African American Presidential Artist! Correction please.

The Other Side Of Color
What a beautiful explanation of art that has been ignored for so many years. Not only is the book well illustrated, it is informative. Not having much understanding of art at all, I have now begun to understand the artist, the art and the expression of information that is creative and informative of people and events. I love reading oil painting "how to" books!!! This book covers almost everything you need in an understandable way.It is much more than just a color mixing book.It covers perspective, portraits, landscapes, still lifes, lighting etc etc etc..Would make a great gift for a novice, hobbyist.Great buy.

HELEN VAN WYKS COLOR RECIPES
Not only are there color recipes there are lots of photo references and color swatches - but the tidbits of info that accompany the recipes are invaluable.This is a GREAT reference and one of the best I've seen. A must have for the artist. It is wonderful to have this information all in one book.

Which Paint Colors Not To Use
I just hate trying to mix a light red and it turn out to be "pinky."Trial and error will eventually work after spending too much time and too much paint and a lot of frustration.It is such a joy to have some idea in advance whether to use alizarin crimson or cadmium red light.The name of the color on the tube is important. Some colors are thin and won't cover -- which sometimes is a good thing depending on what you are painting.Helen Van Wyk's Favorite Color Recipes has really saved me time and aggravation trying to get the right color.Additionally the illustrations in the book are not only educational but a pleasure to behold.A great book to have!

I find this book very helpfull in learning how to mix colors.She talks about the color tones, hues, complimentery colors.Why she uses what color where. It gets you thinking about color and how to use it in your painting.
