Product Description

The automobile has long been a symbol of status, power, and autonomy, and ever since King Tut rolled through Egypt on his golden-wheeled chariot, artists and drivers have dreamed up mobile masterpieces. A striking photographic tribute and social history, Road Show navigates a path across high and low art, showing how people around the world are transforming their vehicles into stunning folk art, obsessive collections, social commentary, and visionary performances. In this fascinating showcase, we see how Henry Ford’s motto, “Any color as long as it’s black,” has been hung out to dry. From the Wienermobile to a hand-carved wooden Ferrari that drives in the canals of Venice to a giant red stiletto heel, Road SHow brings the “museum of the streets” to life.

Eric Dregni has written thirteen books, including Follies of Science, Weird Minnesota, Midwest Marvels, The Scooter Bible, Ads That Put America on Wheels, and Let’s Go Bowling! He lives in Minneapolis where he teaches Italian and creative writing and plays guitar in the mock-rock trio Vinnie & the Stardüsters.

Ruthann Godollei is a professor of art at Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota, and her artwork has been exhibited internationally. She has participated in and organized art car events for over twenty years and drives a 1985 Volvo covered with thousands of printed green gears.

4-0 out of 5 stars Overview cars in contemporary art and society
A real nice book with a lot of photos of creative cars. Some are artworks, some more like a joke or a wink to the society. It's great to see such a collection of different cars together. Most of them are funny.
Texts, research is well done and give a lot of information, but the reference to the owner or creator of the car could be more accurate and a link their website is often missing. Which is a pity if you want to find more info about the artist who made it or to see more photos of a specific car.
I recommend this book if you are looking for a world wide overview of creative cars. I enjoyed it to see this creativity.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for those who have a shared appreciation for the automobile and modern art
Expression is not bound by rules and ignoring these rules is a way of life for some. "Road Show: Art Cars and the Museum of the Streets" is a unique book discussing cars and how they have become a medium of artistic expression all their own. Discussing the history of the automobile and its evolution, authors Eric Dregni & Ruthann Godollei provide much in the way of intriguing thoughts and show many examples of people using their vehicle to say their message. "Road Show" is a must for those who have a shared appreciation for the automobile and modern art.

4-0 out of 5 stars Indonesia's National Museum
This new guide (2007) to the highlights of Indonesia's National Museum is very welcome. It is reasonably priced, topically organized, and offers selective but blanced coverage of the Museum's holdings in prehistory, metal work, statues, textiles, and ethnographic artifacts. Good photographs, and short but informative object descriptions, combine with a few longer essays to give a good overview of the museum's history, current status, and aspirations for the future. Approximately 500 (my estimate) of the museum's 150,000 holdings are illustrated and discussed.

Some readers may want to know how this book compares to the earlier, 1992, "Art of Indonesia: Pusaka" from the same museum. "Pusaka" shows fewer objects, but in larger-format (and frankly, better) photographs. The essays in "Pusaka" focus on a single topic (pusaka = cultural and spiritual heritage), and are quite worthwhile for that very reason. Lovers of Indonesian art will want to have both books, because their differences compliment each other and both are very worthwhile. If I had to choose only one, it would be "Icons," just because it is more recent and gives the current insight into the museum's philosophy. Ideally, though, both books would occupy an honored place on any reader's bookshelf.

Product Description

Art, Museums and Touch examines conceptions and uses of touch within arts museums and art history. Candlin deftly weaves archival material and contemporary museology together with government policy and art practice to question the foundations of modern art history, museums as sites of visual learning, and the association of touch with female identity and sexuality.

This remarkable study presents a challenging riposte to museology and art history that privileges visual experience. Candlin demonstrates that touch was, and still is, crucially important to museums and art history. At the same time she contests the recent characterization of touch as an accessible and inclusive way of engaging with museum collections, and argues against prevalent ideas of touch as an unmediated and uncomplicated mode of learning.

An original and wide-ranging enquiry, this book is essential reading for scholars and students of museum studies, art history, visual culture, disability, and for anyone interested in the cultural construction of the senses.

Product Description

Shortly after the inception of the Museum of Art and Archaeology at the University of Missouri-Columbia, fourteen Old Master paintings were donated by the Samuel H. Kress Foundation in 1961. This group of paintings—all Italian in origin except for one, a copy of Rembrandt's Sacrifice of Isaac—forms the core of the museum's Western art collection. Representing the Renaissance and Baroque periods, Missouri's Kress Collection demonstrates not only the chronological progression of styles but also the geographic range of Italian art. The paintings include altarpieces, portraits, sacred and mythological images, and genre pieces. This catalog presents relevant facets of each work with lively essays by notable scholars Norman E. Land, Burton Dunbar, Judith Mann, Marjorie Och, and William E. Wallace.

Serving as a valuable record of the University of Missouri's Kress Collection, the catalog also recognizes the cultural impact and historical significance of one of America's great collectors. The introductory essay by Marilyn Perry, the current Kress Foundation president, recounts the history of the Kress Collection, the unparalleled philanthropy of traveling exhibits arranged by self- made millionaire Samuel H. Kress and his family, as well as the widespread donations of pieces from the collection. More than three thousand works of art from the Kress Collection, considered "one of the most distinguished ever assembled" by a private collector, have been donated to museums and institutions across the country.

The Samuel H. Kress Study Collection at the University of Missouri provides a scholarly consideration of this portion of the Kress Collection. An important addition to any art book collection, this catalog will be accessible to both the art historian and the general reader.

An all-new Babar book with tremendous crossover appeal!

Includes a free pull-out poster!

Following the phenomenal success of Babar's Yoga for Elephants, here is an all-new Babar story. Everyone who loves art, Babar, or children will love Babar's Museum of Art.

The old train station in Celesteville stands empty--should it be torn down? "No!" declare Celeste and Babar, who decide to turn it into an art museum. Their children (like many young museum-goers) have a lot of questions about art: "Does it have to be pretty? Does it have to be old? Does it have to make sense?" Celeste's patient answers explain the basic ideas of art appreciation.

Babar and Celeste's generous donations to the new museum include witty and striking elephant-inspired version of Michelangelo's Creation of Man, George Seurat's A Sunday on La Grande Jatte, and Sandro Botticelli's Birth of Venus, along with many other celebrated paintings. Children and adults will want to visit Babar's Museum of Art again and again!Amazon.com Review
On one of their weekly balloon flights over Celesteville, Babar and Celeste notice that the railroad station is standing empty. Elephants, it seems, now prefer cars over trains. Interestingly, although Babar comments on the roads "jammed with traffic," he and his queen decide to focus on the other issue--the abandoned station. Celeste comes up with an idea to turn it into a museum to house their art collection, and soon an architect is drawing up plans and workers are renovating the building. When the great day of the opening arrives, what a show! The royal couple had acquired some pretty impressive and well known works of art--all featuring elephants, of course. Laurent de Brunhoff outdoes himself with the real-life art-inspired paintings and sculptures, from Mary Cassatt’s"Mother and Child" to Edvard Munch’s "The Scream" to Leonardo da Vinci’s "Mona Lisa." Young art buffs will enjoy the very age-appropriate art appreciation lessons, as the children are encouraged!to say whatever they want about the art: "I like this picture because it’s red," says Arthur about Van Gogh’s "Self-Portrait." When pedantic Cornelius tries to pontificate, Celeste gently hushes him. Includes a free pull-out poster. (Ages 4 to 7) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

Product Description
More than 60 years have passed since Robert Coates, writing in the New Yorker in 1946, first used the term "Abstract Expressionism" to describe the richly colored canvases of Hans Hofmann. The name stuck, and over the years it has come to designate the paintings and sculptures of artists as different from one another as Jackson Pollock and Barnett Newman, Willem de Kooning and Mark Rothko, Lee Krasner and David Smith. The achievements of this generation put New York on the map as the center of the international art world, and constitute some of the twentieth century's greatest masterpieces. From the mid-1940s, under the aegis of Alfred H. Barr, Jr., works by then little-known American artists--including Pollock, de Kooning, Smith, Arshile Gorky and Adolph Gottlieb--began to enter the Museum's collection. These ambitious acquisition initiatives continued throughout the second half of the last century and produced a collection of Abstract Expressionist art the breadth and depth of which is unrivalled by any museum in the world. Supplemented by an essay by Ann Temkin, Chief Curator of Painting and Sculpture at MoMA, this volume celebrates the richness of the Museum's holdings of the paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints and photographs from this epochal moment in the history of art and of this institution. ... Product Description
Uncle has said that Anna must be good and keep up while he shows all the grown-ups around the big art gallery where he works. She's not to ask questions or touch anything, or get tired or want to go to the bathroom. Almost immediately, Anna has a problem--when you've got to go, you've just got to go. A laughing self-portrait of Rembrandt tells Anna of a toilet exhibited by Marcel Duchamp, and she begins to search for it. Along the way, she is painted by Edvard Munch and talks to Vincent van Gogh, who's upset that no one wants his paintings. Pablo Picasso offers her a snack of square apples and triangle pears. Andy Warhol is painting soup cans, but nobody--not Cezanne, nor Matisse, nor any of the others--can tell her where Duchamp's toilet is. Finally Jackson Pollack, who's painting messily on the floor, shows her the way--but Duchamp's toilet is not what she expected. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun intro to the art world
My 4 year old twins love this book, and it made trips to the art museum even more enjoyable becasue we have really gotten into the paintings like Anna does.A great journey.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, fun introduction to art.
Not only are the illustrations in this book fantastic, but the tale itself, as it incorporates a variety of artists, provides a fun, accessible entrance into the world of art that will help children feel comfortable with and begin to enjoy visual art.The fact that each page does not provide detailed information about the works and the artists does not detract from the quality of the book because it, in fact, provides a great opportunity for the adult reading with the child to discuss the art and the artists. This is a great book and comes highly reccomended.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrifying as any clasic fairy tale
Although you will not find any wicked witches, wolves or cauldrons in this book, the view of a girl child's world presented by the author and illustrator frighten me as much as any Grimm tale that I have left to mildew in the garage.
As the book starts, Anna is invited to share the day with her uncle at his job- in the art museum. The first thing that man does is to annihilate her, he does not welcome her to share his day, he allows her to witness it, as if through a one way mirror. She is admonished from the start to be virtually invisible. When invisible Anna's bladder threatens to leave a visible puddle on the floor, her pleas for help are unheard.Wetting yourself and being unheard, could well be the two most frightening daily traumas a child must face.
Once this terror of a backdrop ruse is hung, we are led on a frantic tour of a male dominated euro-centric art history, as if over saturated Anna, or any person worried on her behalfis going to manage to absorb one ounce of art history. While readers are sitting with their legs and fingers crossed, sympathetic mothers might begin hoping that Anna will encounter a woman who would surely pay attention and help her- but our hopes sink lower and lower as each turn of the page reveals yet another self centered masculine artist.
I am both a mother and an artist, and I would like to see this book re-written to include women artists, and non- europeans shoulder to shoulder with the men, and I would like to see Anna's needs respected and met.The illustrations are indeed lovely, but sadly the story line is too tragic to ignore.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books
It's a pretty good book because it shows lots of artists and what they painted. You can see the paintings and they are really good looking. Some are splatters; some are good paintings. And you can see what the artists did. Some of the artists were painting still lifes; some were painting splatters. They look as though the real artists painted them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Anna's Art Adventure
Anna is in an art museum and needs to go to the bathroom. While she looks, she ends up meeting famous artists.I learned how you can get lost in painting and how to paint different ways.My mom wishes that womenartists had been included.Excellent book, with color illustrations andwill be of interest to 2nd through the 4th graders.Recommended readingfor teachers and parents, also. ... Product Description

Drawings by the great Italian Mannerist painter and poet Agnolo Bronzino (1503-1572) are extremely rare. This important and beautiful publication brings together for the first time nearly all of the sixty drawings attributed to this leading draftsman of the 16th century.

Each drawing is illustrated in color, discussed in detail, and shown with many comparative photographs. Bronzino's technical virtuosity as a draftsman and his mastery of anatomy and perspective are vividly apparent in each stroke of the chalk, pen, or brush. The younger generations of Florentine artists particularly admired Bronzino for his technical virtuosity as a painter, and Giorgio Vasari praised him for his powers as a disegnatore (designer and draftsman).

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Souvenir of a Great Show
This is one of the best show catalogs that I have ever seen. The reproductions of Bronzino's masterful drawings are exceptionally accurate and vivid. Anyone interested in drawing should have this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book

5-0 out of 5 stars Masterpieces of drawing...
Beautiful drawings in a beautiful book: worth every penny and a fine - perhaps necessary - addition to your art reference library.

I can't be more specific (sorry Amazon!) as art, by its very nature, does not lend itself to specificity. Just look and you will see...

5-0 out of 5 stars exciting discoveries of neglected Bronzino drawings
Agnolo Bronzino (1503-72) was the pupil, assistant and probably the lover of Pontormo. He was also the court painter for Cosimo I de' Medici. Today this mannerist artist is primarily remembered for his elegant portrait paintings; his drawings are seldom featured in the many exhibition catalogues that I have encountered. Thus it is a rare treat to encounter a volume that showcases his entire known output of drawings.

There are 60 drawings executed by or attributed to Bronzino presented in this superb Metropolitan Museum catalogue. 26 of these are in the possession of the Uffizi Museum in Florence. Bronzino's drawings, primarily figure studies, were executed as preparatory sketches for paintings. The works are generally of exceptional quality and interest; one is left to wonder why they have received such scant attention in the past. Although they might not approach the originality and standard of the great drawers such as Rubens, Raphael or Michelangelo, Bronzino's efforts are not far behind.

Additional to the drawings are 62 unannotated color reproductions of Bronzino's paintings and tapestry designs. The standard of the color reproductions (mostly life sized for the drawings) are exceptional as is the general printing and paper quality. The essays and annotations are by authorities on Bronzino. Three cheers to the Metropolitan for a wonderful publication.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bronzino on paper: better than Bronzino on canvas.
This book is the catalog for the current show at the Met in NYC, which is the first exhibition ever devoted in the US to one of the masters of Mannerism in XVIth-century Florence. It is probably one of the best publications put out by the museum in recent years, both for the high-quality illustrations and for the scholarly text.

59 drawings by, or thought to be by, Bronzino, are studied here (his nearly entire known production) and the high point of the book is its explanation why they are thought to be by Bronzino himself and not by other contemporary mannerist artists such as Pontormo. The book also enables the reader to discover a master draughtsman, an artist who used the line as an unequalled means of expression, an artist much more impressive in these small works on paper than in his often pompous court portraits of the rich and famous of the time. ... This is the second publication from the ongoing research series, Global Art and the Museum (GAM), which was initiated in 2001 by German art historian Hans Belting and artist, writer and curator Peter Weibel at the ZKM Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe, Germany. The last 20 years have seen a rapid globalization of the art world, resulting in geographic decentralization and a shift away from a primarily Western perspective. GAM's aim is to analyze the effect of these changes on the art market, museums and art criticism. This volume comprises a collection of essays by experts--such as Claude Ardouin, Keeper of the African Section of London's British Museum, Koeki Claessens, Director of Central Africa's Royal Museum and Eugene Tan, Director of the Institute of Contemporary Arts Singapore--who presented at the 2007 conference. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Not a good buy
First of all the physical description of the book. It's slightly too large for a pocket type guide and to small for a catalogue. The pages are glossy with some excellent photos. Considering the collection that this work covers however it is way too thin. I'm not sure how they determined the importance of these pieces as there was no discernable pattern. There are no description of the works of art only dimensions, artist and country. This catalogue has a small introduction and profile of the collector Walter Chrysler Junior. Not a good buy.

Product Description
The Stammheim Missal is one of the most visually dazzling and theologically ambitious works of German Romanesque art. Containing the text recited by the priest and the chants sung by the choir at mass, the manuscript was produced in Lower Saxony around 1160 at Saint Michael's Abbey at Hildesheim, a celebrated abbey in medieval Germany.

This book features color reproductions of all of the manuscript's major decorations. The author surveys the manuscript, its illuminations, and the circumstances surrounding its creation, then explores the traditions of the illumination of mass books and the representation of Jewish scriptures in Christian art. She then considers the iconography of the manuscript's illuminations, identifies and translates many of its numerous Latin inscriptions, and finally considers the missal and its visually sophisticated and religiously complex miniatures as a whole. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A treasure of Romanesque art
The Stammhein Missal was painted in the 12th century in northern Germany at the monastery of Saint Michael at Hildesheim and remained in the abbey till 1803 when the monastery was secularized. This is an outstanding work of Romanesque art with a variety of full page miniatures all enhanced with liberal amounts of gold and silver leaf.

The original book is in excellent condition and currently resides in the Getty Museum. This small book on the manuscript takes you through the history of the missal, and illustrates all the main carpet pages of the book with most of the images in colour. It is not a full reproduction of the manuscript but it is enough to let you know that you are looking at an extraordinary book that has survived in remarkable condition and this is probably the closest most of us will ever get to such a lovely early manuscript like this.

Recommended if you want to know more about Romanesque illuminated manuscripts (they are very different from the later medieval books) or to get an insight into a book which is rarely otherwise seen in art and illumination books.
