Product Description
Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (July 15, 1606 - October 4, 1669) was a Dutch painter and etcher. He is generally considered one of the greatest painters and printmakers in European art history and the most important in Dutch history.
His contributions to art came in a period that historians call the Dutch Golden Age.

Having achieved youthful success as a portrait painter, his later years were marked by personal tragedy and financial hardships. Yet his etchings and paintings were popular throughout his lifetime, his reputation as an artist remained high, and for twenty years he taught nearly every important Dutch painter.Rembrandt's greatest creative triumphs are exemplified especially in his portraits of his contemporaries, self-portraits and illustrations of scenes from the Bible. His self-portraits form a unique and intimate biography, in which the artist surveyed himself without vanity and with the utmost sincerity.

Product Description
This study examines the causes, circumstances, and effects of the 1656 bankruptcy of Rembrandt van Rijn. Following a highly successful early career, Rembrandt's idiosyncratic art and lifestyle came to dominate his reputation. His evasion of responsibility to his creditors was so socially disreputable that laws in Amsterdam were quickly altered. The poor management of his finances magnified other difficulties that he had with family, paramours, friends, neighbors, and patrons. Collectively, Rembrandt's economic and social exigencies affected his living and working environment, his public station, and his art. This study examines all of these aspects of Rembrandt's bankruptcy, including his marketing practices, the appreciation of his work, and his relations with patrons, in addition to the details of the bankruptcy itself. Several patterns of short-sighted decision-making emerge as Rembrandt conducted his affairs within a constantly changing framework of relationships, a shifting set of obligations, and evolving artistic pursuits. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Rembrandt a product of his times
Paul Crenshaw's book on Rembrandt's bankruptcy was a very thorough, detailed account of how and why Rembrandt went into debt. I have studied art history for many years and thought that I truely understood why Rembrandt died in poverty. Crenshaw's book ,however, opened my eyes to very insightful information about Rembrandt the man rather than the kindly man we see in his self portraits. Experts and history buffs alike who love Rembrandt will enjoy this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Eye glance of a master
Rembrandt Drawings is a superb collection of drawings by the great Dutch master. They are intimate sketches which depict a glance. They are completely modern, predating the technique of the French modernists, and catch that first critical moment when the essential of a scene is grasped. Above all there is the instant seizure of a moment of humanity, a fleeting expression, query, puzzlement, wonder, but, strangely not a smile.
Three of the drawings belong to the more than 90 self portraits in which Rembrandt traced his biography. One is an image of the artist at the age of 23 and it is informative to compare with the oil painting which followed, a display of genius in handling light and shadow. But for all that, the naive sketch catches a mood that no longer exists in the magnificent painting.
The book is a treasure to browse and to ponder the profound humanity it contains. Its simplicity is an invitation to take a pencil and trace the same and similar lines, to explore the creative mind of one of the greatest artists who ever lived.

4-0 out of 5 stars Finally, In Color
Rembrandt's drawings, though monochromatic, deserve to be in color. The variations in his pen lines and washes are part of their greatness, and I've waited for decades to see a book like this. I'm surprised it's in hardcover (I have about a thousand Dover books, all paperbacks) so it costs a few extra dollars, and it's no surprise that at least most of the reproductions are generations removed from the originals, but I'm hardly complaining. Up till now I haven't found a complete color collection of his drawings, and he is one of history's greatest (and most subtle) draftsmen, so this is a gift to the world. If we ever get a book like this reproduced from the originals, it will probably cost over $100.
And regarding the artwork, I'll quote my elder colleague and master draftsman, Don Lagerberg: "The older I get, the better Rembrandt gets." ... Read more

Product Description
In 2007, the internationally renowned filmmaker Peter Greenaway (The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover; The Draughtsman's Contract) will release Nightwatching, a feature-length study of the life and loves of the eighteenth-century Dutch painter, Rembrandt, via his controversial masterpiece, "The Night Watch," an ensemble painting which depicts the identification of a murderer. According to Greenaway, the painting is "Rembrandt's J'accuse." There is a conspiracy painted in Rembrandt's The Night Watch. The sinister title of the painting alone suggests we should look for it . Is this a painting, or an act of theater, or a still from a film?" In this accompanying artist's book, Greenaway offers fans a glimpse into his own artistic process, with written analyses of each of the characters in the painting followed by a wealth of enlarged, close-up details in which brush marks practically jump from the page. ... Product Description
This extensively illustrated volume provides the definitive account of Rembrandt`s etchings and their significance within the artist`s larger body of work. With eloquence and deep insight, Christopher White analyzes the technical, stylistic, and iconographic features of selected etchings, traces their close relationship with the artist`s drawings, and reveals how Rembrandt made the medium uniquely his own.Amazon.com Review
It is timely that Christopher White has chosen to revise his study of Rembrandt's etching 30 years after it was first published. This second edition of what quickly became an authoritative text incorporates critical reaction to its predecessor as well as the continuing scholarship of the Rembrandt Research Project. There have been 16 catalogues raisonnés of the artist's prints and innumerable exhibition publications, making his etchings the most catalogued works of art in the world, but few other books have considered "how" as well as "what" and set the works in a historical and personal context. White, a leading authority on 17th-century Dutch and Flemish art who edited Rembrandt by Himself, is the ideal man for the job. The line "Would you like to see my etchings?" has never sounded so appealing.

White divides his attention into six considerable chapters: technique, history, portraiture, genre, nudes, and landscape. The most valuable, and groundbreaking, is the first, in which his explanations of Rembrandt's working methods and techniques give the illusion of peering over the artist's shoulder, such is the vividness with which details of biting, drypoint, and choice of papers come alive in his accessible and learned prose. The patient care invested in not just assembling but attractively presenting the images mirrors the attentions of the etcher, who undertakes a painstaking process with a slow-burning excitement, always with the uncertainty of the end product--something for which Rembrandt's temperament seemed entirely suited. In his later life he abandoned his habit of careful pre-planning and allowed the means to influence the ends. This flexibility was entirely characteristic of Rembrandt as an artist across the board; never afraid to experiment, he had reasons for working that were as pragmatic as they were visionary, and prints were the most successful reproductive propagandists for their maker's art. White's book, as luxurious to handle as to study or peruse, is still the definitive standard by which evaluation of Rembrandt's etchings and their relationship with his drawings and paintings must be judged. It is definitively art history at its most rewarding and enthralling. --David Vincent, Amazon.co.uk ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, especially in terms of graphics reproductions
The strongest quality about this book is probably its graphical reproductions.A luxurious smorgasbourg of reproductions of Rembrandt's etchings provide a thorough, comprehensive display of Rembrandt's mysterious artistic wizardry. These reproductions are also of amazing quality: the printing is extremely sharp and crisp, imparting a 3-dimensional feel to the etchings that is absolutely critical for bringing them out.The quality of the graphical reproductions is really considerably superior to the high-quality reproductions given in the less expensive Dover edition of Rembrandt's etchings.

The text is also readable and interesting, although mainly I paid attention to the etchings and graphics ....Of particular interest (to me, at least) is White's explanation of the etching process, including a full-color photo of one of Rembrandt's surviving copper etchings of a reclining nude.

Another nice thing about this book in general is that it was not only written by one who is fascinated by and an expert in etching, but also one who had worked in museums and had special access to these etchings for photography purposes, which may account for their reproductive excellence. It's a big, glossy, deluxe coffee-table book that's worth the price.

Product Description
1930. Van Loon gives us the thrilling story of the great artist whose famous signature R.V.R. on any picture makes it priceless. He tells about the son of a Dutch miller who rose to fame, who tasted the fruits of success and prosperity and sank to the trials of bankruptcy and utter want. A lavish spender, a generous giver, a constant friend to all in need, he found himself alone when he needed friends most. Six drunken grave diggers lowered his cheap coffin into the earth. The book is full of high spirit, eager thinking, laughter, scorn, reason, kindness, observation, shrewdness, courage, love of adventure, confidence in processes of the mind, and interest in the methods of the heart. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Rembrandt's latter years
This biography was written to exorcise an obsession faced by the author after the great painter's death. It was never intended to be published, and there are spots when it is painfully apparent that Van Loon was no writer by profession. However, the very fact that we have here a memoir written by the Rembrandt family physician, makes this a most intimate account of the unfortunate Rembrandt's waning days.

The obsession gripping Van Loon after Rembrandt died, a penniless nobody in society's eyes, was mainly that such a wealthy nation would so abuse one of its own greatest men as to let him starve while richly rewarding others of much less talent. The book is a fascinating account of Rembrandt's struggles with finances and with the narrow mores of the clergy of the day.

The circumstances under which we enter the artist's inner circle are somber, yet the book has many lighthearted examples of Rembrandt's eccentricities and his all-too-temporary successes. The author digresses occasionally into an account of his own life, rather than sticking strictly to Rembrandt's, however, these passages are charming and give a very realistic view of the political and economic aspects of those years in Dutch history.

The book ends rather ironically, with the author mentioning another area in which his country may have missed the boat -- he chronicles how the powers that be negotiated a trade with England of the Dutch possession Niew Ansterdam for some seemingly more profitable tract in Suriname.Of course, the English renamed their new posession "New York".

All in all, an unquestionably delightful account, not just for the art-lover, but the history buff as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars a very interesting book for viewing history
That is a book not only talking about a great artist but also talking about the unique thought of a Dutchman who lived 500 years ago. It is a book of that time's folk history. You may get a vivid picture of Dutch life over the time tunnel. It also can help you understand the Dutchs at present time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Detailed description of the times during Rembrandt's life.
Endearing re-telling of Rembrandt's life by a loving friend of his. This story is not an impartial and academic view of the artist but rather an intimate description of the everyday life of Rembrandt and those whosurrounded him during his time. Some understood the genius and loved him, others considered him no less than a heretic follower of Satan andeverybody else in between is mentioned in this wonderfull diary that hadnot been meant to ever be published.

who attempted (unsuccessfully) to discharge Rembrandt's bankruptcy. For me, this represents another aspect of the story of mankind. ... Read more
