Editorial Review Product Description The authors analyze the forces affecting the demand for, and supply of, staples such as rice, vegetable oils and protein meals. Rice is the most important staple in Asia and so the authors pay particular attention to the effects of rice production strategies and trade policies on food security. They examine the implications of trade liberalization in the ASEAN free trade area and in East Asia on agricultural trade and food security. They also discuss the implications of China's ongoing economic transition on its intra-provincial and international agricultural trade, and its policy on self-sufficiency. Food Security in Asia provides a timely evaluation of the food security issue which will be of interest to scholars of Asian studies, agricultural economics and international economics. |

Editorial Review Product Description This volume explores commercial relations between the United States and China from the eighteenth century until 1949, fleshing out with facts the romantic and shadowy image of "the China trade." These nine chapters by specialists in the field have developed from papers they presented at a conference supported by the national Committee on American-East Asian Relations. The work begins with an Introduction by John K. Fairbank, then moves on to analysis of the old China trade up to the American Civil War, centering on traditional Chinese exports of tea and silk. A second section deals with American imports into China--cotton textiles and textile-related goods, cigarettes, kerosene. Finally, the impact of the trade on both countries is assessed and the operations of American-owned and multinational companies in China are examined. For both the United States and China, the economic importance of the trade proves to have been less than the legend might suggest. |

Editorial Review Product Description As multilateral negotiations become increasingly complex and protracted, preferential trade agreements have become the centerpiece of trade diplomacy. Pushing beyond tariffs into deep integration and beyond regionalism into a web of bilateral deals, these agreements are raising concerns about coercion by bigger players. This study examines American, European, and Asian approaches to preferential trade agreements and their effect on trade, investment, and economic welfare. The book draws on the rich field of theoretical works but also fills a gap in the literature by examining in detail the actual substance of agreements negotiated and envisaged. With bilateralism in trade driven by foreign policy, environmental, and social concerns, as well as market access objectives, the key question is how the various negotiating forums interact. This volume argues that preferential agreements can complement the multilateral system -- but only if that system is strong enough to continue to reduce barriers to trade and strengthen rules that limit the distorting effects of bilateralism. |
