5-0 out of 5 stars There are "Lowly Mosses" growing on Mars (according to this vintage book)
I like this book for it's beautiful illustrations and the simplicity of explanations. It also has some interesting inaccuracies which would make it perhaps add to it's collectibility. THIS BOOK WAS WRITTEN PRIOR TO MAN LANDING ON THE MOON. Pages 22-23 have an illustration of men in space suits holding long ice picks and leaping on some mountains on the moon. In the background is a red rocket ship which has landed on the moon. The caption states, "The first explorers will find the moon a vst desert, with lofty mountains and big craters dotting the dusty plains. The Moon's weak gravity will allow the explorers to move in great leaps."

The chapter on MARS: PLANET OF MYSTERY, is interesting as well:
Page 27 explains, "Mars has no rivers, no oceans, or lakes. But it has a tilt like Earth's and therefore has seasons. When it is winter in one hemisphere, ice or snw covers the area around the pole. This polar cap is probably less than a foot deep, but it contains nearly all the water on the planet! In spring, the ice cap begins to melt. Through the telescopes, we see the dark greenish patches appear along the edges of the cap. These are perhaps areas covered by green moses--the only life believed to exist on the planet...As autum comes, the greenish areas turn brown. As winter sets in, winds carry the water back to the pole, and there it freezes again."

The next chapter covers "MEN OF MARS" It discusses how people thought the canals seen on mars must be irrigation ditches to lead water from the melting snow caps to the farmers fields..."But few astronomers take these ideas seriously...In 1956 Mars came closer to earth than it had come in many years. Astronomers all over the world watched it through telesopes, photographed it, and studied its light with spectroscopes. STILL THEY FOUND NO SURE SIGN THAT THERE IS ANY LIFE ON MARS EXCEPT FOR LOWLY MOSSES...But even if there are no people on Mars, we can look forward to the day when Earth men may explore it."

I think this book is a great collectors piece to contrast our view of the solar system in the 1950's vs now, and how far we have come. It is also lovely for its beautiful illustrations.

What a great fun-to-read book!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Just Gruesome Enough for a 1st/2nd Grader
One of the things fascinating to children, especially boys, is the potential of really loud booms that might just wipe out life as we know it on our planet. And killer asteroids certainly fall into this category. This book is almost certain to attract the attention of young boys in the first few grades.

The book has a certain boy attracting sensationalism in its style but is scientifically correct and points out the current thinking of the majority of scientists as they consider the likelihood of impacts by killer asteroids. A fair amount of attention is paid to the Chicxulub Crater that is generally believed to have ended the age of the dinasaurs.

The book points out that asteroid strikes like this one only occur about once every 50 to 100 million years. Still it's been 65 million years.

All in all, a book that should please the scientifically or gruesome youngster. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Two Thumbs Up!!
I am a librarian, an amateur astronomer, and a parent. In the past month I have reviewed no fewer than 11 (eleven) books on the subjects of meteors, asteroids, and comets, written for young readers. This one is the best of the lot. Design is clean and attractive. The book features excellent illustrations, lists, and charts. Text is easy to read. Information is more complete and accurate than any of the others. The detail is sufficient but not overbearing, Lots of interesting trivia asides. Best for upper elementary(grades 5-6)and intermediate school students. Not too advanced for a smart 4th grader, and not too simple for an adult.
This one gets both my thumbs up!

3-0 out of 5 stars Can You Say "Vega?"
Vee-ga or Vay-ga?Kerrod won't tell you in his series of "Planet Library" books. Despite it's lack of proncunciation guides, the series-- like "Asteroids, Comets, and Meteors" for example -- is verywell written with a reader-friendly layout. There are plenty of recentNASA/ESA color pictures and drawings, and the binding will make the bookslast well into the next century. All of Kerrod's information is accurate, but sometimes slighly skewed; fpr example, he mentions the "Marscanals" mix-up with Schiaparelli and Lowell, but does not explain thatthe problem was translating "canali" to canals, not channels. But give Kerrod his due: it's not easy to distill so many scientificconcepts for young readers, and ultimately Kerrod does a good job coveringa broad range of astronomy topics, and includes just enough 'fun facts' tokeep young readers smiling while they learn. ... Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Asteroid," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Asteroid in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Asteroid when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Asteroid, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

Product Description
This is an up-to-date view of the solar system's minor bodies (comets, asteroids, meteors, trans-Neptunian objects and small satellites), stressing their interrelations, and relevance to accretion processes in the early solar system. The topics cover physical aspects, as well as dynamics, and observing programs related to these bodies. The volume also contains material related to current and planned space missions to minor bodies, in particular the successful Deep Impact mission to the comet Tempel 1. The book comprises 28 articles written by specialists in the field, who gave invited talks at the IAU S229 ACM meeting held in Búzios, Brazil, in August 2005. It will be of interest to researchers and graduate students working in planetary sciences and related fields. ... Read more
