5-0 out of 5 stars Super Inspiring and Educational
Digital Photo Art: Transform Your Images with Traditional & Contemporary Art Techniques
I loved this book, and although I am not a traditional or professional photographer, it gave me a ton of ideas of how to improve my photography skills as well as what to do with the photos as far as effects and printing methods.
I would say that one thing to know about this book is that it is really geared toward serious photographers as far as equipment goes. The author talks about filters and lenses and if you are like me and have a cheap point and shoot digital camera, and don't plan on camera equipment upgrades, it is meaningless.
Don't let that discourage you however, the images were inspiring, the printmaking techniques intriguing and the software manipulation ideas really fun! I would recommend this book to anyone interested in Photo Art.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiration
I have been a photographer for 50 years, and a Photoshop user for 15. I read several reviews before purchasing this book. I noted negative some opinion that claimed this book was inferior because it was not a great Photoshop book. I have to take exception to this. reading this book inspired me to push myself beyond the confines of "Photoshopping" images.
There is so much more to photography as an artistic medium, than simply cleaning and perfecting an image, and then printing it on white paper.

5-0 out of 5 stars A How-To-Make-Fine-Art Book
This is a great book. I have used this book for a couple of years now and was surprised at a few of the comments of other reviewers.

For the reviewer that said there was some Photoshop in it, but was disappointed that it wasn't an in-depth how-to Photoshop book:Yes, it is fine art oriented, not a Photoshop class. Some Photoshop techniques related to fine art are explained well and clearly so you can use them without difficulty. The book uses Photoshop tools well, but it isn't a Photoshop book.

For the reviewer that said it was dated:In spite of it being published a few years ago, almost everything in the book is still up-to-date, with the exception of some references to Studio Artist. If you want completely up-to-date, get Airey's Beginner's Guide to Digital Photo Art. Don't be fooled if you are not a beginner -- this book is still for you. The techniques are clearly explained, so a beginner can follow it well -- but the techniques explained are wonderful things that an experienced fine art photographer will enjoy thoroughly. I believe it works well WITH this book, but if I had to get only one, it would be Beginner's Guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
This is a fabulous, creative treasure chest!!!!She gives step by step instruction for each of her works. Each one turns out uniquely different from the original photos. They become one of a kind art pieces. She lists all of the products she uses, the vendors & what each product does in detail.Artwork by other digital artists are sprinkled through as well. It's a great resource that generates inspiration & creativity!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but you'll need more books then this one
This form of book concept has a high potential for today's amateur artist. I'm glad I bought it because it does contain a lot of useful information. However, I will buy a few more books to complete my "schooling" in marrying digital to traditional art. I found this book offers only a small amount to that concept. Here's what I found.

Cons...
i. [deleted, now listed as a pro, as point #5 - see update below]
ii. The book lacks step by step details on how to do certain things. If you don't know how to do it, your left guessing or going on the internet to figure it out.
iii. Way, way too much filler (repetition, photo fillers, white space etc...)
iv. The author spends way too much time on things that really do not matter and are not helpful.
v. The overall format of the book is good, but it does get disorganized here & there.
vi. Not enough follow through on why facts are presented: you get a simple "data dump" in some cases.

Pros...
i. The author has an exceptional knowledge of paper variety. Before reading this book, I knew business grade white Xerox paper & bond...
ii. The author does present some very good ideas of converging digital to traditional art.
iii. The price for the book is cheap for the info you get from it. If it saves you an hour or teaches you a technique that you use, the book has more then paid for itself.
iv. It is a high quality book (paperback, but nicely printed).
v. [update 6/7/2010 - I recently tried some of the software the author writes about (downloaded via trial versions on the web). Nik software is actually superb and I would now list the author's recommendations as a plus. This was once listed as a con point #1]. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars These Guys Know Their Stuff
These guys really know their stuff. This book really delivers. If you plan to make a film--of any sort--or if you are a student of film the valuable information contained in the pages of The Art of Technique is for you.

The book is written so as to be readable and understandable.Other books I've read like this are too technical or they get too artsy or self-centered or they are just plain boring. But not The Art of Technique. This book lays it out on the level. It reads like it's written by people who have real experience in making movies.

If you plan to roll your own or if you just want to understand what goes into the making of a film, you would be very well advised to have this book by your side.

This is the best book on film making I have ever read.First rate!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Textbook with a voice
This is a text that is best used in collaboration with actually just getting out there and shooting video and/or film.Movie making is a hands-on profession and this book is like listening to a seasoned instructor giving you inspirational and additional insight that compares, contrasts, and compliments real-world experiences. This is a textbook unlike many others and I believe I can explain why film schools may not want to use it.This book assumes you are passionate about film and that you have a drive to shoot and edit on your own as well as with formal instruction.Another way of stating this might be to say that this is a middle management film book, neither skeletal nor comprehensively loaded. This is a book written for film students who do not want a text to simply explain how to do something nor to teach them facts or elements of film that must be memorized to achieve success. The focus of this book is to aid the film student when a blend of practical and philosophical insight is needed. They treat film students like artists, not instructional technology specialists or snobbish film elitists. Thus, many people mayfind this book not practical enough for them.Others may want a book more heavy on theory, history, or world philosophies.
I learned much from the two authors of this text, and I was fortunate enough to have actually taken classes at American University when they were instructors of film classes and media writing classes.Reading this book is akin to reading the insights of established filmmakers rather than the theories of inexperienced teachers.I have read many film books and while many were very good and helpful, this is the only one I keep.

5-0 out of 5 stars A first-rate primer for the aspiring filmmaker
"The Art of Technique: An Aesthetic Approach to Film and Video Production," is more of a primer than it is a critique of cinema.Yes, there is a big difference between this volume by John S. Douglass and Gleen P. Harnden and "Film Art: An Introduction" by David Bordwell and Kristin Thompson. The latter utilizes literally hundreds of frames from both classic and relatively unknown films to demonstrate cinematic techniques."The Art of Technique" does the same thing with student models.Whether this has to do with the cost of using copyrighted images and/or transforming them into individual frames for use in a book, this is a major difference between the two textbooks. When Douglass and Harnden discuss something, like Ingmar Bergman's use of Extreme Close-ups (ECU) in "Scenes from a Marriage," they can only talk about the extraordinary intimacy it gave the production, without offering visual evidence to support their claim. However, the authors do use their "homemade" examples to good use at time; for example, when exploring the concept of framing they provide examples of "bad" shots (filled with distracting clutter) before showing better choices for the cinematographer.

"The Art of Technique" is divided into two main sections. After an introductory chapter on "Interpretation and Treatment," there are six chapters focusing on the various ways a film can tell a story, essentially pre-production considerations. There is a nice little section detailing the basic types of stories Hollywood tells over and over again ("Jack the Giant Killer," "Fish Out of Water," etc.).Clearly the emphasis here is more on production than criticism, which makes the orientation of this textbook more towards the filmmaker than the movie audience. This first section ends with a look at Mise en Scene and questions of design. In terms of concepts covered, separate from the issue of how those concepts are presented in the textbook, the authors provided a comprehensive, well-organized presentation.

The second half of the book covers "Techniques for Interpretation," which starts with a consideration of the trinity of how the camera, editing and lighting can be used for interpretation.Again, everything is here; I could not find a concept or technique that was an obviously glaring omission. The book concludes with a pair of chapters on Symbols and Significance, which get into the impact film can have on an audience. You might expect to find a glossary at the back of the book, but instead we have a pair of appendixes on Electricity and Measuring Light, which only serves to reaffirm that this book is geared towards the novice filmmaker. If you are looking for a textbook that because you are a budding film critic, then this is not going to be your first choice.I can even make the argument that by not saturating their textbook with frames from dozens of films, Douglass and Harden do their readers a favor, because instead of borrowing shots and techniques from the acknowledged masters of the art form, they are being asked to reinvent the wheel.Do not knock this, because that is basically how we think Orson Welles made "Citizen Kane."

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Overview
This book explores many aspects of filmmaking in a logical, easy-to-follow manner.A great find, albeit a bit pricy. I used it as my text for teaching a video class as it offers some aesthetic considerations for why techniques may or may not be used in a given situation. This approach helps to minimize the technique-euphoria beginners tend to have with techniques which are new to them (ala George Lucas in the new Star Wars...)

5-0 out of 5 stars good intro for the novice filmmaker
this book works very well as an introduction to the creative use of techniques for filmmaking.it is quite clear and concise and is not bogged down by too much technical details or dicussions on film theory.a goodstarting point. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An Introduction to Art Techniques
I was familiar with this excellent book from an art class and wanted a copy for my library. It is a through introduction to various art techniques.

I was disappointed however in the page quality.I ordered the hard cover edition, expecting the hard finish paper of the original edition (something that would stand up to repeated handling).Instead, the paper is what you find in a paper back pamphlet.Discouraging!A lesson about declining standards in the book publishing industry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome for the Wannabe Art Enthusiast
I have always wanted to paint & draw but never knew or learned the techniques. This book has everything. What brushes to use what kind of paper, what kind of pencils to use, how to make your own frames, how to use color pencils, etc. The book is paperback as indicated above, and it has great pictures and is enough depth for a beginner (like myself.) Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive!
This book has great information on a lot of topics! I use it in a few ways. As a practicing and selling artist, and it's a good place for ideas, inspirations and technique brush-ups. I also teach community art classes and it's great when I need project ideas, or even need to refresh myself or teach myself techniques for a certain class. This would also be a great book for a budding artist looking for an area of concentration. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Long Winded Essay
Of the numerous books I've read on the subject, this is by far the worst. It's basically 200 pages of the repeatious advice to study the work of the great masters - but don't copy their technics or styles, just develop your own. The illustrations found in this book are so small, you literally need a magnifying glass to study most of them.
If you are looking for some instruction in how to develop your own composition, technics, or style, you'll find books like "Rendering In Pen and Ink," or "The Technical Pen" much more beneficial. Both have numerous full page illustrations of works by the "masters". If you're a beginner, or simply want to doodle, I would recommend some of Clauda Nice's books.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Review of Pen Drawing Styles
This is a good review of pen drawing, but the pens and materials mentioned are much out of date. The drawings in the book are excellent, but they are rather small.A larger book would have made viewing the drawings easier. It is difficult to appreciate the illustrations when they are so small. On one page the author places several pictures, smaller than postage stamp size, next to one another to show the different styles of the artists. This is a great idea, but with the size being so small a lot is missed.

The text is good, and it does explain a lot about pen drawing; however, the artists mentioned are gone and it isn't easy to show modern styles (1970 forward for example) when the book itself is from early in the 20th century. The text also explains how to get a job in illustration; but this advice is ancient and the magazines it speaks of are no longer around.Too bad, because they were great magazines.

A good book with a lot of good advice on illustration with pen and ink; however, a lot of it is out of date and the size is too small to make really good use of the drawings shown.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of The Art and Techniqu of Pen Drawing
Before I bought this book I had absolutely no experience in ink drawing, but had always wanted to try it out.Upon receiving this book I began reading it and checking aout all the different drawings in the book.I have been practicing a lot and I found this book very helpful in explaining different techniques that help to make your drawings more realistic.i would definitley recomend this book to anyone wanting to learn to draw with ink as alternative to pencil drawing. I personally find ink drawing much more enjoyable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Splendid illustrations, very interesting text!
This little, inexpensive book is a paperback republication of the 1927 "The art of pen drawing". It is, then, a bit quaint, but in a good sense. It is the kind of art guide that nobody writes any longer: very well written, witty, entertaining, a bit "aristocratic". Not just one of the many, dry, step by step art books that are way too common nowadays. On the other hand, this also means that as a guide this book is not really too useful, especially for beginners.

The MANY illustrations are awesome and worth more that the book's price by themselves. It will be a very welcome companion on my bookshelves to the "bigger" and even more impressive Guptill's "Rendering in pen and ink", which you really want to own if you like ink. It's a pity that there are so little art books out there with good collections of ink art, which I truly love.

I am really happy I purchased this little precious paperback. Highly recommended if you love ink. ... Read more

Product Description
An in-depth, eye-opening look at Purchasing in the 21st Century.

This invaluable resource demonstrates how to improve purchasing operations through supplier scheduling and the integration of purchasing with other initiatives such as Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRP II), Just-in-Time (JIT), and Total Quality Management (TQM). Along with new material on emerging technologies, vendor managed inventory, and supply chain management, seasoned consultant John E. Schorr offers a solid framework for bettering purchasing systems through a rigorous evaluation of current business structures. Comprehensive and completely up-to-date, Purchasing in the 21st Century, Second Edition provides invaluable insight and advice on:

  • Implementing accurate supplier scheduling
  • Using MRP II/JIT/TQMto dramatically increase performance of on-time deliveries, to decrease lead times, reduce lot sizes, and achieve an overall cost reduction of purchased materials
  • Employing synchronized deliveries in conjunction with a Kanban system
  • Selecting the best performance measurements for suppliers.

Filled with helpful examples and case studies of such leading companies as Steelcase and Corning Glass, this is must reading for anyone involved in creating, implementing, and improving purchasing operations.

In order to outperform the competition today, companies must be like finely tuned machines, composed of quality parts that work together both seamlessly and in unison. Until recently, and for most organizations, this wasn't the case when it came to two crucial components: buyers and suppliers. However, with growing attempts to improve operations across the board, this once adversarial relationship is evolving into a more cohesive partnership. In this comprehensive resource, now revised and expanded, author John E. Schorr takes an in-depth look at this important change in perspective, explores techniques currently being implemented to improve performance, and focuses on what's around the corner for Purchasing in the 21st Century.

In the past, buyers and suppliers operated with different sets of numbers, different priorities, and different agendas, resulting in ongoing conflicts, poor service levels, and, perhaps, most obviously, a concerted disadvantage in the marketplace. Realizing that purchasing can be key to seeing significant improvements in operations and competitive capabilities, companies have begun to leverage the role of purchasing to achieve improvements in supplier quality, product delivery, and new product development.

Purchasing in the 21st Century, Second Edition offers practical information on improving purchasing operations. With complete coverage of the tools and techniques needed, the book illustrates how to implement supplier scheduling, as well as carry out purchasing in Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRP II), Just-in-Time (JIT), and Total Quality Management (TQM) environments. It also provides essential details on supply chain management and vendor managed inventory, two new concepts being used in purchasing departments around the country.

Perhaps, most significantly, Purchasing in the 21st Century, Second Edition helps you create a sound purchasing operation with a solid framework that includes a rigorous evaluation of current systems. You'll learn to coordinate with your suppliers' production schedules, ensure supplier quality assurance, reduce freight costs, and effectively use electronic data interchange and the Internet. To illustrate how others have altered and refined their purchasing approach, you'll find detailed case studies of such prominent companies as Steelcase and Corning Glass.

Purchasing in the 21st Century, Second Edition gives purchasing executives and their counterparts across the company state-of-the-art guidelines for creating and effectively managing their purchasing operation. A timely examination, this is essential reading for anyone involved in the purchasing process. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Classic
This is a classic, classic ski book and should be read as a historical reference, a milestone, but nothing more. The modern ski technique is vastly different and much more efficient for the newer shaped skis.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible about skiing
As a former racer and an experienced ski-teacher in Europe, I have benefited enormously from this book that was recommended to me in person by Prof. Georges Joubert when we met back in 1983. Later in 1993, when I mentioned this book to then the director of the ski-school at Grouse Mountain near Vancouver, B.C. Canada, the comment was 'Ah, the bible...' Just a glance on the technical analyses on the last ~100 pages will convince you that this is still the most resourceful aide to anyone seriously engaged in ski-teaching and ski-coaching. Yet, the first few chapters are easy to read and follow by anyone novice willing to learn skiing by his/herself, which was the original intention of this book.

Yes indeed, the Bible! I have no intention to deny many other excellent books written about various aspects of skiing. However, for ultimate understanding of the details of the alpine ski technique this book is a must.

5-0 out of 5 stars You'll find every thing on ski technique even after years
I know Georges Joubert, he is still very present on the scenary of ski competition in 2002.(at more than Eighty !) This book contain analysis which will lead you to understand fundamentals and key drivers of competition best practises.
Starting from the basics, I have got the chance to be coached by Georges for two years , I caught this gentle touch that keep me close to competition high standard requirements. 5-0 out of 5 stars The first and last word on modern ski technique.
This book is the absolute bible of modern ski technique. The best racers today are doing no more or less than what is in this book.If you want to become intellectually involved with skiing, then this book is better than all the meat-head instructors in Colorado, all the ski tips in the magazines, all the other ski instruction books put together.I wish Poudre or somebody would republish it, because I am always recommending it to beginning (and better) skiers, and my copy is falling apart from rereading it so many times. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Technique and Art of Organ playing
I am a College professor who has taught piano and pipe organ for over 40 years. I have used just about every organ method book out there. The Technique and Art of Organ playing is older than dirt. Written by Clarence Dickenson, it contains eveything the would be, serious organist needs to know. This is not a method book for those who want to play Theater organ music, jazz, or popular music. It is a method book for the "classical", "church" organist. He covers in detail the four basic methods of organ playing: Manual - Hand technique (Differentiated from the piano technique) Registration - The art of understanding which stops or voices to use in combination with what piece of literature. Pedal - The technqiue of how to play the pedals efficiently and skillfully. And last the Art of how to put it all together to make music.
It's all in one book, and it's a must for any serious organist. I've used other method books and they all come up short to Dickenson's work.

Product Description

Over 25 unique effects illustrated with process photos, finished examples, and variations.

Mixed Emulsions is a follow up to Karen Michel's book, The Complete Guide to Altered Imagery. Mixed Emulsions: Altered Art Techniques for Photographic Imagery takes a slightly different tact, bringing traditional and digital photography front and center, showing the many ways that photographic imagery can be manipulated, not electronically, but using various art materials and techniques. The chapters explore ways to add color (paints, oil sticks, watercolors, inks), ways to add texture (embossing powders, gessos, pastes, wax), and special effects (printing on unusual substrates, imprinting, photo mosaics, using tissue, fabric, cardboard).

Altered art continues to grow as an area of interest for many kinds of crafters.

2-0 out of 5 stars I will be returning this book
I found this book to be a whole lot of "look at what I did" and too little "look what YOU can do".There are instructions, but not nearly enough, not clear enough and not thorough enough.I hate to return things but this is definately going back.

Product Description
From head to toe, the human form, in all its complexities, is visually simplified to such a degree in this remarkable workbook that even complete beginners will soon be able to draw accurate, well-proportioned faces and figures every time they try.Avoiding complex charts of muscles and bones that are more helpful to doctors than to artists, this book's refreshing approach teaches anatomy from a cartoonist/illustrator's point of view. For example, there are many large and small muscles in the neck, all rendered in great detail in most anatomy books, but here, master teacher Christopher Hart shows only the four that are visible and need to be drawn. His clear instruction helps readers to visualize and portray shifting body weight in a pose without the need of a model, and instead of showing a mass of facial muscles and bones, he translates them into the simple planes an artist needs to draw a range of expressive faces. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars The Title is Wishful Thinking
Struggling with drawing the human figure and looking for easy answers I was suckered into buying this book by the positive reviews. It's one of the weakest drawing instructionals I've ever seen. It's style is heroic comic book. That's not bad in itself, as you can learn a lot of proportion and foreshortening from good line art. The problem, besides poor drawing, is the lessons(?) go something like this: draw a circle, now divide that into thirds and "poof", here's the finished drawing! No real instruction, no real system. I found this book useless and even embarrassing to have on the bookshelf. There is no easy answer to drawing the human figure except drawing the human figure and learning from your mistakes. Don't bother with this book, there are better instructions out there.

2-0 out of 5 stars Just so-so
The book does have some insights into human anatomy, however it is all bland with no feel for it.
Most importantly it concentrates more into male anatomy and not give you a healthy dose of the female anatomy as well.
As a male artist, studying my own body will be more educational than this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars beginners guide
this book is not helpful to anyone who is a serious artist. if you want to get good at drawing, want to learn more about anatomy, get an anatomy book. this book is suited for people who don't really care about anatomy, and just want to know enough to scrape by.
I did not like this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book, not my artistic style though
The drawings are wayyyyy old school. Nothing like the comic book looks yyou see now. It reminds me of that old school superman show where he jumps on a trampoline and then flies into the air. So for the guys body it's very old school western muscular (so not very. not much of a six pack and stuff)

i would have loved this book if he had used the drawing style of some of his other books!

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful, but not for "serious" artists
This books has a very specific function, and is not for everyone. I would reccomend this book for any casual artists who want to draw cartoon or comic-book / manga style art, and need to reference a basic anatmony.

This books is NOT for people who want to do realistic art. This books is NOT for someone who wants to draw a specfic style of art (i.e. how to draw manga). This books is NOT for people who needs to learn how to draw from the ground up.

This books is best suited to casual artiststs / fan artists who already have an idea of how to draw, and already have their own style, but need a reference for simplified anatomy seen in comic books and manga. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What artists work with, clearly explained
There are plenty of dictionaries of artists around, in book form or on the web. Far fewer are the books to explain how fine and applied artists go about their business and define the techniques and materials artists use. This is essential knowledge for young people preparing to study art or art history, and I'd certainly recommend this book to them. But for everyone who loves paintings and other art objects, the extra technical knowledge this dictionary gives will add to the enjoyment and enlightenment gained from visiting a gallery or museum. It is an excellent introduction to a complex subject, by Ralph Mayer of Yale University School of Art, and first appeared in 1991. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars persuasive and profitable telephone communications
This book has some sensible advice and workable techniques for persausive and profitable telephone communications that you can use right away, regardless of your industry, particulary if you rely on cold-calling to get that appointment. The sections that I've found helpful include developing a selling telephone image, how to avoid language that sounds "salesly" or threatening, leaving voicemail messages that have impact, how to deal with screeners to get to the correct decision-makers.Even better are the templates that you fill in, depending upon your product or service, to stimulate interest at the beginning of your call, using a recommended menu of words and phrases (this was invalable for me).Other sections I have dog-eared include setting appointments over the phone, handling follow-up calls, dealing with different objections, and some great closing ideas.A great investment.
