Arthritis is or becomes more or less painful to deal and cope with as time passes, but typically worsens over time as the disease progresses. It can be extremely painful and debilitating.

Pain can flare up at different times of the day or night. It can hurt even when sitting or lying down. The pain is undeniably present - it is chronic and ongoing.

And there are varying levels or intensities of pain, different for each and every arthritis sufferer.

And as pain levels and symptoms vary so much, INDIVIDUAL action plans are needed!

An attitude shift from 'patient' to AGENT is needed to take proactive steps to reduce your arthritic pain and other symptoms as much as you possibly can!

With the assistance and information in this book, you too can turn from PATIENT to AGENT of healing! You can take advantage of the incredible wealth of information and practical advice in this book to take you to a new level of vitality and quality of life!

As early as Arthritis for Dummies's first page--ayellow tear card entitled "Cheat Sheet"--you know you're gettinguseful information. The cheat sheet gives quickie tips on sevenhelpful topics: "Before Agreeing to Surgery," "10 Ways to ManageArthritis," "10 Arthritis Myths to Watch out For," "10 Super Foods toHelp Combat Arthritis," "10 Crackerjack New Treatments," "Talking toYour Doctor About Alternative Therapies," and "Identifying FalseClaims for Alternative Therapies." Arthritis for Dummiesexplores all of these topics, and many more, in detail.

Theauthors, husband-and-wife team Barry Fox, Ph.D. (The Arthritis Cure,The 20/30 Fat & FiberDiet Plan) and Nadine Taylor, M.S., R.D., a registereddietician, explain the different forms of arthritis andarthritis-related conditions and how to work effectively with yourdoctor. Most of the rest of the book is an easy-to-read guidebook todozens of treatments and pain-management strategies. Rather thandiscussing arthritis treatment from a purely Western medicineapproach, the authors also detail Eastern healing systems, lifestylestrategies (including illustrations of exercises), and alternativetherapies. Everything from Ayurveda to Zyloprim is in here. A drawbackis that the authors do not always differentiate between remedies thatare backed by scientific evidence and those that have only anecdotalsupport. --Joan Price ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Arthritis Dummies Book Review
It was well worth the $$ and book was in great condition as described it would be.I would suggest this seller to others.

1-0 out of 5 stars I resent this
This book is an insult. I am a dummy by no one's estimation. However, I have two different forms of arthritis. I developed them without ever reading a word on the topic, as I'm sure many arthritis sufferes have. That there would be a book offering instructions on getting arthritis for the feeble minded is an insult to all the noises I make getting out of low chairs!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and Practical
I've had arthritis for a long time, so I was happy to find this well-rounded, informative and practical arthritis book. I learned more from this book than I have from all the others I've read - combined. It gives a good overview of all kinds of arthritis, the ways they diagnose it and treatments. It also talks about the drugs used for the disease, their pros and cons. There's also good information on supplements, exercise, body alignment, and more. I especially like the nice balance the authors struck between traditional and alternative medicine. There are a lot of new ideas in the book I hadn't heard of before - some of which worked well for my arthritis. I heartily recommend this book to anyone who has arthritis.

2-0 out of 5 stars The good, the bad and the equivocal...all rolled into one!
I found this book to be informative and entertaining but also somewhat disturbing. There seems to be a tendency to overemphasize so-called "alternative" therapy, and the information is presented in such a way as to cajole the unwary reader into thinking that mainstream and alternative treatments are equivalent. Curiously, neither of the authors is a physician, and the book hardly mentions the existence of the "rheumatologist",i.e.,the physician who specializes in diagnosis and treatment of rheumatic diseases. I found this surprising at best, and also a bit offensive. It was clear that this is not a completely objective or balanced guide to arthritis and its management. ... Read more

Product Description

This book--intended to dispel the mystique and folklore surrounding arthritis--is the first to explain clearly the scientific aspects of arthritis research and treatment. Brewerton tells the intriguing story of arthritis research, from the days before germs were recognized as causes of disease and when reasons for inflammation were obscure, to the present, when breakthroughs in genetics, epidemiology, X-ray crystallography, cell biology, and molecular biology support major advances in research and treatment. He also addresses the human element, discussing the role in arthritis of such factors as age, gender, emotions, pain, and personality. Brewerton ends the story on a hopeful note, carefully explaining the prospects for prevention and treatment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can I give this book extra stars? It's one of the greats.
If you're at all interested in medical science, reading this book will be a wonderful experience. I would expect this to be true even if you don'thave arthritis (I don't).

I learned quite a bit about the immune system, the nervous system, and about how first-rate minds think about researchproblems. Of course, I also learned about arthritis, too, as you mightexpect.

What I think I will remember best, though, is the letter fromPamela Bjorkman in chapter 20, where she describes her work, over thecourse of 8 years, in determining the structure of the HLA protein moleculeusing X-ray crystallography.

No, that's not true, I'll remember havingmy mind engaged, thinking along with Derrick Brewerton, as he lays out theresearch into arthritis, researcher by researcher, step by step. Chapter 20will still be an exciting high point, though.

And this might sound funny, but I particularly enjoyed seeing pictures of all the researchers inscientific medicine, from Pasteur to the present day.

Since each chapterwas quite famously interesting, I hope you don't mind if I list the tableof contents so you can get a better idea of the scope and focus of thiseminently re-readable book:

3-0 out of 5 stars A mixed bag...
Some parts of this book were good and some not so good.

Part 3, 4 and 5 are good.Part Three talks about aerobic exercise and 4 and 5 give details on exercises you can do for specific body parts and in special situations. The instructions are clear and there are good diagrams.Unfortuately, they don't give any advice on how many repetitions to start with and how many to build up to and which exercise to move on to when a particular excercise becomes too easy.

My problem is with Part 1.It has you go through some quizzes to put yourself in a "level" which they claim will help you pick or develop a program of exercises that suits your needs. But after you figure out your level, they never mention it again. There are two sample programs, one for level 4 (in bed) and one for level 2 (moderately active) and that's it.No program suggestions for the other levels and the excercises themselves are not given a label.

A bit disappointing.

But the exercises I am doing for my particular problem areas are good.I think the exercise sections make the book worth the money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Basic Exercises
The exercises in this book are very basic stretching and flexibility exercises. They work well for me when I am having flare ups of my joints. Normally I exercise more aggressively. There are many varied exercises in this book, exercises cover every motion of every joint. Would recommend.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for new exercisers
I purchased this book when I learned I have arthritis in my spine, but I found that the book doesn't recommend anything I'm not already doing in yoga class. I'm going to hand it on to my mother, however, especially for the hand exercises.

5-0 out of 5 stars All the right moves
The best set of arthritis exercises I've found. They work to relieve my pain and improve my flexibility! Provides for individual adaptation, and they can be done in bed, on a chair, standing, or in the water.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful book for Arthritis
Helpful book particularly for those newly given the diagnosis of arthritis.Helpful information on how to help yourself with exercises and other recommendations. ... Read more
