The Klee Universe
We were fortunate to have obtained a windfall of 9 Klee books:
One of 2 Rizzoli Klee art books.This one by the Klee foundation curator.

1st there is no biography at all.Just a thin basic picture book.41 b&w / 47 color reproductions.Some spanning two pages while others crammed 5 to a page.I don't understand the publishers logic in the layout.

But there are some rare reproductions:'fruit on the ground'1938,'poor angel' 1939,'St. George' 1936.

All in all worth the $3.99.

This handsome book celebrates the collection of early-20th-century paintings in the Lenbachhaus in Munich by the Blue Rider, the name taken by a group of avant-garde artists led by Wassily Kandinsky in 1911. Their motivating force was a revolutionary "urge to abstraction." Even today, the intense colors and wild compositions of their paintings have a powerful impact; in their day they were sensational. In 1912 the group published an influential manifesto on the direction of modern art; it included articles on music and the arts of different cultures, especially primitive art, in an attempt to, in Kandinsky's words, "bring down the barriers between the arts." The story of the Blue Rider, told by the director and curator of the Lenbachhaus, re-creates the excitement of the passionate young painters as they expounded their theories. Paul Klee (1879-1940) is one of the most significant and best-loved artists of the twentieth century. For the nine volumes of this landmark project, the Berne-based Paul Klee Foundation has researched the artist's 9,600 drawings, prints, watercolors, and oil paintings, allowing the artist's complete works to be assembled and published for the first time. Each volume contains an introduction in German and English, an explanation of the catalogue system, a German-English glossary, a bibliography, and indexes. All the entries are illustrated and include catalogue numbers, technical descriptions, measurements, references to related works, details of provenance and location, relevant literature, and a list of exhibitions and auctions in which works have appeared. Klee's own entries from the catalogue he maintained from 1911 onwards are also included, and the most important works are illustrated in color. Klee's work during the years 1931-33 reflects his travels to Sicily, Venice, and the South of France.
